Set in a quiet residential area, this attractive cottage offers fantastic holiday accommodation for up to four people.  Carefully extended, and refurbished the cottage exudes an ambiance of relaxation and welcome with comfortable living spaces, a cosy open fire for those out of season breaks, a sunny garden and ample parking.

From here you can easily walk to Burley village centre down the quite lane where you are likely to see the ponies and donkeys roaming free.  During the Autumn pannage season you may see pigs ambling past – hence the name of the cottage!  The village has several quirky shops many with a witch’s theme and a number of popular pubs and cafés. There are also two providers of beauty treatments in the village.

Burley is a great location if you are a keen cyclist with many routes starting from the village.  Bring your own or hire from Forest Leisure Cycling in the village centre.

Located in the heart of the New Forest National Park, Piglets is the perfect cottage to stay in if you want to take advantage of the many outdoor activities on offer including walking, horse riding (riding stables in the village), and cycling.  Just 20 minutes away you will find the sandy beaches of Highcliffe, Mudeford and Bournemouth with option to hire paddleboards, kayaks etc.

Please note that access to Piglets is via an unmade gravel track. Please drive carefully as there may be potholes.

Entrance via front door into hallway.
Door to lounge with feature open fireplace and Smart TV.
Through to open plan kitchen/dining room with part vaulted ceiling, integrated electric oven and hob, microwave, dishwasher, fridge/freezer, dining table with seating for six and underfloor heating in the kitchen.
Door to the rear garden from the kitchen.
Utility/cloakroom with washing machine, WC and hand basin.
Steep cottage stairs to first floor.
Bedroom 1 with king size (5ft) bed and built in wardrobe.
Bedroom 2 with twin (3ft) beds.
Bathroom with shower over bath, hand basin and WC.

The secure front garden offers off road parking several cars with a small seating area and bicycle storage. Please keep the gates shut to stop the ponies and donkeys entering the grounds of the property.

The pretty, fully enclosed, tiered, rear landscaped shingle garden offers peace and tranquillity to relax in and enjoy alfresco dining after a busy day exploring the New Forest or coast. Garden furniture for four and a barbeque platform are available for guests use.

Tucked in the lee of a leafy hill lies the charming village of Burley where cattle and ponies still roam freely under commoner’s rights.

Burley is full of endearing traits, from the cattle grid at the entrance to the local fire station (thought to be the only one in the country), to the secret smugglers’ cellar full of coins and pistols discovered beneath the bar at the 16th century Queen’s Head inn. Its history can be traced back to a prehistoric era and the Bronze Age burials mounds and Iron Age hillfort on the western fringe of the village. The name ‘Burley’ is of Saxon origin and means fortified place (burgh) and open meadow or clearing (leah).

Burley is renowned for its long association with witches, the most famous being Sybil Leek, a self-styled white witch who, during the 1950s, walked around the village in a long black cloak with her pet jackdaw on her shoulder. As a result, you’ll see plenty of witchy gifts and ornaments for sale in the village’s novelty shops, in fact, one of the shops has a portrait of Sybil Leek hanging up above the old Jacobean fireplace inside.

If you possess a penchant for popular folklore, Burley Beacon is bound to capture your imagination; the supposed lair of a once fearsome dragon that was slain by Sir Berkeley ‘The Valiant’ on Bolton’s Bench Hill after a battle that raged through the forest for thirty days and thirty nights.

There’s so much to see and do when you holiday in Burley. If you want to discover Hampshire’s great outdoors, you’ll find endless tracks and trails beneath the mighty oaks and giant redwoods of the New Forest. In the heart of Burley, you’ll find Forest Leisure Cycling where you can hire mountain bikes, comfort hybrids and electric bikes, plus family-friendly accessories such as child seats, trailers, tag-a-longs and tandems.

Wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy the New Forest Deer Safari at Burley Park where you’ll have the chance to learn all about these ancient forest dwellers and see them in their natural habitat. Enjoy the leisurely roll of a Burley Wagon as it takes you on a gentle tour in the dappled shade of Primrose hedgerows and Hoof-worn byways, a delightful way to discover this historic parish. If you’re looking for a truly mindful experience, then The Horse Raft offers you the unique opportunity to spend one-to-one time with horses while exploring and learning about their woodland home. The Burley Murder Mystery trail is definitely one for the super-sleuths as you endeavour to solve the riddles and clues found on the village’s prominent features and monuments. The trail reveals the village’s history of witchcraft and smuggling, while also introducing you to some of the New Forest’s most colourful characters, including legendry snake catcher and woodsman, Harry ‘Brusher’ Mills. Other popular excursions include the Beeches Brook Fishery, The Burley Food Trail, Brockenhurst Riding Stables and Burley Golf Club.

If you’re in the mood for something a little more sedate, why not take advantage of Burley’s wonderful hospitality, from cosy tearooms to pretty pub gardens, you’ll have no problem finding a quiet corner, a scenic view and a tempting menu. For the sweet-toothed among you, a visit to Burley Fudge Shop is a must, and for those keen to sample a drop of the local moonshine, a detour to the brewing house at New Forest Cider could easily help fill an afternoon.

The Queens Head - Burley
(Less than a mile)

(34)

If you’re looking for hearty portions of good, honest pub food at reasonable prices, the Queens Head fits the bill. Located in the centre of the village with plenty of parking, the pub is open for breakfasts and meals throughout the day – they also offer a good selection of dishes for vegetarians and vegans.  This characterful olde worlde pub is steeped in history and atmosphere with regular live music. There are roaring log fires in the winter months, providing a welcome retreat to warm up after a walk in the forest. Outside there’s plenty of seating for the warmer months. Average food

December 2023

We had two meals here and enjoyed them both. Great vegetarian and vegan options and a good choice of beers. In the centre of Burley and easy to park too.

September 2023

We booked for Sunday Dinner best to book as they get really busy. Food & service good

August 2023

Pleasant atmosphere, staff friendly, average food

May 2023

Very friendly staff but maybe a little under staffed on our visit. Seemed to have run out of some items on the menu and some of the beers on tap. Still what we had was good enough.

October 2022

Nice pub but unable to book successfully for a meal. It appears the chef decides how many people are allowed to eat rather than the manager. Tried to book and the manager said we could be accommodated only to be told that the ‘chef said no’. Didn’t bother going back after that! Clearly happier with empty seats than being busy!

August 2022

We would have loved to have eaten here but the website was rather misleading and that it said we could turn up without booking and eat in the beer garden. Unfortunately when we arrived, we were told that food was only being served inside and that all tables had to be booked. We got a lovely meal at the pub across the road instead.

August 2022

We were disappointed with the quality of the food - they also had a limited menu as some of the kitchen equipment was out of action. But the staff were friendly and attentive.

June 2022

What a super pub, the staff were amazing and helpful, the food I had which was a "special" was delicious (Peri peri chicken 2 ways!), unfortunately my partners beef and ale pie was all pastry (much tooooo thick)! Ale's and wine super, altogether a super evening. As I said staff were super and made our evening.

May 2022

Ate several times during our recent stay in Burley. Food and service excellent on each occasion. Lovely pub and beer garden

September 2018

Very nice pub. Good for kids. Great food

April 2018

This was poor - now a Chef and Brewer and not well run (and clearly some dishes just heatde up from frozen) . A very long wait as the owers had underestimated demand for half term lunch - did provide a free round of drinks when we complained though

February 2018

Food good, service appalling

October 2017

Food good but service still far too slow, even when not particularly busy - 30+ minutes (and no dog water bowls or biscuits evident!)

October 2017

A great pub. Food and service were excellent. Staff friendly and helpful. Mixed grill is superb.

