All you need to know
If you’re looking for a seaside holiday on the Solent coast yet want to be a stone’s throw from the stunning New Forest with its myriad of walks and vibrant wildlife, a holiday cottage in Hythe is the perfect place.
For such a small village there is so much to see and do in Hythe. Its seafront location surrounded by open forest has attracted some famous faces over the years, including T E Lawrence (aka Lawrence of Arabia) and inventor of the hovercraft, Sir Christopher Cockerell.
Pop into the bustling marina development with its bevvy of restaurants, shops and bars, the perfect spot to spend time watching enormous cruise ships and laden cargo vessels frequent Southampton docks, or take a stroll along Hythe’s Georgian high street.
Your Hythe holiday claim to fame can include a trip on the electric train which runs a colossal 640 metres, winning Hythe Pier a Guinness World Record as the oldest working pier train in the world!
There’s a great street market on Tuesdays selling local produce, fresh flowers, jewellery and more, and you can hop on the half hourly ferry for a day’s shopping in the mighty retail park of Southampton’s West Quay.
If you’d rather get in touch with Mother Nature, The Solent Way walking route passes through the village of Hythe, and there are countless woodland ambles and circular pub walks to explore. Nearby Lepe Country Park offers beautiful coastal walks, bike rides and nature trails.
Being so close to the water, Hythe is a great base if you’d like to try your hand at water sports, either on The Solent or Beaulieu River.
The Beach Bus runs in the summer holidays from Hythe Ferry to Lymington, stopping at popular attractions such as Lepe Country Park, Exbury Gardens, the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu and Buckler’s Hard. Your ticket also gives you discounts and a free ice cream at Lepe.

A great day out for all the family. We spent all day here and would visit again.
August 2017
Incredible place, well worth a visit (especially if you have a car-mad kid or two!). Really good day out- we did ours the same day as one of their Special days (Alfa day) which was good.
December 2017
A good day out - even if you do not like cars! Our grandson particularly enjoyed the museum and the 'Top Gear' attraction. The remains of the Abbey are worth seeing and one can dress up as a monk! Our favourite attraction was the demonstration of falconry - absolutely fascinating and we learnt a great deal about the birds and the history of falconry.
August 2018
Such a great day out! Museum is facinating and interactive. Combined with the beautiful Palace House this is a must do attraction.
September 2018
Fantastic day out for any car enthusiasts
April 2019
Lots to see and do if visiting all the attractions here.A very good day out.
October 2020
A great place to visit for all ages, with the older ones enjoying nostalgic memories of past motoring! It is a good venue if the weather is bad and well worth the entrance fee.
September 2021
Rey interesting but we thought the museum was past its best and needs some investment
October 2021
A very nice day out. Everyone enjoyed it even those who are not so interested in cars.
April 2022
Outstanding, very interesting, and staff were friendly and made visitors welcome
May 2022
An enjoyable way to spend a day (or more!) lots to see, as well as the motors the gardens are beautiful, we found the wartime spy exhibition really interesting and surprising! Arrows to steer round the main exhibition much appreciated- it's a bit of a maze! Top marks to the staff - everyone was friendly, helpful, informative and welcoming, made the visit extra special.
June 2022
Having been to the excellent Motor Museum several times before, we decided to upgrade our annual pass and visit the sculpture exhibition which is on until September. We can thoroughly recommend this extra attraction, we are not usually into culture but the variety of topics and designs was fascinating and very enjoyable, recommended. The cafe is also very good.
June 2023
Fabulous day out. It’s not cheap to visit but we really enjoyed. May not be suitable for young families. Only downside was that we went for lunch at the cafe and they had stopped serving hot food at 2.30pm and all the sandwiches /wraps had gone. Only cakes left !
September 2023
Enjoyed a day out at Beaulieu, reasonably quite as out of school holidays and we were able to take advantage of the monorail, the bus and easy access to the exhibitions. Also took a walk around the Mill Pond walk which gave a fabulous view of the Pond at Beaulieu and over to the bridge. We also took advantage of the free return to revisit the main exhibition on a very wet day enabling the motor fan more time to read all the information .
October 2023
Formerly the gatehouse of the medieval Beaulieu abbey, Palace House has been part of the Montagu family since 1538 and retains its spectacular medieval style. On the banks of the Beaulieu River surrounded by the beauty of the New Forest, this historic country house is filled with historic treasures and memorabilia to discover as you wander around the house and gardens.

Enjoyed. Staff very friendly
May 2018
Excellent value.lots to do here, could easily spend the whole day if visiting all the attractions at this venue.
October 2020
Interesting visit but expensive. The children’s play area was excellent.
November 2020
This was great! We spent the entire day there from when it opened at 10am until it closed at 6pm. There was so much to see and learn, the children loved the monorail and vintage bus rides and the play area was one of the best we have been to (and we have been to a lot!). The best bit however were the two talks given by the Palace House falconer about his birds and what they do. It was so informative and amazing - the bloke needs a payrise!
August 2021
Very much worth visiting
October 2021
Really interesting; very welcoming- a lovely place to visit

Great day canoeing. Very knowledgeable guide.

As if the name itself wasn’t intriguing enough, Fuzzacker Guided Walks are named after the local word for the Dartford Warbler which dodges around in the gorse bushes of the New Forest. So duck, dive and explore on their guided walks around this beautiful part of the world, taking in the New Forest with the added benefit of local knowledge and a passion for the conservation of the area.

