Set within the grounds of the owners’ home, Kingfisher Cottage is a tranquil adults’ retreat. Remote, yet easily accessible along a mile long private drive, the recently renovated semi-detached cottage is nestled within the Forest in a unique private location well over a mile from any road. Surrounded by nature, deer, ponies and cattle are daily visitors. Birdsong fills the air, fish swim in the large lily-filled lake and herons, ducks and of course kingfishers can be spotted. The bordering heathland is home to rare flowers and plants and the gardens of the main house are in comparison ornate, with Rhododendrons, Azaleas, many varieties of Daffodil and various specimen planting.

There is a choice of walks or cycle rides in every direction from the door, meandering along streams or on gravel tracks. Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary is within walking distance, where deer are fed daily, and Burley village can be reached on foot through the forest on an easy trail, with the option of a circular route along Sir Dudley’s Ride.

Burley is a traditional New Forest village, with a local store, gift shops, tea rooms, pubs and even a cider farm. Bikes can also be hired from the village at Forest Leisure Cycling. The market town of Ringwood is less than a 10 minute drive with many shops, pubs and a weekly Wednesday market, as well as a farmers’ market on the last Saturday of each month.  Further afield, the coast is within half an hour by car.

Kingfisher Cottage can be booked together with neighbouring Horseshoe Cottage to sleep 6 adults (property code A727).

The cottage is accessed along a mile long private tarmac drive but do look out for potholes!

Please note this property is adults only, strictly no children.

Entrance porch into kitchen/diner with table seating four people and door to outside paved terrace and garden.
Kitchen area with built-in electric oven and hob, larder fridge with ice box, washer/dryer. dishwasher and microwave.
Snug with sofas and Smart TV.
Bedroom 1 with double (4ft 6) bed, and wardrobe and drawer unit.
Bedroom 2 with twin (3ft) beds, wardrobe and drawer unit.
Bathroom with bath and shower over, basin, WC and heated towel rail.

The peaceful garden has a paved area with outdoor table and chairs for al fresco dining. The garden is mainly laid to lawn and overlooks a natural lake and forest beyond.

Tucked in the lee of a leafy hill lies the charming village of Burley where cattle and ponies still roam freely under commoner’s rights.

Burley is full of endearing traits, from the cattle grid at the entrance to the local fire station (thought to be the only one in the country), to the secret smugglers’ cellar full of coins and pistols discovered beneath the bar at the 16th century Queen’s Head inn. Its history can be traced back to a prehistoric era and the Bronze Age burials mounds and Iron Age hillfort on the western fringe of the village. The name ‘Burley’ is of Saxon origin and means fortified place (burgh) and open meadow or clearing (leah).

Burley is renowned for its long association with witches, the most famous being Sybil Leek, a self-styled white witch who, during the 1950s, walked around the village in a long black cloak with her pet jackdaw on her shoulder. As a result, you’ll see plenty of witchy gifts and ornaments for sale in the village’s novelty shops, in fact, one of the shops has a portrait of Sybil Leek hanging up above the old Jacobean fireplace inside.

If you possess a penchant for popular folklore, Burley Beacon is bound to capture your imagination; the supposed lair of a once fearsome dragon that was slain by Sir Berkeley ‘The Valiant’ on Bolton’s Bench Hill after a battle that raged through the forest for thirty days and thirty nights.

There’s so much to see and do when you holiday in Burley. If you want to discover Hampshire’s great outdoors, you’ll find endless tracks and trails beneath the mighty oaks and giant redwoods of the New Forest. In the heart of Burley, you’ll find Forest Leisure Cycling where you can hire mountain bikes, comfort hybrids and electric bikes, plus family-friendly accessories such as child seats, trailers, tag-a-longs and tandems.

Wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy the New Forest Deer Safari at Burley Park where you’ll have the chance to learn all about these ancient forest dwellers and see them in their natural habitat. Enjoy the leisurely roll of a Burley Wagon as it takes you on a gentle tour in the dappled shade of Primrose hedgerows and Hoof-worn byways, a delightful way to discover this historic parish. If you’re looking for a truly mindful experience, then The Horse Raft offers you the unique opportunity to spend one-to-one time with horses while exploring and learning about their woodland home. The Burley Murder Mystery trail is definitely one for the super-sleuths as you endeavour to solve the riddles and clues found on the village’s prominent features and monuments. The trail reveals the village’s history of witchcraft and smuggling, while also introducing you to some of the New Forest’s most colourful characters, including legendry snake catcher and woodsman, Harry ‘Brusher’ Mills. Other popular excursions include the Beeches Brook Fishery, The Burley Food Trail, Brockenhurst Riding Stables and Burley Golf Club.

If you’re in the mood for something a little more sedate, why not take advantage of Burley’s wonderful hospitality, from cosy tearooms to pretty pub gardens, you’ll have no problem finding a quiet corner, a scenic view and a tempting menu. For the sweet-toothed among you, a visit to Burley Fudge Shop is a must, and for those keen to sample a drop of the local moonshine, a detour to the brewing house at New Forest Cider could easily help fill an afternoon.

The Queens Head - Burley
(3 miles)

(34)

If you’re looking for hearty portions of good, honest pub food at reasonable prices, the Queens Head fits the bill. Located in the centre of the village with plenty of parking, the pub is open for breakfasts and meals throughout the day – they also offer a good selection of dishes for vegetarians and vegans.  This characterful olde worlde pub is steeped in history and atmosphere with regular live music. There are roaring log fires in the winter months, providing a welcome retreat to warm up after a walk in the forest. Outside there’s plenty of seating for the warmer months. If you’ve brought your dog on holiday, they’ll love this pub’s dedicated dog area with water bowls and doggie biscuits.

Average food

December 2023

We had two meals here and enjoyed them both. Great vegetarian and vegan options and a good choice of beers. In the centre of Burley and easy to park too.

September 2023

We booked for Sunday Dinner best to book as they get really busy. Food & service good

August 2023

Pleasant atmosphere, staff friendly, average food

May 2023

Very friendly staff but maybe a little under staffed on our visit. Seemed to have run out of some items on the menu and some of the beers on tap. Still what we had was good enough.

October 2022

Nice pub but unable to book successfully for a meal. It appears the chef decides how many people are allowed to eat rather than the manager. Tried to book and the manager said we could be accommodated only to be told that the ‘chef said no’. Didn’t bother going back after that! Clearly happier with empty seats than being busy!

August 2022

We would have loved to have eaten here but the website was rather misleading and that it said we could turn up without booking and eat in the beer garden. Unfortunately when we arrived, we were told that food was only being served inside and that all tables had to be booked. We got a lovely meal at the pub across the road instead.

August 2022

We were disappointed with the quality of the food - they also had a limited menu as some of the kitchen equipment was out of action. But the staff were friendly and attentive.

June 2022

What a super pub, the staff were amazing and helpful, the food I had which was a "special" was delicious (Peri peri chicken 2 ways!), unfortunately my partners beef and ale pie was all pastry (much tooooo thick)! Ale's and wine super, altogether a super evening. As I said staff were super and made our evening.

May 2022

Ate several times during our recent stay in Burley. Food and service excellent on each occasion. Lovely pub and beer garden

October 2019

A very friendly, welcoming pub. Nicely furnished, friendly staff. Food was nicely presented, of good quality at a great price. Special offers on certain days. Eg. Pie Wednesday's. Would highly recommend. Dogs welcome.

October 2019

When we stay in Burley this is always our first 'meal out'.

September 2019

Excellent meal, but out of some parts of our meals and did tell us when ordering, felt sorry for them seemed very short staffed but they done well. The property overall needs refurbishment

September 2018

Very nice pub. Good for kids. Great food

April 2018

This was poor - now a Chef and Brewer and not well run (and clearly some dishes just heatde up from frozen) . A very long wait as the owers had underestimated demand for half term lunch - did provide a free round of drinks when we complained though

February 2018

Food good, service appalling

October 2017

Food good but service still far too slow, even when not particularly busy - 30+ minutes (and no dog water bowls or biscuits evident!)