October 2017

A lovely pub with good food

The White Buck
(2 miles)

(9)

A wonderful pub serving imaginative, well cooked food  wit a fast, friendly service. The pub has the décor and ambience of a large country lodge, compete with log fires through the winter months. Huge windows offer views out to a large and beautiful beer garden and terrace. Plenty of space for children to let off steam, and they’ll love the little woodland walk through the trees. Food at The White Buck is beautifully cooked, delicious and creative; and the bar stocks a good selection of beers, ales and wine.

Old Station Tea Rooms

The perfect stop when out for a walk or destination out in the forest for some scrumptious food and drink. Set on the old station line when steam trains used to ferry passengers between Sway and Burley, these tearooms have a new lease of life. Serving hearty portions of well cooked food and deliciously naughty cakes and cream teas. There’s plenty of seating inside and out on the patios.

Amazing experience!! We were a group of four adults and three young children looking for something to do on a rainy Sunday. We found the Deer Safari and thought it looked incredible... it did not disappoint. Our guide was so knowledgeable and put in so much effort even though no one else turned up for the safari. We got to hand feed the deer from the trailer and see one of the stags swimming across the lake! I cannot recommend this enough. Beautiful.

Highcliffe Beach
Highcliffe Beach
(7 miles)

Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.

To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.

Nice beach with good facilities

April 2023

Beautiful beach, lots of sand for youngsters- definitely been high on our favourites list, for more than 30 years and still is now the 'children' are nearly 30! - well worth the drive from New Forest. The Noisy Lobster is great and now has an 'outdoor upstairs' too. The Beach Cafe, half-way along, is excellent too- used to do very good carrot cake! The connecting beach towards Steamer Point is dog-friendly all year which is a bonus. Walking to the quay end, you can catch the ferry to Hengistbury Head which is beautiful beach too and often quieter (top favourite!) Even this last week (JULY 2021) the 'kids' wanted to crab-fish from Mudeford Quay!!

This is one of the most scenic of New Forest beaches. Lined with some of the most picturesque and expensive beach huts in the country! There’s no parking next to the beach, as it’s a traffic-free zone, but there’s pay and display parking at Hengistbury Head from where you can catch a little train to the sandbank, and Mudeford Quay which runs a small ferry (5 mins) over to the sandbank. Can also be reached on foot and by bicycle.

This is a holiday must. A short ferry out to amazing beach makes for a great day out.

September 2022

As usual, stunning. 4 ferries but sadly the Land train not running although according to their web site they were. Always visit when in the area

September 2020

Beautiful place, our favourite beach in south of England. It feels like an island, when you go over on the ferry and at times (off-season!) on sunny days it can feel like a little piece of Heaven, it's so peaceful and beautiful- bit of a sense of New England. There's a super little 'restaurant', the Beach Hut, which does great breakfasts, meals all day and some evenings. Also takeaway eg pizzas, you can eat on the beach. Very simple surroundings, with a sheltered veranda that can be uncovered in fine weather, and amazing views. Quite pricey and often very busy (and you are best to ring and check opening times and book since often weather and ferry-dependant) but the quality of the food and those stunning views make it more than worthwhile!

January 2024

I have arrived at Piglets and it is wonderful. The Christmas decorations are a super treat. Thank you very much for the kind gifts and dog treats.

January 2024

Great cottage.

November 2023

Piglets is in the top 5% of rentals we've stayed in. Your what 3 words was unhelpful though because it was in the lane, but not particularly close to Piglets. Shappen stores were great and their coffee shop too The local pub was rubbish. No heating, no warning about no heating and we'd bought drinks before we found it out for ourselves. No apology either, no fan heaters. I was shivering even with coat hat and scarf so we had to leave. The white buck was great! Piglets was lovely. Thank you.

November 2023

We had a lovely stay here at Piglets. Very comfortable and well equipped and clean too. It is not often that we would revisit a rental- but we would here!

October 2023

Second stay at this cottage. We appreciate the high standard which still allows us to bring our dogs.

