It would be hard to find a more peaceful and idyllic setting than the one in which Undercastle Cottage is situated. The thatched cottage is found at the bottom of a wooded track in the heart of the beautiful New Forest and stands on the banks of the famous Hampshire Avon River. There is immediate access into the woods and open heathland and keen fisherman will be delighted with more than half a mile of private fishing - there is a rowing boat available upon request during the summer months. The river is famous for large Barbel and also Chub, Pike, Trout and Roach.
From the outside you see a traditional green oak timber framed house with a thatched roof and climbing roses – as you step inside, you will be awestruck by the amazing double height timber framed ceiling in the living room. All of the rooms have been carefully furnished with some delightful antique pieces of furniture.
With two detached out houses close to the main cottage providing additional sleeping accommodation (The Fishing Lodge and The Hayloft). This is truly a unique and desirable place to spend some time getting away from it all with family and friends. We had a great time at the cottage. The setting is really quiet and peaceful and the owner was lovely to communicate with when we needed her. We'd love to return in the summer.
It is hard to imagine a finer setting for such a beautiful cottage. We wanted somewhere to escape to for Christmas and unwind and this was the perfect destination. We would love to come back in the summer when we can sit on the terrace by the bank of the Avon river watching the swans glide by. Just perfect.
The cottage is beautiful & very comfortable. Great for walks around the New Forest or to just sit by the river & watch the wildlife. The most relaxing place we have ever stayed.
We stayed at the idyllic Undercastle Cottage last week and it was so relaxing and peaceful. The first sight to greet us in the village were the wild donkeys and the wildlife just got better and better throughout the week. We saw the otter family two out of the seven days floating on their backs and munching on crayfish for a good half hour. We also saw egrets, kingfishers, swans, herons, sparrowhawks, geese, ducks, moorhens, coots, cows, horses, mules, deer, cormorants, bats, hedgehogs. Great walking from the doorstep and the most fantastic pub in the world at the Bat and Ball just a 5 minute drive away, it was so good we visited 3 times! The area is beautiful but we were happy staying around the cottage for the week, sitting on the patio watching the most glorious sunsets, rowing up and down the river, fishing and just getting away from it all. Although there is no wi-fi (a good thing I think) there is a 4G signal outside to catch up on all important work if you need to. I thought I'd mention this as we nearly didn't book as being self employed we do need to keep on top of work. Phone signal is excellent too! If you only have one holiday, make sure it's here! Dog friendly too - we couldn't ask for more.
There are not enough superlatives to describe Undercastle Cottage. On first seeing it ,it takes your breath away. When my wife said we were staying in a New Forest cottage I visualised a woodcutter's hut. How wrong I was. The "cottage" is outstanding, a real chocolate box cover. Inside the photos do not do it justice. It is exceptionally well equipped - even down to a box of dominoes which provided much merriment on the patio table after a glass of wine. Watching the flash of Kingfisher wings, hearing the beat of the wings of four swans who daily flew past, the horses at the gated entrance were all wonderful daily reminders of how close we were experiencing nature.I taught my niece how to row in the boat provided and seeing the cottage from the river was breathtaking. As I don't normally cook at home it was a delight to use the barbecue to demonstrate my culinary talents and even Hugo our Labrador enjoyed my efforts as we sat on the patio. Further afield we visited HMS Victory in Portsmouth and the nearby shopping outlet is the best we have been in. The cottage on our arrival was well stocked and very clean . The garden is beautiful with a hammock and swing and our Labrador was in doggy heaven with the river nearby and an endless supply of sticks to retrieve. We had forgotten the simple pleasures in life until we re-attached at the cottage. Who needs WI-Fi ?
2 adults, 1 toddler & a little dog – Our family holiday was truly amazing at UnderCastle Cottage - the grounds are truly biscuit / chocolate / jigsaw box material in every way, you find yourself relaxing instantly due to the perfect calming surroundings. As a young family it can be very stressful with a 2-year-old toddler into everything but I can honestly say it’s been one of our best holidays yet! Mrs Kay was a great help with all the required information to ensure are stay was relaxing and stress free. Plenty of space, walks, wildlife & places to visit & at my daughter’s request Peppa Pig World which is 13 miles away! Great location, central to everything & the local shop in WoodGreen is a must, great local produce, very friendly people. Will be returning again very soon…to make more family memories.
