Overlooking the village green in this quintessential New Forest village, The Trusty Servant is a great place to stop for a bite to eat whilst exploring the area.  Family and dog friendly, with plenty of seating both inside by the fire or outside in the huge rear garden, you’ll find a good selection of pub favourites on the menu accompanied by a range of local beers at the pump.

Had a excellent meal here (good size portions), great service and dog friendly. Big outside area, great for when you have children and dogs with you!

August 2023

Lovely pub in lovely surroundings and the food was great too. Great service. We look forward to going back when we are next on holiday in the New Forest.

May 2023

Great food and service

July 2022

visited for lunch twice and on both occasions had a good pub meal. The menu is varied and different and includes a good range of vegetarian/vegan dishes. They have a large garden although we chose to eat inside as it was cool and the staff and visitors were adhering to wearing masks so we felt safe and our space was respected during our visit.

September 2021

This pub was absolutely amazing. The food for such a varied menu was delicious. We ate here a lot and also had takeaways as their whole menu can be prepared for take away.

September 2021

This pub was quite satisfactory as a pub but would advise that they are not at the present time giving New Forrest Cottage clients a discount. This is probably understandable due to the hard times that the hospitality industry has and is suffering

June 2021

We had an excellent meal here, really superb food. I was also impressed with how the staff were managing Covid procedures to keep everyone safe.

September 2020

We had a really nice meal here during our holiday, the menu offers a good choice & the portion sizes are generous. The pub is cozy & friendly and all the staff were really pleasant & helpful. Do check your bill though - a genuine mistake I’m sure but their calculations left a lot to be desired - quickly sorted though once we pointed it out.

November 2019

Very friendly pub with generous portions of very good food.

The New Forest Inn

A popular pub with New Forest folk for its great selection of local ales, beers, wines and delicious home-cooked food. The New Forest Inn’s location surrounded by forest and countryside means you’ll often see ponies, cattle, and pigs wandering past its doors. On nippy days, the Inn keeps its two real log fires burning. In the summer months, an enchanting beer gardens offers a beautiful spot to sit and relax. The menus and specials board feature old favourites, along with some tasty surprises. Dogs welcome.

The Swan Inn
(2 miles)

(2)

This family run pub has roots dating back to c.1731. There’s a large sunny beer garden to the rear, inside is the familiar warm and comfortable hues, dark wood, beams and exposed brickwork for a country pub of this age. There are daily specials alongside the main menu, which also changes on a regular basis. You’ll find the usual pub fare which is cooked well and in large hearty portions. Dogs welcome.

A real disappointment. When we arrived there was one other couple in the whole place...understandable that it was empty at 7pm on a Saturday evening as the food was terrible. The one member of staff was very friendly and professional. Such a shame.

A highly acclaimed country pub just outside Lyndhurst in the hamlet of Bank. Ponies often wander outside the pub which is popular with walkers, cyclists and those in search of good food and drinks in a charming location.  The food showcases the New Forest and coastal larder, with imaginative and creative menus that change seasonally.

Great little pub. We walked from Brockenhurst and had lunch outside. Both dishes we ordered were very tasty . On a Sunday you do need to book to get a roast lunch as the pub is very popular for a roast.

April 2024

Very expensive. 2 unremarkable sandwiches, 2 portions of chips and 2 soft drinks came to over £30.00.

May 2023

Lovely food staff helpful

April 2023

Typical New Forest pub. Adorable.

January 2023

Very nice pub

January 2023

Really lovely welcoming pub. Great food and service.

December 2022

Lovely pub with relaxing friendly atmosphere and good food.

November 2021

Lovely pub/restaurant in beautiful location, staff friendly and food great. Had a good evening here, think you need to book ahead. Well worth a visit.

October 2021

Cycled there through the forest for a light lunch . Not as good as we remembered it in November 2020. Our light bites were very small portions of very average food and not good value for money . But we saw enormous sandwiches taken to other tables , more than we would have wanted to eat, but maybe a better choice for folk who like a more substantial meal. Customer service good .

October 2021

Service was very friendly but the food was very poor and we couldn’t eat it.

August 2021

Great food, friendly staff, but the service was poor on each of the three occasions that we visited.

