Step inside this effortlessly stylish, luxury cottage and you’ll instantly feel right at home. Comfy sofas and blissful beds are adorned with rich textures and fabrics. The walls are pallets of calming, muted shades with pops of colour amongst ancient beams and inglenook fireplaces. Downstairs, honey coloured floor tiles compliment the warm hues of the hand painted kitchen/breakfast room. A cosy snug by an inglenook fireplace offers a place to hide with a good book and something lovely to drink.  The lounge is undeniably captivating and a visual treat for the eye, with a glorious vaulted ceiling and large picture windows creating a sense of space and style. An enormous fireplace with wood burner dominates the far end of the room and creates a homely focal point. Upstairs are three specious bedrooms – a twin and 2 doubles, each with divine views of the forest and wildlife pootling about on the heathlands and woods. The enclosed pretty, bloom-filled garden flanks the cottage, providing an idyllically private spot for a tipple in the afternoon sunshine and al fresco dining, with forest birdsong providing the musical backdrop.

If you can bear to leave the serenity of Walnut Cottage, you could head to Highcliffe castle. The castle is more akin to a stately home, perched on the cliff top above the soft, golden sands of Highcliffe Beach – you can access the beach from the castle car park. Highcliffe Castle is the former home of Mr Selfridge, and appeared in the popular ITV’s television series of the same name. The castle was home to famous retailer Harry and his wife Rosalie, his mother Lois and his son Harry Jr. He is buried along with his wife and mother at St Mark’s church in Highcliffe.

If you need some retail therapy or need to visit a supermarket, it’s only 2 miles to the town of New Milton. Go on Wednesdays for a veritable display of artisan goods and local produce at the weekly street market. For lazy days swimming and sunbathing and maybe a fish and chip supper?, head to the pretty coastal villages of Milford on Sea and Barton on Sea, which are just 4 miles away.