October 2017

A great pub. Food and service were excellent. Staff friendly and helpful. Mixed grill is superb.

October 2017

A lovely pub with good food

September 2017

Good food...nothing wow however service and staff could not have been nicer.

The White Buck
(3 miles)

(9)

A wonderful pub serving imaginative, well cooked food  wit a fast, friendly service. The pub has the décor and ambience of a large country lodge, compete with log fires through the winter months. Huge windows offer views out to a large and beautiful beer garden and terrace. Plenty of space for children to let off steam, and they’ll love the little woodland walk through the trees. Food at The White Buck is beautifully cooked, delicious and creative; and the bar stocks a good selection of beers, ales and wine.

Reasonable quality food, but small portions and pricey. The setting and ambiance is superb, but better to visit for a glass or two of wine rather than to eat.

March 2023

Friendly staff, dog friendly, good food at reasonable prices, all in all one the best eateries we tried.

October 2022

Good standard of food here. Lovely beer garden and good service.

July 2022

This was so good that we ate there 3 days in a row

October 2021

July 2021

The White Buck managed to squeeze us in as a late booking. Lovely setting. Food was good, service wasn't quite as attentive as we would have liked, but nothing we would complain about.

September 2020

Such a lovely place to have a drink in comfortable, grand surroundings. Staff very friendly.

The Red Shoot
(3 miles)

(2)

A popular country pub due to its lovely food, drinks and location. Riders like The Red Shoot to tie up their horses and stop off for lunch. Real ale fans are in for a treat as the pub has its own microbrewery onsite. Inside is roomy with a log fire burning when it’s chilly. During the warmer months, there’s outdoor seating to watch the world go by. Food is really good with a good selection of well executed pub classics, including pizzas and a separate gluten free menu. Dogs are very welcome with water bowls and doggie treats from the bar.

The food was excellent as usual. We have visited several times over the years and the standard has never dropped which is remarkable. The social distancing and arrangements were clear and easy to follow with staff around to help make sure we did.

Amazing experience!! We were a group of four adults and three young children looking for something to do on a rainy Sunday. We found the Deer Safari and thought it looked incredible... it did not disappoint. Our guide was so knowledgeable and put in so much effort even though no one else turned up for the safari. We got to hand feed the deer from the trailer and see one of the stags swimming across the lake! I cannot recommend this enough. Beautiful.

Highcliffe Beach
Highcliffe Beach
(9 miles)

Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.

To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.

A stony beach with sandy areas as the tide goes out, and a great spot to do some fossil hunting. The cliffs are subject to considerable coastal erosion and at times parts of the beach can be cordoned off. The Beachcomber Café on the cliff top is one of the most popular cafés in the region. Plenty of parking in car parks along the cliff top as well as on-road parking.

Nice beach with good facilities

April 2023

Beautiful beach, lots of sand for youngsters- definitely been high on our favourites list, for more than 30 years and still is now the 'children' are nearly 30! - well worth the drive from New Forest. The Noisy Lobster is great and now has an 'outdoor upstairs' too. The Beach Cafe, half-way along, is excellent too- used to do very good carrot cake! The connecting beach towards Steamer Point is dog-friendly all year which is a bonus. Walking to the quay end, you can catch the ferry to Hengistbury Head which is beautiful beach too and often quieter (top favourite!) Even this last week (JULY 2021) the 'kids' wanted to crab-fish from Mudeford Quay!!

Mudeford Sandbank

This is one of the most scenic of New Forest beaches. Lined with some of the most picturesque and expensive beach huts in the country! There’s no parking next to the beach, as it’s a traffic-free zone, but there’s pay and display parking at Hengistbury Head from where you can catch a little train to the sandbank, and Mudeford Quay which runs a small ferry (5 mins) over to the sandbank. Can also be reached on foot and by bicycle.

