Downton

Just outside the New Forest boundary is Downton village, straddling the River Avon and the River Nadder where swans and kingfishers are content neighbours. It’s very much a quintessentially English village, terribly pretty with thickly thatched cottages, peaceful walks, good eating pubs and a handful of independent shops. It’s a quick ten-minute trip in the car to Salisbury to stock up your cupboards and the same drive to open forest for walks.

92 The Borough is a dreamy cottage which sleeps three. The owners have worked hard to retain its heritage, heart and cosy atmosphere. Inside it’s bright and roomy in natural hues with plenty of room upstairs for a spacious double and single bedroom. The cottage-style garden pops with splashes of colour and provides a perfect spot to while away a few hours with some delicious produce from the local farm shop. Find out more

Holmsley

If you’re looking for a rural setting in the middle of dappled woods with walks from the front door, Holmsley is a great choice. More an area than a village, you’ll have ponies, donkeys, cows and woodland wildlife as your neighbours. Ferne Dene Farm Shop in Bashley (a mile or so away) is where locals in the forest go to shop, and there are great pubs for lunch and dinner close by. For a change of scene, the coastline and sandy beaches of Highcliffe are just four miles south.

Trefusis is a big beauty, sleeping up to 10 guests in five bedrooms, all on one level, so it’s great for multigenerational families. It’s got everything you could possibly want in a holiday home – an outdoor kitchen with pizza oven, a kitchen garden which guests are welcome to harvest, a bike store, year-round undercover hot tub with outdoor TV and a tennis table. Inside the mellow hues of the enormous oak frame sets the scene for social gatherings, and there’s plenty of space with a snug and study for some alone time in addition to the huge kitchen, living and dining room.
