On the shingle shores of Poole Bay lies the characterful village of Milford on Sea.

With its brightly-coloured beach huts and strolling promenade, this coastal parish is every bit the traditional seaside holiday destination. On a clear day, you’ll be able to gaze all the way to the chalky sea stacks known as the Needles which stand off the Isle of Wight, and under a blanket of twinkling stars on a dark night you’ll see the distant harbour lights of Christchurch, Poole and Bournemouth.

The best thing about Milford on Sea is the ease at which you can swap the fresh sea air of the Solent for the leafy woodland glades of the majestic New Forest, making it the ideal base from which to explore the many wending ways of Hampshire.

One of Milford on Sea’s most popular local walks takes in a sweeping stretch along Hurst Spit between the saltmarshes and mudflats and the sparkling bay waters. The path leads you all the way to the medieval ramparts of Hurst Castle and the brilliant white cylindrical walls of Hurst Point Lighthouse, which was built in the 1860s.

You’ll have no problem keeping the whole family occupied during your holiday in Milford on Sea with action and adventure to be had on both land and water; from pony trekking and mountain biking to stand up paddle boarding and sailing, be prepared for some fun-filled excursions.

If you’d rather while away the hours and stay busy doing nothing, there are plenty of quiet benches and sun-dappled greens where you can sit and watch the world go by with an ice cream or some fish ‘n’ chips. There is a gentle pace to this charming coastal village, the kind that invites you for a leisurely paddle along the seashore, or perhaps you’d like to chance your arm with the local crustaceans and dangle a crab line off Sturt Pond Bridge followed by a mooch around the pretty high street with its quirky artisan shops, tempting delicatessens, inviting cafés and cosy tearooms.

Milford on Sea is renowned for its hospitality and boasts an array of lovely pubs and sumptuous restaurants, perfect for a lazy lunch or a slap-up evening meal accompanied by a stunning sea view. The village also runs a busy social calendar, the highlights of which include the annual May Day festival, a music and arts showcase, a summer carnival, and an ever-popular seafood week.

Whether you’re looking to relax and unwind or roam and explore, you’ll find the best of both worlds when you holiday at Milford on Sea. Have a look at our growing list of Milford on Sea holiday cottages and start planning your seaside escape.

Beach House - Milford on Sea
(Less than a mile)

(18)

An excellent pub serving local draft ales and good quality food, in a fantastic art deco building, which still retains the original features such as stained-glass windows and oak panelling. In addition, there are great sea views and a lovely child-friendly garden that backs onto the clifftop and leads onto the beach. The menu is varied and service is friendly with nice touches such a bowl of apples that you can help yourself to.

We were disappointed that it is no longer open.

June 2023

as guests of Apple court house the gardens were available for us to browse- however, one day we found out someone had opened the gats and entered the gardens for themselves arguing that they had driven from Devon. Wrong time of year to get the advantage of the beauty but could visualise the attraction

August 2023

Milford on Sea is a very quintessential English village which has retained all its charm. The seafront is a delight to stroll along and The Needles Eye Cafe produces lovely coffee and lunches which is well worth a visit. A walk around Sturt Pond is also enjoyable and through to the village.

September 2020

Lovely village with adequate shops on a very pretty green.

September 2019

Due to my husband breaking his leg we hired a mobility scooter for our holiday. It was a joy to ride along the front at Milford. Wonderful views of The Needles and lots of benches along the way too. Great access from the car parks. Would be great if the short path from Milford to Keyhaven could be the same good surface. We felt the rough stones would be too hard to ride on.

April 2019

great walking area, small cafe-the needles, children climbing play park- crashing waves over stoned beach

Barton on Sea
(3 miles)

(2)

A stony beach with sandy areas as the tide goes out, and a great spot to do some fossil hunting. The cliffs are subject to considerable coastal erosion and at times parts of the beach can be cordoned off. The Beachcomber Café on the cliff top is one of the most popular cafés in the region. Plenty of parking in car parks along the cliff top as well as on-road parking.

Highcliffe Beach
Highcliffe Beach
(5 miles)

Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.

To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.

Nice beach with good facilities

April 2023

Beautiful beach, lots of sand for youngsters- definitely been high on our favourites list, for more than 30 years and still is now the 'children' are nearly 30! - well worth the drive from New Forest. The Noisy Lobster is great and now has an 'outdoor upstairs' too. The Beach Cafe, half-way along, is excellent too- used to do very good carrot cake! The connecting beach towards Steamer Point is dog-friendly all year which is a bonus. Walking to the quay end, you can catch the ferry to Hengistbury Head which is beautiful beach too and often quieter (top favourite!) Even this last week (JULY 2021) the 'kids' wanted to crab-fish from Mudeford Quay!!

April 2024

Beautiful house with all amenities. Excellently well maintained and the housekeepers were an exceptional. We will come back!

March 2024

We had a lovely stay at Colombia House. In March we weren't expecting brilliant weather, but did enjoying sitting out on the terrace in the sunshine one day. Hope to return when the weather is good enough to make use of the awning. We were particularly impressed by how well organized everything was, especially the kitchen cupboards. The welcome treats that the owner had left us were much appreciated and we are now addicted to Tyrrell's cheese and chive crisps!

July 2023

Our second stay at Columbia House with our family group - and a second grandchild with us this year! The accommodation was again exceptionally clean and extremely well presented. Not quite as sunny as last year but we had a fabulous time. A special thank you from our 3-year-old who loved the toys and books.

June 2023

We thoroughly enjoyed our second stay at Columbia House. It is very well furnished and equipped throughout which makes it very comfortable and a pleasure to stay in. We will be returning!

May 2023

Definitely cleanest and one of the best properties we have stayed in to date

May 2023

The cleanliness of this property was exceptional, thank you so much to the team responsible.