June 2021

October 2019

Very good food but too few vegetarian dishes Nice Pub, dogs are welcome

July 2019

Fabulous food, great hospitality

June 2019

Cosy, friendly and good food. What more does anyone want?

April 2019

Lovely cost pub

April 2019

Great food!

February 2019

We have eaten at the Oak Inn in Bank many times over the years and the standard of food is not what it used to be. I would have described the food previously as that of a gastro pub whereas now I would describe it as pub grub. The pub is still a great place to go for a meal. But I would prefer if they did not have sittings - the choice being 6-6.30 or 8-8.30

October 2018

Walked up from Brockenhurst and had a lovely lunch . ALL the staff were so friendly and welcoming.

January 2018

Great pub with lovely food and friendly service.

Holly, the host of Renoufs was very knowledgable and gave good recommendations both for wine and cheese. The meal was amazing, we had the Ultimate vegetarian platter for 2 which was enough for us 4 ladies. The ambience was relaxing, price reasonable and will definitely be revisiting. All in all, a great experience! Thanks Holly.

Visited ast week -was able to take the dog in too - lovely area, lovely staff - well worth a visit. Great example of social enterprise/Minstead Trust. Would visit again.

February 2024

We enjoyed Furzey gardens whilst staying at house for Christmas. The tinsel fairy tree trail was great , did it 3 times just to see if any fairies were at home. We liked the sculptures and quirky art amongst the garden. We will come again in may to see rhododendron in full bloom.

January 2024

Wonderful for all ages. The autumn colours were marvellous in the late October sunshine and the entertainment for young children was superb.

November 2023

Lovely Gardens and very nice (and tasty) cafe. Lots of tree houses and play areas for small children. Would love to go earlier in the year when everything is in bloom.

August 2023

We visit furzey garden whenever we can and it never disappoints. A wonderful and pleasant place to explore and to unwind and follow up with tea and coffee and a snack at the cafe.

May 2023

A truly amazing garden, supporting a brilliant charity

July 2022

We went there for an afternoon with the children and it was delightful. The children enjoyed the fairies and the adults enjoyed the beautiful gardens. One warning we thought we could take the dog but she wasn't allowed.

Lovely colorful gardens on a gentle slope with winding paths and pond. Cafe sells variety of cakes, including vegan ones and excellent cup of tea.

April 2022

Fabulous little gardens, doing brilliant work.

September 2020

I would recommend a visit to these beautiful gardens. A little gem.

September 2020

Furzey is a wonderful tranquil spot full of hidden corners & fairy doors to explore. Beautiful in the autumn & I would love to visit in other seasons too. New Forest Reptile Centre
(2 miles)

(5)

Close to Lyndhurst, the New Forest Reptile Centre is a small but intriguing attraction where you can see and learn about all of Britain's reptiles in one place.  Adders, grass snakes, smooth snakes, lizards, frogs and toads are all displayed in open air pens within a natural environment. See them enjoying the sunshine, go for a walk around the grounds and stop by for a picnic.  There’s even a marked cycle route, so bring your bike!

We wanted to visit this attraction but it was closed when we were there.

May 2023

This was a disappointment in every way apart from the ice cream van in the car park. There were a few outdoor enclosures, nearly all amphibians not reptiles who had no shade and were obviously hiding from the heat - the entire family scoured each enclosure for the creature on the sign and saw absolutely none.

August 2022

This attraction appears to have closed

July 2021

We spend a couple of hours at this centre including our picnic lunch and ice creams. Staff are very informative and helpful in spotting some of the more elusive reptiles. This is also accessible by bike - remember to bear left at the first fork along the track, as we missed it the first time around because the sign is positioned further round the bend.

August 2019

A fab little freeattraction with plenty of reptiles to see in pods (if you're patient and happy to look for them). We didn't see every single native reptile however we went on a very hot day and didn't want to stay out in the sun too long to look. There was also a large hut run by the RSPB under their 'date with nature' scheme which shows a goshawk nest. We went after the goshawks had fledged but there was still footage to see and displays about other wildlife in the area. The two staff on duty were very friendly and helpful and happy to share their knowledge.

Bolderwood Deer Sanctury
(2 miles)

The wooden viewing platform is just a short distance from the main Bolderwood car park. Adjacent to the car park is a large flat grassy Forest lawn, perfect for kicking a football around or a game of rounders. Bolderwood is one of the most popular spots in the New Forest for spending a sunny day and the area can become a bit congested during the better weather and at holiday times.

