On the western banks of the Lymington River, having wended its way through the sun-dappled glades of the New Forest to find the Solent, lies the beautiful Georgian market town of Lymington.

Lymington has been an illustrious seaport for centuries and was once well-known for its shipbuilding and salt harvesting enterprises. Today, its three sparkling marinas offer berths to the many residents and visiting yachts seen docked in its harbour, tell-tale signs of the town’s vibrant sailing community. In fact, it was the gleaming Solent waters that were the training ground for local hero and five-time Olympian Sir Ben Ainslie; a letter box painted gold in celebration of his achievements can be found at the bottom of the town’s bustling high street.

Lymington’s ancient origins can be traced back to the dyke and mounds that once formed the outer defences of its Iron Age fort, known locally as Buckland Rings. When the Jutes prevailed from the Isle of Wight in the 6th century they founded a settlement called Limentun, and by the time of the Norman conquests this once sparsely populated enclave had grown into a flourishing port.

Today, the characterful, cobbled streets of Lymington are lined with artisan shops, galleries and boutiques, whilst the town’s weekly market is filled with stalls selling everything from garden plants to home-baked cakes. Lymington also plays host to a fleet of elegant restaurants, cosy tea rooms, charming cafés and stylish bistros. Lanes of Lymington, with its sleek balconies and intimate alcoves, has all the pizazz of a top London outlet, while the award-winning Elderflower on Quay Street boasts one of the finest a la carte menus in the region.

Holidays in Lymington can be easily filled with a variety of family-friendly activities, from sunset cruises and stand up paddle boarding to harbourside strolls and coastal rambles. During the sunnier months, the town hosts a number of gala events including the ever-popular Lymington Seafood Festival, a lively July carnival, regattas and regular sailing jamborees. Listen to some summer jazz in the bandstand gardens before a dip in the town’s historic sea water baths, renowned for its rejuvenating mud minerals, and if you’re a wildlife enthusiast, a short walk to the marshes and lagoons of Keyhaven Nature Reserve is a must.

Lymington has its own railway station with mainline links from London Waterloo to nearby Brockenhurst. There are also regular bus services with links to the coastal resort of Bournemouth and the maritime city of Southampton, plus, you’ll also be able to pick up the New Forest tour bus and enjoy an open-top safari. If you’ve had your fill of landlubbing, a quick channel hop on the car and passenger ferry to the Isle of Wight might be just the ticket.

Discover one of the UK’s most delightful port towns when you book a stay in Lymington. Take a look at some of our stunning Lymington holiday cottages and start planning your very own south coast adventure.

An endearing 200-year-old inn which welcomes families and dogs. A great place for a drink or bite to eat. You’ll find a selection of excellent real ales and drinks which can be taken outside to a large, pretty beer garden, equipped with big play area for the youngsters. If it’s a nippy, inside is a huge log fire to keep you warm and toasty. Food at The White Heart is really good, with menus offering some exciting alternatives to the usual pub classics.

Excellent museum that tells the story of the town and local area and also has space for changing exhibitions. Also acts as the local visitor info centre and has plenty of information about things to do in the area. There's also a nice gift shop and super little cafe.

September 2023

Great little museum. Very informative about the history of the area and even our teenagers enjoyed the dinosaur exhibit.

August 2022

A bit of a hidden gem really, very good and informative displays in a well laid out and spacious environment, we particularly liked the community involvement with a group of local children very actively enjoying the surroundings, the coffee shop and the engaging and helpful staff. If anything the museum could sell itself to the public better - we nearly didn't go in as there was little to explain what was inside other than the art galleries

May 2022

Wonderful art exhibition and everyone was very helpful. Great cafe and recommend the coffee and biscuits!

March 2024

A lovely place to stay. So much to see and do locally and within easy reach.

August 2023

Milford on Sea is a very quintessential English village which has retained all its charm. The seafront is a delight to stroll along and The Needles Eye Cafe produces lovely coffee and lunches which is well worth a visit. A walk around Sturt Pond is also enjoyable and through to the village.

