A superb gastro country pub, with heaps of character in a stunning village setting. There’s a plentiful choice of drinks and a good selection of real ales. The Compass Inn has two bars and collection of dining rooms, each with a lovely atmosphere and candlelit in the evenings. Outside is a huge beer garden and playing field for the kids to run around. Food is absolutely delicious, making good use of local produce with excellent cooking. Dogs welcome.

Compasses Inn had friendly staff. Good food served quickly. A tad expensive for children’s menu.

August 2022

Long wait for our meal though pub wasn’t busy and food not very hot . Think whole fish should be changed to fillets .

July 2022

The Compasses has great potential, needs updating. It is currently not making the most of its location in the village had it been more comfortable it would have been my destination of choice during my stay in Damerham

August 2021

We had a lovely meal at the Compass on Saturday 10th July. The chips were slightly over cooked but otherwise all the food was good quality. There were dogs inside the pub which may be an issue for some.

July 2021

Would love to have tried this pub as we were within walking distance, but sadly the only Vegan/Vegetarian option was a salad ... not very inspiring for those in our party looking for options.

July 2021

Pleasant pub with fairly good food

October 2019

Plenty of choice and well prepared food at a reasonable price. Staff very friendly and our service was quick and efficient.

The Rose and Thistle
(2 miles)

(6)

In the pretty village of Rockborne, you’ll find the Rose and Thistle pub, which was once three thatched cottages, dating back to 1580. Inside it’s cosy and appealingly pretty with a large open fire. Outside there’s a beer garden with plenty of outdoor seating. The food here is all about being local and having provenance - game is a specialty. Once in the kitchen, ingredients are transformed in to delicious dishes in big portions. There’s a good selection of ales, wines and spirits served by friendly, efficient staff.

Did the 30 minute walk across the fields from the Chapel to this pub which is very quaint. Did not eat here, just had drinks but the pub and its garden is very nice.

Great pub. Dog and child friendly, we were made to feel very welcome. Had booked ahead and had a lovely table next to the big log fire. The food was fantastic. Even my fussy 6 year old ate pretty much all of his Mac and Cheese as it was just as he likes it and very yummy. Highly recommend the Steak and Kidney Pudding, delicious!

The Cartwheel Inn
(3 miles)

(7)

The food at The Cartwheel Inn is amazing, and people travel from afar to eat here. This popular, off the beaten track country pub, is a wonderful destination. You can sit outside in the large, sunny beer garden which has lots to keep the children entertained. And in the winter months, a log fire crackles away to keep you warm and cosy. Service is fast and friendly, and the pubs selection of drinks should be enough to keep everyone happy.

Take a step back in time to visit this Roman villa which was discovered in 1942 thanks to the remains of oyster shells and tiles.  Once excavated, the treasures kept coming with a mosaic floor and foundations making themselves apparent until the entire villa was uncovered, not to mention the remains of an Iron Age timber roundhouse as well.  Visit, explore, and see what you discover!

We think this is the best place to visit in the whole Dorset/New Forest area! We have been here three times over the years and it gets better every time. It strikes the perfect balance of being traditional, non-commercial and unique but also hugely entertaining and absolutely loads to do for young and old!

Nice beach with good facilities

April 2023

Beautiful beach, lots of sand for youngsters- definitely been high on our favourites list, for more than 30 years and still is now the 'children' are nearly 30! - well worth the drive from New Forest. The Noisy Lobster is great and now has an 'outdoor upstairs' too. The Beach Cafe, half-way along, is excellent too- used to do very good carrot cake! The connecting beach towards Steamer Point is dog-friendly all year which is a bonus. Walking to the quay end, you can catch the ferry to Hengistbury Head which is beautiful beach too and often quieter (top favourite!) Even this last week (JULY 2021) the 'kids' wanted to crab-fish from Mudeford Quay!!

Land Train runs along the promenade from Bournemouth Pier to Boscombe Pier, or to Alum Chine - perfect for children or anyone else who wants to save their legs whilst enjoying views of the beach.

December 2019

Our stay was perfect from start to finish.