Brilliant walks, peaceful, quiet and relaxing. The deer here from the viewing platform looked happy too. Had a picnic at the tables in the sunshine and an ice cream from the van in the free car park. Great spot for a couple of hours out.

May 2023

A nice place to visit, you may be lucky enough to see the deer, if not it's nice place for a walk through the forest with picnic area

April 2023

Barton on Sea
(11 miles)

(2)

A stony beach with sandy areas as the tide goes out, and a great spot to do some fossil hunting. The cliffs are subject to considerable coastal erosion and at times parts of the beach can be cordoned off. The Beachcomber Café on the cliff top is one of the most popular cafés in the region. Plenty of parking in car parks along the cliff top as well as on-road parking.

A pleasant walk along the cliff top and along the beach. There was less cliff than last time we went to the New Forest.

Super walk, nice and easy and great place for a meal or tea and cake by the car park.

April 2019

Highcliffe Beach
Highcliffe Beach
(11 miles)

Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.

To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.

August 2023

Milford on Sea is a very quintessential English village which has retained all its charm. The seafront is a delight to stroll along and The Needles Eye Cafe produces lovely coffee and lunches which is well worth a visit. A walk around Sturt Pond is also enjoyable and through to the village.

June 2023

Lovely quiet location for a beach walk. Great for watching the sea and waves without the crowds.

June 2023

Brilliant beach.

September 2022

Beautiful beach with views to The Isle of Wight. Good for swimming, picnics and walking. Very good car parking and public toilets. Lots of good places to eat and drink either next to the beach or in the village, a short walk away

July 2022

A proper gem. Great location for the new forest. The village is great and was only a short walk from our house. Not too busy or full of holiday makers. We will be back.

October 2021

One of my favourite places

July 2021

Good place to go if you have a buggy or wheelchair as there is a tarmac path along the top of the cliffs with great views of the Needles, plenty of parking and a kiosk serving refreshments.

September 2020

Lovely village with adequate shops on a very pretty green.

September 2019

Due to my husband breaking his leg we hired a mobility scooter for our holiday. It was a joy to ride along the front at Milford. Wonderful views of The Needles and lots of benches along the way too. Great access from the car parks. Would be great if the short path from Milford to Keyhaven could be the same good surface. We felt the rough stones would be too hard to ride on.

June 2019

Love Milford on Sea so old fashioned hasn't changed much since I use go as a child in the 1960/70s

April 2019

great walking area, small cafe-the needles, children climbing play park- crashing waves over stoned beach

March 2019

Great for a dog walk along the spit to Hurst Castle. Needles Eye cafe is a welcome break, quite good food but very busy and a bit basic.

Avon Beach
(13 miles)

A family friendly beach close to Mudeford and Christchurch Harbour with plenty to do for all.  For those with disabilities or small children there is a beach level carpark, and to keep everyone safe there is a designated bathing area and a seperate area allocated for watersports, all overseen by lifeguards in the summer months.  This pretty sand and shingle beach is backed by trees and countryside and if you fancy some fresh local seafood or simply a coffee, ice cream or a cold drink, the beach is home to the excellent Noisy Lobster, serving breakfast, lunch and supper all year round.

Nice beach with good facilities

April 2023

Beautiful beach, lots of sand for youngsters- definitely been high on our favourites list, for more than 30 years and still is now the 'children' are nearly 30! - well worth the drive from New Forest. The Noisy Lobster is great and now has an 'outdoor upstairs' too. The Beach Cafe, half-way along, is excellent too- used to do very good carrot cake! The connecting beach towards Steamer Point is dog-friendly all year which is a bonus. Walking to the quay end, you can catch the ferry to Hengistbury Head which is beautiful beach too and often quieter (top favourite!) Even this last week (JULY 2021) the 'kids' wanted to crab-fish from Mudeford Quay!!

We loved our stay. We come back in september.

November 2022

Other than my other comments - our stay was absolutely magical and perfect. Thank you so much for letting us stay in your beautiful cottage, we had the best time ever. Best wishes and many thanks. Francesca

August 2022

A wonderful cottage. It was amazing to wake up every morning to stags in the garden. We had a great holiday and can’t wait to visit again soon.