A proper gem. Great location for the new forest. The village is great and was only a short walk from our house. Not too busy or full of holiday makers. We will be back.

October 2021

One of my favourite places

Good place to go if you have a buggy or wheelchair as there is a tarmac path along the top of the cliffs with great views of the Needles, plenty of parking and a kiosk serving refreshments.

September 2020

Lovely village with adequate shops on a very pretty green.

September 2019

Due to my husband breaking his leg we hired a mobility scooter for our holiday. It was a joy to ride along the front at Milford. Wonderful views of The Needles and lots of benches along the way too. Great access from the car parks. Would be great if the short path from Milford to Keyhaven could be the same good surface. We felt the rough stones would be too hard to ride on.

June 2019

Love Milford on Sea so old fashioned hasn't changed much since I use go as a child in the 1960/70s

April 2019

great walking area, small cafe-the needles, children climbing play park- crashing waves over stoned beach

March 2019

Barton on Sea
(6 miles)

(2)

A stony beach with sandy areas as the tide goes out, and a great spot to do some fossil hunting. The cliffs are subject to considerable coastal erosion and at times parts of the beach can be cordoned off. The Beachcomber Café on the cliff top is one of the most popular cafés in the region. Plenty of parking in car parks along the cliff top as well as on-road parking.

Highcliffe Beach
Highcliffe Beach
(7 miles)

Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.

To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.

Nice beach with good facilities

April 2023

Beautiful beach, lots of sand for youngsters- definitely been high on our favourites list, for more than 30 years and still is now the 'children' are nearly 30! - well worth the drive from New Forest. The Noisy Lobster is great and now has an 'outdoor upstairs' too. The Beach Cafe, half-way along, is excellent too- used to do very good carrot cake! The connecting beach towards Steamer Point is dog-friendly all year which is a bonus. Walking to the quay end, you can catch the ferry to Hengistbury Head which is beautiful beach too and often quieter (top favourite!) Even this last week (JULY 2021) the 'kids' wanted to crab-fish from Mudeford Quay!!

June 2021

Second visit and loved the property Hope to return again dv

October 2020

Very well equipped. Excellent for the dog - nice walks straight from the house. Information and guidance for COVID was good,

September 2020

Two of our party were 90 and 86, so the bungalow was perfect. It was very well equipped and well situated and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The owner was very helpful with a laundry changeover and local information. The bungalow was very clean when we arrived, but some of the dishes in the cupboard in the corner unit were not. It wasn’t a problem as we got them clean. It must be impossible to check every single item. I hope that we left everything in good order. We did have a couple of glass breakages in the dishwasher and have left £10 to cover replacement. We were extremely lucky with the weather and made full use of the patio and garden area. Lymington was much busier than when we came last September and although we did go out for quite a few meals, the bungalow was a lovely quiet haven away from all the bustle. We played golf at the Lymington golf centre and also had a go at the Adventure golf which was great fun. We had good meals at the Ship, the Haven among others but our favourite place to eat was the Fisherman’s Rest. Also worth mentioning were the takeaways we had from Deep Blue fish and chip shop and the Wok Inn on the Milford Road, both very good.

September 2020

We had a wonderful stay and cannot state how much this helped to our overall holiday experience.

August 2020

Fantastic, will book again in the future.

August 2020

We had a great week and the weather wasn't too bad! We managed to visit Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight, Beaulieu, Hurst Castle, Calshot Castle as well as exploring Lymington itself. The St Barbe Museum and Art Gallery and Poole Museum are recommended. Being so close to food shops such as Waitros and M&S was a bonus

September 2019

We very much enjoyed our stay at Belmore End. The well equipped bungalow provided a fantastic base for our holiday in Lymington with plenty of space in the house and the garden to relax. We particularly liked the thoughtful welcome pack, and I very much appreciated a decent TV and good broadband!

August 2019

We enjoyed our stay. The bungalow was well stocked with everything we needed and was perfect for a toddler as there were no stairs. I didn’t mind being asked to water the garden plants, but the water in the water butt was rancid.