October 2023

We have enjoyed a lovely week at Piglets. The cottage gave us all the ingredients we love. Even the weather was so much better than forecast. The proximity to the forest with miles of walking is wonderful. We loved to see the glossy coats of the ponies and the occasional flash of the fallow deer. We were adopted by three piglets who accompanied us on our walk one evening. The Beach at Highcliffe is stunning, we only found it towards the end of our week - one of so many lovely features to ensure our return. Many, many thanks.

September 2023

Yes really lovely cottage in a good location - will book again

August 2023

We've had the most wonderful stay in Piglets - all we could have wanted. Lovely cottage - comfortable and homely. Burley such a great village, Shappen Stores so useful - White Buck Inn is fabulous for food - Queens Head also good. Avon Beach and Highcliffe lovely facilities and we were blessed with great weather! Local walks across the forest from the cottage. Perfect - we'll be back!

June 2023

Fantastic accommodation with everything you could wish for including groceries to get you started. Loved Burley which is a fantastic central location for wooded walks (Blackwater Arboretum) beach walks (Highcliffe) crazy golf (Lymington and Health Walks round Burley. Still so much more to see so will definitely return to Piglets.

Had a wonderful week. Glorious weather. Loved seeing the ponies and foals. This cottage is just so nice and within a beautiful part of the New Forest. Enjoyed the motorcycle museum. Love The Three Tuns for food and friendliness (Bransgore). Just love Burley.

June 2023

We loved our week here at Piglets. A beautiful cottage with everything we needed in a lovely quiet location. We're regular visitors to the New Forest but tried Avon Heath Country Park (great walks and kids playground and cafe) and tried local inclosures Yew Tree Bottom and Smugglers Road (great views). Had a brilliant last day at Lepe Country Park, take sandy track from top carpark to take you to lovely beach/walks. Thank you for groceries.

May 2023

Wonderful location, well furnished with everything we could need.

April 2023

A well equipped, clean and well situated to be able to explore. We have had a fabulous week, walking in Blackwater Arboretum, along the coast around Highcliffe, Lymington, Lepe and Milford on Sea. Lovely long walk from the cottage around Burley including Wilverly Plain and Holmsley (love the wildlife)- We will return!

April 2023

We love coming to Burley and are so pleased to have found Piglets. Great location for village shops and pubs and a wonderful cottage. Our girls loved the wagon ride and the little witchy gift shops, very easy to walk for 5 mins and be in the woods exploring the New Forest. Dinner in the Queens Head was delicious. We will definitely be back!

January 2023

What a fantastic place to stay for Christmas. Stunning cottage and very comfortable. Thank you.

January 2023

We had a wonderful Christmas stay at Piglets. The property itself was beautifully presented, clean and very well equipped with possibly the most comfortable bed I have ever slept on! It really was the perfect retreat and we are so glad we chose to spend our Christmas there.

December 2022

Great quite spot, very good downstairs space, huge parking, would go again, other family members looking at Piglets for future.

One of the best cottages we have ever stayed in. More magical memories of the forest.

October 2022

Great cottage and location.

September 2022

Wonderful stay at 'Piglets' accommodation and the location was perfect. Had a better than expected stay in the New Forest and fully expect to be back to 'Piglets' in 2023. Exceeded all expectations.

September 2022

On the whole the cottage was very well appointed and nothing much to complain about apart from the above. We really enjoyed it.

September 2022

A delightful stay in a very well equipped cottage.

August 2022

Lovely thanks

July 2022

Such a beautiful cottage and location. Attention to detail and the finishing touches made it so homely. We have loved staying here, thank you! The Gun Inn at Keyhaven is fantastic for food.

June 2022

Lovely cottage - thanks for the welcome goodies. We found the Shappen Store was very impressive, great selection of cheese, good butcher and excellent sandwiches for days out. We very much liked Burley but were disappointed that the Queens Head were out of stock of various food on their menu and also ran out of Greene King IPA, they are a Greene King pub!

June 2022

In all respects an excellent cottage & garden with a handy local shop. Underfloor heating instructions were missing from the folder which need to be replaced. Without hesitation would stay here again if in the area.