July 2022

Yes we did. The location worked well and the access to the New Forest was so convenient.

May 2022

A lovely cottage with open aspect across fields. Ponies and donkeys were frequent visitors. Lovely walks into the forest from the doorstep with close encounters with deer and ponies. Friendly neighbours, farm shop and cream teas.

April 2022

Lovely cottage, good location as great to unload bikes from car and only short ride down lane to cycle route straight into New Forest. Great for bird watching from the cottage windows.

November 2021

The cottage's location is ideal with walks straight from the door so you don't always need to take the car to be able to explore. Being on a working farm was an added bonus, as was the farm's own shop just around the corner selling their own meat and home made goodies. Everyone was very friendly and helpful.

September 2021

Loved it - so peaceful and great to have Forest on your doorstep

July 2021

We had an exceptionally good time at Acres Down. It was wonderful.

May 2021

We have been renting holiday properties for many years, this one ranks as one of the best. Thank you so much!

May 2021

We loved acres down farm and would love to book for next year as soon as the bookings open on this property

May 2021

Our primary objective was to get away and do some great walking - achieved 100%. It's a cottage we've stayed at before and like; it is spacious, large enough and has all the comforts of home. Pleased to see some improvements (new conservatory, key safe) since staying there 2 years ago. We had deferred this holiday from May 2020. As we were still under covid measures, less availability/flexibility in local eateries and attractions could have caused a downer, but we resolved to go ahead anyway and do most of our own cooking.

October 2020

We had a great week with what looks like the last of the decent weather!

August 2020

Location perfect, shop & tea garden handy, animals past the front gate regularly, patio dining useful. 3 year old loved it.

October 2019

We had a very enjoyable week. A very peaceful location but also very handy for visits within the New Forest. Excellent venue.

October 2019

Overall an excellent stay. In general the cottage is well-appointed and offers a cosy feel.

This was our second stay at the cottage. We greatly enjoyed our stay and hope to return. We found the little Farm Shop very useful and the lady running it extremely pleasant and helpful. We had one meal out at the Pub in Emery Down, otherwise were self-catering.

Apart from the two items listed above, we were very happy with our stay.

Beautiful location, clean, well equipped cottage

May 2018

This was our first visit to this cottage and to this part of the New Forest. We were very impressed with the cottage, the helpful welcome we got from the locals - and the location with its immediate access to the Forest. We also found the nearby Acres Down Shop very useful. Unfortunately we chose to visit Lyndhurst on the Saturday morning. It took ages to get there because of the enormous traffic queue and the car park was brimfull. I hope I never make this mistake again ! We hope to have the opportunity to book the cottage again if it is available in the future.

we enjoyed it very much in the woods.lovely ladies in the farm shop(recommend the meat) and tea room (very nice cream tea) peaceful restful stay go cycling and walking in the forest have a pint in the local pubs .

The location is stunning and seeing cows outside the gate is just wonderful! The cottage is lovely, and the bedrooms a really good size, with excellent storage and lots of lamps make it really cosy. The kitchen is well stocked with equipment and a dishwasher! The cottage was lovely and clean on arrival. We would definitely stay here again, but for the fact that we like the novelty of staying in different cottages!

September 2017

The pictures showing the garden and surrounding fields are very misleading. Having a family that wanted to get out and enjoy the garden and surrounding fields, we weren't able to use the garden as we would have wanted to as the lawn was overgrown and the grass covered in apples, making it dangerous to walk on. Also the pictures don't show the fact that the fields have cows in them, again making it unable to use. It's a shame as the cottage was perfect otherwise in a great location.

We are sorry to hear that the garden was overgrown and we will be looking into this. The property is on a working farm , as described, which will explain why there were cows in the fields during your stay.

We enjoyed our stay. There were several places to sit and eat or relax. The diningroom and conservatory were welcome havens when some of us were watching the television. I would definitely recommend the cottage to others and hope to return with my daughter and grandchildren maybe next year. They would love it!

April 2017

Really enjoyed our stay at Acres farm. Wild ponies visited us most mornings. Peaceful and cosy. The farm house was perfect for our family of 5.

October 2016

This is a lovely old farm cottage, cosy and well equipped. Situated in a quiet spot on a working farm with wonderful walks just five minutes from the door and easy access to the rest of the New Forest.

August 2015