This is a holiday must. A short ferry out to amazing beach makes for a great day out.

September 2022

As usual, stunning. 4 ferries but sadly the Land train not running although according to their web site they were. Always visit when in the area

September 2020

Beautiful place, our favourite beach in south of England. It feels like an island, when you go over on the ferry and at times (off-season!) on sunny days it can feel like a little piece of Heaven, it's so peaceful and beautiful- bit of a sense of New England. There's a super little 'restaurant', the Beach Hut, which does great breakfasts, meals all day and some evenings. Also takeaway eg pizzas, you can eat on the beach. Very simple surroundings, with a sheltered veranda that can be uncovered in fine weather, and amazing views. Quite pricey and often very busy (and you are best to ring and check opening times and book since often weather and ferry-dependant) but the quality of the food and those stunning views make it more than worthwhile!

January 2024

We think this cottage, Kingfisher, and it's location has a magic! Everyday cares simply disappeared. We loved the peace and the many trees! The walks from the cottage and seeing foxes and ponies. The cottage is clean, warm and well-equipped with the comfiest beds. Endless hot water made baths a joy! Thank you so much for the thoughtful welcome treats. We enjoyed our chats with Ian and cuddles with the adorable Tiger. We aim to return!

January 2024

This was my second visit to Kingfisher Cottage. Planning on coming back for another. The area is perfect from walking out of the front door, straight out onto the heath and to visit anywhere in the forest. It is ideally positioned. Ian once again was a perfect host with all questions answered, plus it was lovely to give Tiger a stroke again.

January 2024

It has been a privilege to spend five days in this peaceful, clean, warm and welcoming cottage. A good place to escape the realities of everyday living - thank you .

January 2024

Cottage is stunning, warm, cozy and everything we needed. Stunning, soothing fabulous walks. Local area is well worth exploring. As is just relaxing. Going at our own pace away from the rat race. We will come back in Spring, Thank you.

September 2023

A gem of a place. Redstarts in the garden. Another gem is Burley Parish Church built in 1839 of local brick; a simple structure but so lovely inside. Thank you Tiger and Ian.

September 2023

Very enjoyable stay. Ian the owner was very friendly, but respectful of privacy. Good location for walking and cycling from the cottage. Very peaceful garden, deer were reliable evening visitors. Cottage was comfortable and spacious.

September 2023

Thanks for a really relaxing stay - the cottage is perfectly located for walks or cycle rides into the Forest with amazing sunset views. We loved being surrounded by nature, being able to sit outside and watch the deer, listening to the birdsong. We only wish we could only stay longer!

September 2023

Wonderful, peaceful stay. Loved the location in the forest, nearby walks and the local wildlife. The cottage itself is vey clean, nicely decorated and has quality kitchen equipment and furnishings. Friendly, welcoming owner. Would return dependant on time of year and competitive price.

September 2023

Thank you for a lovely stay, we have enjoyed the peacefulness of the cottage location and the surrounding forest. We loved watching the deer in the grounds, and there being no one else around. Visited around the forest and to the coast. The location is perfect for both. Hoping to return again to this wonderful area and the comfort of the cottage.

July 2023

We can't thank you enough for a most peaceful, beautiful holiday. The cottages tranquil setting away from everything was just what we needed! We took walks, drove into Burley village (lovely), and made my son's day at the Beaulieu Motor Museum. Not only is the cottage situated within easy driving distance from all the towns and sights, it is also very clean, well equipped and spacious with a lovely porch where we spent our evenings before dinner planning where we were going the next day. We will definitely be recommending! And finally, thanks so much for your thoughtful gifts - they were very much appreciated!

