The New Forest – The Ultimate Staycation Location

Picnic-New-Forest

UK staycations are on the increase, and holiday makers are beginning to realise that a break in our green and pleasant lands can leave you feeling just as rejuvenated and refreshed as an expensive, two weeks overseas. We live in one of the world’s most iconic and historic countries, attracting millions of overseas visitors every year – and they love it!

It’s estimated we spend around 20% of our wages on holidays. So, knowing how much to budget for spending money, as well as transport and accommodation is pretty high up on the list when deciding where to go. Choosing to stay in the UK means you aren’t at the mercy of exchange rates, which have really suffered since Brexit. A staycation means you can plan your finances knowing how much things will cost and have a pretty good idea (if not, an exact amount) of how much to put aside for attractions, meals out and days exploring.

Most holidays abroad require a great deal of travelling. Hours and hours spent waiting at airports, queuing to check in, security and passport control and tired tears from the children when you tell them the flight has been delayed another 2 hours. Swap that for a car trip with coffee stops and maybe a nice pub lunch to break the journey and everyone is happy.

The most obvious benefit about staycationing is that travelling is so much easier. No lost luggage, time zones and recuperation to worry about, nor car hire hassles and constantly reminding yourself to drive on the correct side of the road. Just pack what you need, throw it in to the boot and off you go. Anything you’ve forgotten can be bought locally, leaving you with more time to relax, chill out and make the most of your time off.

But why choose the New Forest?

Because the New Forest national park is an absolute gem! Holiday in 220 square miles of coastline, ancient woodland, rivers, ponds and heathlands dotted with 9000 free roaming ponies, donkeys, cattle and the odd domestic pig. It’s packed with vibrant wildlife, history, heritage, castles and an impressive selection of fantastic village pubs, cafes and restaurants – perfect for a pit stop whilst out walking or cycling. It’s a mecca for anyone and everyone who wants to unwind and have fun.

There are also some fantastic days out and attractions to visit as well. Here’s a few of our favourite places to visit :

Beaulieu   – World famous National Motor Museum, Palace House and 13th century Abbey. With lots of attractions for kids, and dogs welcome in the grounds, Beaulieu provides a great day out for all the family.

Exbury Gardens   – 200 acres of flowers, themed gardens, rare trees, azaleas, camellias & rhododendrons. Kids will love a trip on the steam railway, the adventure playground and spotting all the wildlife – all topped of with an ice cream at the on-site tea room. Dogs welcome.

Buckler’s Hard  – An 18th century shipbuilding village, home to the ships built for Nelson’s fleet at Trafalgar. With tea rooms and plenty of places for a picnic, there’s loads of reasons to spend the day at Buckler’s Hard. Dogs welcome on a lead.

Hurst Castle  – Walk the 1.5-mile pebble spit to Henry VIII’s coastal fortress overlooking the Isle of Wight, then treat yourself with a cup of tea and delicious homemade food at Hurst Castle’s cafe. Friendly dogs on leads welcome.

Highcliffe Castle  – Visit the majestic former home of Mr Selfridge from the TV show of the same name.

The Solent Way – A 60-mile walk, split into 8 distinct sections through Hampshire countryside and coastline. Each section provides an opportunity for a full day walk, many of which enjoy fabulous views of the Isle of Wight and beautiful Hampshire coast.

Lepe Country Park  – Amazing views, D-Day WWII landmarks and the shoreline is about a mile to the Isle of Wight. Watch cruise ships and huge tankards navigating their way from Southampton docks, or visit the beautiful new sensory garden. Kids can let off steam in the adventure playground or take part in one of the many events. Cafe on site, picnic areas and dogs welcome.

So, there really is something for everyone for a staycation in the New Forest.
