The scent of roasted chestnuts and heady mulled wine wafts through the air to create an old-fashioned holiday feel. In December, the New Forest’s ancient woods and heathlands are breathtakingly picturesque and liberally sprinkled with free-roaming ponies in thick woolly coats who plod through the frosty landscape. You’ll see lots of woodland animals and birds busying themselves outside your cottage window. Pull-on your walking boots and venture out the front door to explore fantastic forest walks, or head south to the coast and stroll along the beaches and clifftop trails. Close by are days out and attractions for all ages – cinema, pantomimes, fishing, spas and plenty of independent boutiques and shops, all of which will make your Christmas a great success. There are cottages with wood burners or open fires. Imagine lighting the fire after a forest walk to cosy up in front of the warmth of flickering flames. If you are not one for cooking, or don’t fancy being in charge of the Christmas Day lunch, don’t fret! We’d suggest booking into one of the forest’s many historic gastro pubs or maybe a swanky hotel. Stuff yourself silly and return to the space and privacy of your cottage to sprawl out with a glass of bubbly!

Choose from idyllic, rural bolt-holes for two, dog-friendly cottages, a large spacious pad surrounded by landscaped gardens or a swanky apartment in the centre of town.