June 2022

Lovely house and facilities. Great situation, we had a really enjoyable stay.

November 2021

We really did enjoy our stay, the location was fabulous, it was peaceful, well equipped and just perfect for our week in the New Forest.

November 2021

After many visits to the New Forest and particularly Burley, Piglets has become our favourite holiday home. It is comfortable, providing a home from home experience. Ideally located for us to do forest walks and visits to the coast. This time we have enjoyed meals at the Three Tuns, the Queens Head and The White Buck - all very good. We also visited Exbury Gardens and Highcliffe Castle for the first time and highly recommended. We are already looking forward to coming back.

November 2021

Thoroughly enjoyable stay in a very well appointed cottage. Lovely village, with good local shop around the corner. The Queen’s Head pub a short walk away did great meals. Nice to have the ponies wandering about too?. One of the best cottages we have stayed in (and there’ve been quite a few!).

November 2021

Piglets is a truly wonderful, hidden gem in Burley. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, our first holiday in two years, and we couldn't have asked for a more lovely home to stay in. Piglets has a lot of charm, feels homely, inviting and cosy and has been absolutely great for our one year old who has loved the open plan downstairs. The week was filled with laughter, sing-song and two very happy and well rested parents. We loved exploring the area and of course being able to drive down to the sea side! We look forward to coming back!

November 2021

Back for a second visit and not disappointed. We love this cottage, so relaxing and chilled. The cottage is beautiful and so cosy. Perfect and wonderful location. Again 10 out of 10.

November 2021

Many thanks for returning my charger, and my apologies for putting you to extra work. We enjoyed our holiday at Piglets, which we thought was beautifully furnished, well-equipped, and sparkling clean. The Dorset countryside and coastline were delightful, the activities and places visited entertaining and informative, and all the services smart and cheerful. Finally, the weather was outstandingly good as a bonus from the Lord

September 2021

We love the New Forest, have been here many times as we have family connections with Burley. The cottage is by far the best we have stayed in. The Rhinefield ornamental drive to deer sanctuary are worth a visit as is Hengistbury head- short ferry ride from Mudeford Quay.

September 2021

Added positive comments in visitors book

September 2021

Wow! What a lovely week at Piglets! Everything on the doorstep including ponies and cows! The forest is beautiful but the coast so close- what more could you want! Moors Valley is great for kids- recommend cycling the old railway routes. Loved Highcliffe beach. So much to see and do, we will return.

August 2021

Lovely cottage for a week’s holiday. Burley has a few nice pubs although it is definitely worth booking during the school holidays. It is also a good idea to book if you want to hire cycles from the shop in the village as there were none available on the day we tried to hire some.

August 2021

Thank you for a lovely stay. The cottage is very clean and comfortable and extremely well equipped. Great location for the New Forest and also visiting the beaches at Highcliffe and Mudeford.

August 2021

It was wonderful

August 2020

Yes, we thoroughly our stay at Piglets. We enjoyed location as it afforded trips to the beach as well as the New Forest on your doorstep. The village location suited us - nice to be walking distance from the village butcher/grocery shop. We loved the garden spaces at Piglets which were so lovely and private.

August 2020

What a lovely stay at Piglets! Our family of four thoroughly enjoyed our time in the sweet cottage and village, as well as in the gorgeous surrounding areas. We appreciated the gardens here at Piglets, the well equipped kitchen, comfy beds and relaxed atmosphere. Thank you for a wonderful visit; I'm sure there are repeat stays in the future.

July 2020

This was a gorgeous property that was beautifully presented and very comfortable. The front and back gardens were lovely and one of our party was so impressed by the quality of the bed covering and pillows she has ordered the same because she has trouble sleeping but not at Piglets

July 2020

Absolutely lovely furnished, with plenty of kitchen equipment. Very comfy bedding. My one concern would be the wood round the sink - hard to keep dry and worried it will stain quickly.