A traditional Thai restaurant located in the centre of Hythe. All food served is freshly made with local ingredients and all Thai ingredients are imported directly from Thailand. The dishes are all made to order, so you can make your meal as mild, or hot as you would like. A must for all Thai food lovers.
Thai Corner (T: 023 8084 9166) Pylewell Road, Hythe SO45 6AN
Best Thai restaurant ever! The food is outstanding. Would really recommend getting a few starters and sharing because we just couldn't get enough of them. It is always busy here so you need to book in advance but well worth the wait!
June 2017
Enjoy original low beams and dark wood floors in this cosy bar and restaurant on the high street in Hythe. Serving modern English and Mediterranean cuisine, including a variety of local fish and game along with delicious pasta and other Italian dishes.
Hobbits (T:023 8084 8524) 6B High Street, Hythe, Southampton SO45 6AH
Visited Hobbits for a last minute evening out. The staff were really helpful and manged to squeeze us in to an already busy restaurant. The portions are massive and the standard of food is very, very good. Would recommend the seafood platter.
June 2017
Seashells is a contemporary lounge and restaurant with spectacular views across Hythe Pier and Southampton Water. Serving local fresh cuisine with seafood ultimately on the menu.
Seashells (T: 023 8084 7188) Hythe SO45 6AG
Grab a pint and sit outside overlooking Hythe Promenade with fa reaching views across Southampton Water. The British pub serves delicious home-cooked food, a range of cask ales as well as showing all sporting events on their Sky HD TV. For all you musical fans, live music is on weekly.
Lord Nelson (T: 023 8084 2169) 5 High Street, Hythe SO45 6AG
Busy and popular pub, sometimes a bit of an ordeal getting to the bar as it's so packed. Popular with youngsters. Live music at the weekends - good atmosphere.
June 2017
Enjoy spectacular views over Hythe Marina whilst experiencing some of most genuine Italian cooking around. The menu features classic and contemporary dishes, including fresh fish and Mediterranean plates, prepared using local ingredients.
La Vista (T: 023 8020 7730) Hythe Marina, Hythe SO45 6DY
Some of the best views of the Solent can be enjoyed from over a mile of beach and pine fringed cliffs. Historic D-Day remains, wildflower meadows and children's play area. Beach front car park.
A beautiful shingle beach with pretty painted beach huts, plenty of parking, and excellent coastal walks along Hurst spit to Hurst Castle with clear views of the Isle of Wight and needles. The superb Raft Rocks Restaurant is worth a visit with its Art deco style and roof terrace. You can also walk across the wildlife marshes to Keyhaven harbour and (in season) take the boat to Hurst Castle or the Isle of Wight.
Lovely village, plenty of shops and places to eat - no post office though.
June 2017
Fantastic sea location with goods pubs, shops etc
November 2017
Great for a dog walk along the spit to Hurst Castle. Needles Eye cafe is a welcome break, quite good food but very busy and a bit basic.
December 2017
great walking area, small cafe-the needles, children climbing play park- crashing waves over stoned beach
March 2019
Love Milford on Sea so old fashioned hasn't changed much since I use go as a child in the 1960/70s
April 2019
Due to my husband breaking his leg we hired a mobility scooter for our holiday. It was a joy to ride along the front at Milford. Wonderful views of The Needles and lots of benches along the way too. Great access from the car parks. Would be great if the short path from Milford to Keyhaven could be the same good surface. We felt the rough stones would be too hard to ride on.
June 2019
Lovely village with adequate shops on a very pretty green.
September 2019
Good place to go if you have a buggy or wheelchair as there is a tarmac path along the top of the cliffs with great views of the Needles, plenty of parking and a kiosk serving refreshments.
September 2020
One of my favourite places
July 2021
A proper gem. Great location for the new forest. The village is great and was only a short walk from our house. Not too busy or full of holiday makers. We will be back.
October 2021
Beautiful beach with views to The Isle of Wight. Good for swimming, picnics and walking. Very good car parking and public toilets. Lots of good places to eat and drink either next to the beach or in the village, a short walk away
July 2022
Brilliant beach.
September 2022
Lovely quiet location for a beach walk. Great for watching the sea and waves without the crowds.
June 2023
Milford on Sea is a very quintessential English village which has retained all its charm. The seafront is a delight to stroll along and The Needles Eye Cafe produces lovely coffee and lunches which is well worth a visit. A walk around Sturt Pond is also enjoyable and through to the village.
June 2023
A lovely place to stay. So much to see and do locally and within easy reach.
August 2023
Lovely sea walk within 15 minutes of the cottage.
March 2024
A stony beach with sandy areas as the tide goes out, and a great spot to do some fossil hunting. The cliffs are subject to considerable coastal erosion and at times parts of the beach can be cordoned off. The Beachcomber Café on the cliff top is one of the most popular cafés in the region. Plenty of parking in car parks along the cliff top as well as on-road parking.
Super walk, nice and easy and great place for a meal or tea and cake by the car park.
April 2019
A pleasant walk along the cliff top and along the beach. There was less cliff than last time we went to the New Forest.
June 2023
Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.
To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.
A picturesque, tree-lined beach of shingle, and sand at low tide. Good facilities on the cliff top including an excellent tea room, public toilets, baby change and a children’s play area in the Castle gardens. Plenty of parking and sloping access down to the beach. Highcliffe Castle beach is dog-friendly all year round.
Lovely clean sandy beach and a really i would highly recommend this spot for your car to break down takes the ouch out of waiting for the recovery truck
April 2017
Lovely
April 2019
Very picturesque beach with great access, looks good for a beach day
