All you need to know
A small but interesting town offering a great base to explore the surrounding pretty heathland and forest landscape, and also Dorset to the west.
A little to the west of Ringwood and just over the Hampshire county border in to Dorset, is the small town of Verwood and it’s neighbouring the village Three Legged Cross. Both conurbations are surrounded by heathland and pretty countryside.
You’ll find all the shops you need for provisions, including a large supermarket and two wonderful markets. The weekly Indoor Market 10 am - 1 pm is every Friday in the Memorial Hall, selling handmade crafts, gifts, baked goods and home-made and locally grown produce. A Farmers Market visits the fourth Saturday, every month from 9am – 1pm. It’s a real foodie haven for every day basics to scrumptious home-made artisan specialities.
There are some lovely pubs in Fordingbridge serving great food – you should try The Albion and The Swans. The Cinnamon Lounge serves a fantastic curry and if you love Italian food; then Al Trullo has a firm reputation for delicious meat and pasta dishes, complimenting their traditional pizza selection.
‘The Hub’ is a multi-purpose centre for the town. It shows films and presents local concerts and plays. You’ll also find art displays and exhibitions adorning the walls of the ‘The Hub Bistro’ which serves drinks and good value meals. The Verwood Heritage Centre is worth a visit, packed with local history including a unique Primitive Country Pottery workshop – for which the town was once famous.
‘Dorset Heavy Horse Farm Rescue Centre’ is close by. It’s a great day out for all ages with wagon, tractor and trailer rides, pygmy goats, kune-kune pigs, Inuit snow dogs and farm animals. There’s a zip wire, undercover Go-Kart arena for Adults and children, little pedal tractors, ‘fun’ straw barn, and play areas. There’s also lots of heritage and history to learn about through talks and shows.
A couple of miles away is Moors Valley Country Park. This is a 1000-acre park to walk, cycle and explore. Kids love to clamber on the wooden sculptures of the Adventure Trail. There’s also a Tree Top Trail, playground, countless picnic spots, a golf centre, café/restaurant and if you haven’t brought your bikes, you can hire them from the cycle centre. Jump aboard the authentic narrow-gauge steam railway and change trains at a miniature railway ‘station’ for the trip back. Visitors travel for miles to try the ‘Go Ape Tree Top Adventure’ and Forest Segway’s – fantastic fun!
There are three annual events that take place in Verwood; The Spring bank holiday Carnival, August bank holiday ‘Rustic Fayre’ and fireworks event ‘Flameburst’ at the end of October.
The perfect rainy day activity, based on Bournemouth’s sea front. Featuring fish from several different areas including the Amazon, Great Barrier Reef and Key West. Also a virtual interactive dive cage .

We think this is the best place to visit in the whole Dorset/New Forest area! We have been here three times over the years and it gets better every time. It strikes the perfect balance of being traditional, non-commercial and unique but also hugely entertaining and absolutely loads to do for young and old!

Moors Valley Country Park and Forest is the natural way to have fun with the whole family in Dorset, learning about and interacting with mini beasts and reptiles. They have regular events including a Gruffalo hunt, offer accessible trails in beautiful surroundings, as well as cycle tracks, hikes, Go Ape and even their own railway, so there’s plenty to do with the whole family, including the dog.

We had 6 children with us (aged 5 down to 10 weeks old) and had a wonderful day here, walking through the forest, going on the little train ride and the nature trail.

Lovely place for a visit either for walking or cycling. Great for kids

Lovely country park. Very interesting play structures for the kids set during a lovely forest walk - with an excellent high tree walk for all ages. no entrance fee - just pay for parking. The park has an excellent miniature railway - really well supported and maintained - it has a really extensive layout with realistic signalling. It is operated like a real railway. Great fun. Food available - but in times of social distancing it was really busy with queues which is understandable. All in all a fab place to visit - kids loved it. There is also a Go Ape centre at the park for additional cost - but outside the age range for our kids so we didn't try this.

Excellent entertainment for everyone, plenty of activities for most age groups, food acceptable and basis, no rubbish bins so if picnicking you need to take everything away with you, they do however accept rubbish accumulated on purchases made on site. A good day out. Lots of parking spaces.

Favourite pub of the holiday!!!!! Friendly staff, waitress was excellent, wore. Me out just watching her running about. Food was delicious and I’ve never been served such hot food anywhere. We were allowed to decide where we sat even though we had a little dog with us. Very varied menu and quick efficient service and very reasonably priced.

Alum Chine is a wide sandy beach with a paddling pool and large adventure playground, making it the perfect beach to visit if you have young children in tow.
Meanwhile, the scenic sub-tropical gardens behind the beach with stunning views out to the Solent are a big draw for the older visitor. Due to the mild micro-climate along this stretch of the south coast, it's possible to grow many exotic species successfully.
The beach also boasts Blue Flag status, beach huts for hire and a large car park, as well as a regular bus service to and from Bournemouth Centre. The popular Land Train also links Alum Chine with other beaches along the long sandy stretch of Bournemouth seafront.
