The handsome village of Lyndhurst carries the lofty title of ‘capital of The New Forest’, a legacy bestowed by William the Conqueror who established it as a royal hunting ground in the 11th Century. This thriving parish is no stranger to nobility having been passed down to various kings, dukes and earls, all of them adding to its rich history of pomp and ceremony.

The most important building in this venerable village is the Queen’s House located at the top of the bustling high street, close to the impressive gothic church of St Michael and All Angels (where you’ll find the grave of Alice Hargreaves, the inspiration for one of Lewis Carroll’s most famous writings, Alice in Wonderland). The house is one of the Crown’s principle buildings and stands as the local headquarters of the Forestry Commission. It also contains the Verderers’ Hall, home of the ancient Verderers’ Court which dates back to the 13th Century, a place where important local matters were discussed, and disputes settled. If you’d like to learn more about the New Forest’s captivating history, then the New Forest Centre - located in the centre of the village - offers a fascinating insight into this ancient corner of England.

Lyndhurst’s thriving high street is lined with artisan outlets, traditional merchants, novelty shops, emporiums, delicatessens, cafés, tearooms and bistros, and if you’re a car enthusiast you’re bound to be impressed by the Ferrari and Maserati showroom at the bottom of the high street.

Such is the dulcet pace of Lyndhurst you’ll rarely feel the need to venture out of first gear, taking full advantage of the many quiet benches and daisy-dotted greens where you can while away the hours watching the world go by. One such spot is Bolton’s Bench, a yew-capped hillock on the eastern fringe of the village where New Forest ponies graze and you can enjoy gorgeous views past the church spire towards the heathland, wetland and distant trees, home to such species as the Dartford warbler, woodlark, silver-studded blue butterflies, fallow and roe deer, and a host of other woodland creatures. You’re also likely to hear the gentle nudge of leather on willow as the village cricket team look to up their runs before teatime.

When you holiday in Lyndhurst, you’ll find yourself encompassed by endless tracks, trails and circular pathways, the ideal setting for your walking and cycling adventures. Other popular local excursions include The New Forest Reptile Centre and the prestigious New Forest Golf Club. Whether it’s pony trekking or fly fishing, you’ll have no problem keeping the whole family occupied during your stay in Lyndhurst.

There are some lovely olde worlde pubs both in and around Lyndhurst, all with pretty beer gardens and gorgeous views of the surrounding New Forest. You’ll also find several exceptional restaurants tucked away along the village’s byways, perfect for a slap-up meal and a romantic night out.

During the summer months the New Forest open-top bus tour runs regular day trips along three different routes with connections to the charming neighbouring towns and villages.

Take a look at some of our delightful Lyndhurst holiday cottages and start planning your New Forest getaway.

The Fox & Hounds
(Less than a mile)

(8)

A friendly Georgian pub in Lyndhurst’s thriving high street. It’s often busy with both locals and visitors who come to drink, eat, take part in the quiz nights, events and listen to live bands on Saturday nights. Inside is spacious whilst staying cosy, especially with the log burner glowing on a winter’s day. During warmer months, you can sit outside in the large terraced beer garden.

We popped in for a drink. The service was great and there was a good atmosphere

April 2024

Holly, the host of Renoufs was very knowledgable and gave good recommendations both for wine and cheese. The meal was amazing, we had the Ultimate vegetarian platter for 2 which was enough for us 4 ladies. The ambience was relaxing, price reasonable and will definitely be revisiting. All in all, a great experience! Thanks Holly.

The Mailmans Arms
(Less than a mile)

(5)

At the end of the high street, Mailmans Arms is a great place for people watching – the pub is next to the Maserati/Ferrari garage! The bar stocks real ales and a nice selection of wines, spirits and beverages. Home-made food is served all day and beautifully presented. Meat is from a local butcher, and vegetables from a greengrocer on the high street. The menu features popular pub classics alongside a daily specials board. There’s a monthly curry night and very popular Sunday carvery. Indoors is a large log fire, and when warm, there’s a choice of outdoor seating to the front of the pub and a beer garden to the rear. A separate TV room shows major sporting events.

A very friendly pub in which we eat twice, enjoying the food both times.

May 2023

The Mailman's Arms is a great pub with friendly staff, delicious cooked food, reasonable prices and the best thing for us was being able to hire one of the pods in the beer garden - we will definitely be returning when next in the New Forest.

April 2022

Found the one way system in and out of the pub totally over the top and unnecessary

October 2021

In these COVID-19 times it’s not great when you receive a glass of wine with the previous persons lipstick visible on the glass.