May 2023

Wonderful property, beautiful position and spotlessly clean. So well provisioned with soaps and towels and equipment. Beds very comfortable. We were lucky with the weather. Had a great week, could happily have stayed another week! Recommend Columbia house to anyone, without hesitation.

January 2023

What a fabulous house to spend Christmas with our family. So warm and cosy yet giving us all plenty of space. Everything here is perfect, wonderfully comfortable beds, showers in the bathrooms that work so well and a kitchen that has everything we needed. I would go on! We enjoyed visiting the village with its great selection of shops , pubs and cafes and have walked (some of us) to Hurst Castle and also towards Barton on Sea in the other direction. Would recommend the Britannia Thai (eat in and takeaway) we did both. Saltwater cafe is excellent. The lazy lion and Smugglers Inn are very nice. The Hollands mini supermarket has most things and parking in the village is easy (winter time). The Beach House is also good. All in all a great week, we've had an amazing time.

October 2022

Beautiful views, superbly equipped, clean and light

September 2022

A wonderful week at Columbia House has been had by all of us. It had the 'Wow' factor as soon as we walked through the door! Spotlessly clean, well done to Amanda. The view is stunning and its been lovely to wake up to every morning. Sadly, time to go home.

September 2022

We have had a wonderful week in this beautiful house, stunning views of the Needles and lovely coastline. The weather has been very kind to us and had some lovely days out to nice places Mudeford, Christchurch and Lymington - would also recommend the hop on hop off bus that can be caught outside the Beach House (opposite) and go round the New Forest on 3 different routes. Milford on Sea has a nice vibe to it and had nice meals at the Beach House, Lazy Lion and The Lighthouse.

August 2022

Wow, wow, wow, just about sums up Columbia House. The photos don’t do it justice. My family and my brother’s had the best week with our 4 daughters. The house was spotlessly clean and tidy. The views were stunning across to the Isle of Wight. There was so much space if needed. Everything about this house was truly wonderful.

August 2022

We have had the most enjoyable two weeks in Columbia House. The weather has been amazing and as previous guests have commented you never tire of the wonderful views! The house was beautifully presented upon our arrival which is a credit to the team managing the property. The attention to detail is high and is one of the best we have experienced. Our daughter and 3 year old granddaughter joined us for five days and loved the top floor - the bunk bed room and toys made it all the more special. This is a most beautiful part of the country and we will return to Columbia House again.

August 2022

A super week at Columbia House. We loved the property and fantastic views, beautifully decorated and incredibly well equipped our two boys (4 & 2) particularly enjoyed the selection of games and puzzles in the snuggly room. We have enjoyed exploring the local area and would recommend "Paddle on the Green" for coffee and cake and "The Gun" in Keyhaven for its fantastic menu and high quality food (and lovely flower filled garden). Also The Crown at Everton for a crab salad. We hope to return very soon.

August 2022

Well, what a fantastic facility on so many levels. The house was really clean and tidy when we arrived and we were really impressed on first impressions! These developed and made this entire week a lovely experience. The decor and supporting equipment made the house super functional and comfy. We loved the little touches - local OS Maps, guides, games etc. Of course the location helped enormously - we could play golf - two different but nicely challenging courses within 15 minutes, great mountain bike riding , walks and some vert enjoyable food service restaurants. You should feel very proud of your cottage and how we are looked after by your team. Fantastic, hope to be back again at some point.

August 2022

We have enjoyed our holiday at Columbia House . The view was amazing. We flew our great white shark kite on Whitefield Moor - this was great fun. On the last day we saw red, white and blue sailing boats. Thank you.

July 2022

Columbia House is the best presented, best equipped and cleanest holiday let we have ever used and we have used many over the past 30 years. The extra touches, particularly in the child’s room, were lovely. Our 2 year old grandson was immediately happy in there in his travel cot and is was great that Mummy could be just opposite with added assurance from the stair gate. Plus fabulous view, great beaches and amazing weather (realise you cannot guarantee the latter)!

April 2022

This was our second visit to Columbia House. I must say the cleanliness of the house is first class. It's been a joy staying here for our daughters 40th. Even though some of our party couldn't join us due to covid, we've had a wonderful time. Great views, wonderful location and amazing property. Looking forward to returning.

April 2022

What an amazing house! We love it and wish that we could stay for much longer. We have had a wonderful time in the village where I grew and have since moved away from. It has been lovely to spend time with my parents who live locally and to also have fun with my children. We enjoyed catching the Mudeford Ferry over to the beautiful soft sand by the beach huts, a day at Beaulieu, another Ferry from Keyhaven to Hurst Castle, and a lot of time playing on Milford beach. The Beach House (or Westover Hall as it used to be called) was great for simple food and a break from cooking. I hope that we might be able to come back one day.

March 2022

We had such a wonderful stay. A fantastic location with great views and an extremely well thought out house. We couldn't have asked for a better stay here at Milford on Sea.

We have had a fabulous holiday and have enjoyed all the comforts of your stylishly designed holiday home. Milford on Sea is the perfect location to explore the Hampshire coast (by bike) and New Forest area. Thank you for sharing your home for others to enjoy. Also thank you to the cleaner who has left the house immaculately clean and tidy for the guests to enjoy on arrival. Very much appreciated.

We have loved our stay at Columbia House. What a beautiful property with every comfort you could wish for. (Credit to the people who service your property). We enjoyed walking, out to eat in the evening and would thoroughly recommend 'The Lazy Lion', food wonderful. Day trip to the Isle of Wight was great. Such lovely weather . Spyglass Inn at Ventnor lovely for lunch, fab views. All in all a great few days in the area. Very fortunate with the weather.
