There’s nothing more wonderful than sitting in the sunshine, surrounded by friends and family with your favourite drink in hand – even more so if you have a full belly from a delicious meal!

The New Forest landscape is studded with historic thatched pubs and ancient Inns, many with breath-taking views and plenty of outdoor space for alfresco dining and drinking. Here are five of our favourites.

1. The White Buck, Burley

This pretty pub has a stunningly beautiful beer garden surrounded by lofty trees and towering rhododendrons, which are breathtakingly spectacular when in flower. There’s plenty of room for everyone including dogs (the pub is very pooch friendly!). Children will love the little trail that twists and turns through the trees. Food at The White Buck is well above average and caters well for vegetarians. Choose from the main menu, but don’t miss the specials board – it’s amazing!

2. High Corner Inn, Linwood

The setting of this old inn is absolutely stunning. It’s a bit of a challenge to find, but once you do you’re in for a treat. The High Corner Inn is surrounded by open forest with no traffic noise at all, and offers a selection of walks from the car park. The beer garden is large and spacious, with plenty of tables to while away the afternoon sipping on some particularly good beer and excellent home-cooked food.

3. The Alice Lisle, Rockford

A popular pub for those in the know – and that includes the donkeys who love to gather in front of the pub! The beer garden is large enough to cope for when it gets busy, which is often the case in the warmer months as food here is superb. There’s an aviary and small play park to keep the youngsters entertained and regular BBQ’s and specials. The menu covers all the pub classics, plus some more deliciously different dishes.

4. The Turf Cutters, East Boldre

Another great location for really good pub nosh and well-kept beer. The beer garden is big with lots of tables and an undercover area in case a pesky British shower trundles past. There’s an adventure play area, and the pub often has a bouncy castle in the garden which keeps the kids occupied and happy. The menu is fun with options including ‘Wild Boar and Chorizo burgers’ and ‘Local Dressed Crab Salad’ plus all the usual pub fare.

5. The Green Dragon, Brook

The beer garden at this pub is enormous with plenty of seating in full sunlight or under the dabbled shade of huge trees. Whichever table, you’ll enjoy far reaching views over the forest, it’s wildlife, free roaming New Forest ponies and crescendos of birdsong from Mother Nature’s jukebox. The Green Dragon is exactly the sort of place you’d hope to find if you’re looking for a lazy afternoon with a scrumptious lunch.