This was a great pub, very friendly staff, great food and dog friendly too

This was a lovely place to visit with a two year old on a very cold day. As well as the displays that you'd expect there is a play, reading and colouring area for small children. The staff were really helpful, especially when Nanna was looking for baby changing facilities and needed help with the lift. Nanna and the two year old also enjoyed a snack in the cafe - again staff were very helpful and the food was tasty! There was also a nice selection of reasonably priced gifts. We're looking forward to visiting again.

Barton on Sea
(11 miles)

(2)

A stony beach with sandy areas as the tide goes out, and a great spot to do some fossil hunting. The cliffs are subject to considerable coastal erosion and at times parts of the beach can be cordoned off. The Beachcomber Café on the cliff top is one of the most popular cafés in the region. Plenty of parking in car parks along the cliff top as well as on-road parking.

A pleasant walk along the cliff top and along the beach. There was less cliff than last time we went to the New Forest.

Milford on Sea
(11 miles)

(16)

A beautiful shingle beach with pretty painted beach huts, plenty of parking, and excellent coastal walks along Hurst spit to Hurst Castle with clear views of the Isle of Wight and needles. The superb Raft Rocks Restaurant is worth a visit with its Art deco style and roof terrace. You can also walk across the wildlife marshes to Keyhaven harbour and (in season) take the boat to Hurst Castle or the Isle of Wight.

Lovely sea walk within 15 minutes of the cottage.

March 2024

A lovely place to stay. So much to see and do locally and within easy reach.

August 2023

Milford on Sea is a very quintessential English village which has retained all its charm. The seafront is a delight to stroll along and The Needles Eye Cafe produces lovely coffee and lunches which is well worth a visit. A walk around Sturt Pond is also enjoyable and through to the village.

June 2023

Lovely quiet location for a beach walk. Great for watching the sea and waves without the crowds.

June 2023

Brilliant beach.

September 2022

Beautiful beach with views to The Isle of Wight. Good for swimming, picnics and walking. Very good car parking and public toilets. Lots of good places to eat and drink either next to the beach or in the village, a short walk away

July 2022

A proper gem. Great location for the new forest. The village is great and was only a short walk from our house. Not too busy or full of holiday makers. We will be back.

October 2021

One of my favourite places

Good place to go if you have a buggy or wheelchair as there is a tarmac path along the top of the cliffs with great views of the Needles, plenty of parking and a kiosk serving refreshments.

September 2020

Lovely village with adequate shops on a very pretty green.

September 2019

Due to my husband breaking his leg we hired a mobility scooter for our holiday. It was a joy to ride along the front at Milford. Wonderful views of The Needles and lots of benches along the way too. Great access from the car parks. Would be great if the short path from Milford to Keyhaven could be the same good surface. We felt the rough stones would be too hard to ride on.

June 2019

Love Milford on Sea so old fashioned hasn't changed much since I use go as a child in the 1960/70s

April 2019

great walking area, small cafe-the needles, children climbing play park- crashing waves over stoned beach

Lovely village, plenty of shops and places to eat - no post office though.

Highcliffe Beach
Highcliffe Beach
(11 miles)

Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.

To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.

March 2024

Larger bath towels! Bath sheets instead of the smaller towel. Just something we all made the same comment on. But it is perfect we shall return again.

November 2023

We really enjoyed our stay in this excellent cottage, however when we arrived there was a lot of post in the porch, there was no heating on (last weekend in November) and none of the clocks had been changed. It was clean, but a bit chilly, and once we worked out how to put the heating on we just went out for dinner. Still, one of the bedrooms was quite cold the first night, which was a shame. Just felt like the place hadn't really been fully prepared for paying guests.

July 2021

Wow! What a fantastic holiday home Oxmead cottage is. We hope our first visit to Lyndhurst will not be our last. If we do return then I’m sure we could never find a cottage as convenient as this. The attention to detail, the location, everything is brilliant. We especially enjoyed the many walks from our doorstep without needing the car. We will also remember where we were when England at last won a semi final.

July 2021

Really lovely cottage right in the centre of Lyndhurst. Well furnished, comfortable beds, very sharp kitchen knives which we’ve found often missing! We loved our stay and will probably book again as so much to see and do in the NF and beyond.

July 2021

Yes we thoroughly enjoyed it

June 2021

Wonderful cottage, magnificent location. A little worried when we realised it was next to a pub but it was so quiet. We’ll definitely be back.