June 2023

What a great time we had here! All the green woods and fields around us, the silence and the wonderful equipped cottage, was the recipe to a wonderful holiday. We have watched how the Moorhens raised their chicks in the lake and how they, one by one flew out. It was beautiful to see the shy faces of the Roes in the evening, before they run away gracefully. Thanks so much Ian for your help with the fridge and car problems. We hope you and your good family will live in good health in this beautiful place.

June 2023

Our second time at Kingfisher and once again we had very good weather- perhaps a tad too hot! What a peaceful place this is to stay – shame it is such a long drive from home. Nice to have a pair of grey wags in the garden and the occasional red start. No spotted flys this year though.

June 2023

Thank you Ian for all the information and knowledge of the area. You made our stay in Kingfisher fully enjoyable. Seeing the roe deer in the garden while having breakfast was a pleasure and appreciate how secluded this cottage is. Plus it was nice to meet lovely Tiger as well. Looking forward to returning later in the year. Thank you.

May 2023

We very much enjoyed our stay here. It is so quiet, and we enjoyed watching the deer. So lovely for trips to the forest and to the coast. Particularly liked the White Buck for a meal out, but found lots of others as well.

May 2023

Thank you Ian, for a warm and friendly welcome. Kingfisher Cottage provided a peaceful escape in the woods and an excellent base for exploring the New Forest. We have been charmed by the rolling countryside and magnificent trees but sorry to see that the understorey of new growth and springs flowers has been grazed away.... there is much to see.... but much more nature that is missing. We very much enjoyed our stay here.

April 2023

Wonderful location, for a cosy cottage. We had a great time cycling the trails of the New Forest on our door step.

April 2023

Dear Susan, Ian and Samuel and Tiger, thankyou for our week long ‘home from home’. I have never known quiet like it, I thought it was impossible to achieve these days. Don’t want to leave, please can we stay? We have discovered a new lease to our eighty years, you are never too old to learn. Beautiful cottage, so well equipped. Thank you so much.

March 2023

We have had a wonderful, peaceful week here. We have loved seeing the deer in the garden every day and have enjoyed long walks from here (including to the Red Shoot in Linwood and the Old Station at Holmsley tea rooms) We have had excellent meals at the New Forest Inn in Emery Down, and The Trusty Servant in Minstead, as well as an excellent Ploughman's lunch at the Royal Oak Fritham. This is an extremely special location and we hope to return one day. Many thanks to Ian and family.

March 2023

Thanks for a lovely stay at Kingfisher Cottage- so peaceful. Thanks to Ian for the local history and his faithful friend the dog. Weather was good so took the bikes out in the forest most days. Good base for seeing friends, good day out in Beaulieu, also a visit to Bucklers Hard. Good Sunday lunch at the Fish Inn Ringwood. Popped into Shappen Cafe in Burley for lunch one day.

November 2022

We had a wonderful time at Kingfisher Cottage. Loved seeing the Deer most days in the grounds. We would recommend Beaulieu for a good day out, going up towards Fordingbridge to see the donkeys (near Hockeys Farmshop). We ate at the New Forest Inn near Lyndhurst and would highly recommend for great food and welcome. The cottage itself was lovely and comfy, really cosy - we didn't want to leave. We are already planning our next trip to the New Forest! Thank you Ian for a great week at your place and the warm welcome.

October 2022

We have had a lovely week here. The cottage is cosy and full of character. Fantastic location. Enjoyed the walks through the woods to Burley. Wonderful food at The White Buck and The Burley Inn and tea shops. We have seen deer in the front garden most days and heard a tawney owl one night whilst watching the stars. Such a unique location! We didn’t want to leave. Thank you.

October 2022

Excellent accommodation friendly and helpful owner Ian. Definitely would book again.

Down for my Niece's wedding and a visit to Emma's childhood haunts in the New Forest. A wonderful week. Thank you for such a peaceful, comfortable 'base camp'.

September 2022

Fantastic location. Had a great time . Wish we had 2 weeks there

September 2022

Fantastic week of cycling in the Forest, the coast and around Bucklers Hard. Good day at the Bournemouth Air Show another good day at Beaulieu Motor Museum. Best meal out was at The Three Tuns in Bransgore. Amazingly we dodged the rain every single day! Could have done with another week.