October 2019

Very helpful and friendly owners

October 2019

Once again a lovely stay. It’s so nice to be in the heart of the New Forest and within easy distance of some great sights and eateries. Highly recommended are The Rose and Thistle in Rockbourne and The George in Fordingbridge. Lovely owners and so nice to be able to wake to nothing but birdsong, church bells and sheep!! Thank you

September 2019

Well equipped stunning barn conversion that is suitable for those with limited mobility due to 2 downstairs bedrooms, large bathroom with walkin shower, wide doors etc. Room for groups to have space with a mezzanine lounge area and first floor bedroom and ensuite. Owners very helpful.

September 2019

We had a fantastic time. We loved the house, it was so clean and modern. It was great that the children could feed the sheep in the field which is attached to the garden. The beds were comfy, the bathrooms were very clean and nicely done. We enjoyed sitting outside and had a relaxing time. I have already recommended it to a few friends and we would definitely go back

May 2019

A lovely cottage in a lovely part of the country. First class. Thank you.

February 2019

A spacious, well equipped, comfortable property in a lovely setting. The owners are generous people and obviously keen to make sure their guests are looked after. We appreciated being able to arrive earlier than the stated time because the property was vacant the week before. Well worth a return visit.

July 2018

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Oak Barn with my son and his young family. It is ideal for families with young children, especially with having animals on the farm. The owners were very friendly, and we would recommend Oak Barn to other family and friends.

April 2018

Really enjoyed our stay. Accommodation was first class, everything we needed was available, including comfortable outdoor furniture. We even had a horse, Olly, in the field and really enjoyed his company. Had a great holiday and hope to return in the future

October 2017

Beautifully built and equipped, really rather luxurious! The peace and quiet plus the various animals really added to our enjoyment.

October 2017

This is a fabulous newly finished property in a delightful rural location on the edge of the New Forest and is a peaceful retreat for those wanting to recharge their batteries. There is plenty of space here for 6 people and we found it to be warm and very comfortable; if you plan to self cater then there is ample fridge/freeze space, oven, microwave and dishwasher. There is also a washing machine and tumble dryer for your use in a purpose built laundry. We also used the wood burner in the evenings which adds to the cosy feeling you get here. The sheltered patio has table and chairs for six people; you may also get a visit from Ollie (the old horse) and his friend Nigel (the sheep) - Ollie seems partial to carrots! There is also good wifi on site but note, you may struggle for a mobile phone signal in this area - no EE service here until we got to Fordingbridge - we used the wifi for our communications. The owners are welcoming and very helpful; they are nearby and have the local knowledge to help enjoy your stay. We used the Coop in Fordingbridge for supplies; it's a good sized shop and useful for those bits you may have forgotten or run out of! The Compasses Inn is a 10-15 minute walk from the property and serves good food - it's worth booking a table as it gets very busy. This is a beautiful part of the country with plenty to do and see; there are lots of walks in the New Forest and we used the excellent OS Pathfinder 'Crimson Short Walks - The New Forest National Park' and OS Explorer map OL22 to get around. We had a wonderful time here and would happily recommend Oak Barn (and it's twin - Ash Barn) as a base for a New Forest holiday!

September 2017

We had an amazing time, thank you. It definitely needs reiterating in the literature that sat nav doesn't always work in this area, as we got a little lost! But the owners were absolutely lovely and so welcoming. The property itself is done to a really high spec and was a great place to relax and unwind. And having Ollie the horse as a regular visitor was always a treat! This was our first holiday through New Forest Cottages, but we'd definitely book again.

August 2017

Oak Barn was lovely, in a quiet and peaceful location. It was modern, clean and spacious enough for three generations of our family (Granny was able to retreat upstairs to her own living room when she'd had enough of the kids). The location is perfect for exploring the new forest and other areas surrounding it. We have a young family and it was lovely that the owners had thought about entertaining young children with books, colouring and games etc. Thank you for a lovely stay.

July 2017

It was a really pleasant stay. The property is spacious, clean, and in a wonderful and peaceful location. We love to travel so we have stayed in many lodges etc. This is one of the best cottages that we have stayed so far in country side.