August 2022

What a wonderful location – so peaceful yet close enough to local attractions. We have had a relaxing (albeit energetic) week at Kingfisher Cottage, which is provided by helpful yet unobtrusive hosts. Thank you so much!

August 2022

We especially appreciated the cool of the garden during the heatwave. Lovely. Also very much appreciated the large scale local map.

August 2022

The location was lovely and the owners were so very kind and friendly.

July 2022

Great location for peace and quiet and long walks. The cottage is delightful and I wish I could bottle the view from the patio and take it back to Canada. It was extra special seeing all the wildlife and a privilege to see and hear the Nightjars. Adding to the list the one legged Blackbird and rather tatty Robin eating apples from the tree!! Thank you for a wonderful respite.

July 2022

This is a wonderfully situated cottage and perhaps the first cottage ever we would wish to return to.

July 2022

Kingfisher Cottage and Old House are a wonderful discovery buried deep in the one of the least spoilt parts of the Forest, just as it should be these days. It is also handy for Burley with two excellent pubs (The White Buck is worth finding) and a lovely village store. The wildlife has been spectacular. Thank you Ian and the family for lovely welcome and interesting information, oh and the Nightjar.

July 2022

We've thoroughly enjoyed our stay thanks to the nice cottage, the privacy, the beautiful environment and most of all the enjoyable talks with the owners. We were able to see night jars and a range of other birds thanks to their guidance. Thanks !

July 2022

Our stay at Kingfisher Cottage has been very enjoyable. The accommodation is spacious enough for two couples and most comfortably furnished. It is light and airy, with restful forest views all around. We have visited many interesting villages and fascinating tourist attractions in the area including Beaulieu Motor Museum, Bucklers Hard and Boscombe, as well as taking picturesque walks more locally through the Forest. A wonderful holiday home from home in the New Forest. Many thanks to Ian and Susan.

November 2021

we wonderful stay the owners were amazingly helpful and very friendly and accessible

October 2021

We loved this property, off the beaten track (literally) away from crowds, step out of the front door into the forest. Beautifully presented, warm and comfortable. We will consider returning

October 2021

We had a really lovely stay at Kingfisher Cottage. It's cosy, very well equipped and the beds were very comfortable. We loved the information cards detailing the history of the house and explaining the quirky features of the cottage. The location is fantastic, so quiet and peaceful and there is direct access to the forest where there are plenty of walking and cycle tracks. It was lovely to see deer in the garden and in the forest just beyond. The New Forest is a fantastic area and you don’t have to go far to find something to see or do. Thanks to the lovely family owners who were helpful and interesting to talk to.

October 2021

Very much so.

September 2021

The owner was charming and very helpful

September 2021

We enjoyed our stay at Kingfisher cottage very much, the cottage had everything we could need. Beautiful inside, and such a great location to go off on some great local walks from. We hired bikes from place in local village, and on other days easy drives to coast and ferry around. Thankyou!

August 2021

Thank you for your generous hosting during our stay at Kingfisher and Horseshoe. We very much appreciated the attention to detail and the high standard of equipment available that made our stay comfortable and very pleasant. We loved the area, particularly the chance to be close to the wildlife. Thanks once again for a memorable and enjoyable stay.

August 2021

Fantastic holiday with hosts who were friendly and helpful

July 2021

As new visitors to the New Forest, this beautiful cottage exceeded all our expectations. The location was so quiet and relaxing and perfect for walks in the forest or on the open heathland. The cottage was fully equipped to cook and enjoy eating in or alfresco on the patio.

June 2021

We really enjoyed our time in the lovely Kingfisher cottage. Such a scenic and tranquil place to spend 10 days! Loved the fact that the kitchen was fully equipped, making it easy to enjoy a nice home cooked meal. It was such a dream staying at your lovely cottage.
