Rooms with a view at Highway Cottage
The views from this enchanting little dog-friendly cottage are simply stunning. Highway Cottage is a place to come and relax; watch the New Forest wildlife cavorting outside your window, and gaze at the far-reaching heath and woodland vistas crowned by big skies from the comfort of your armchair.
The living space of this forest hideaway is all upstairs on one level to take advantage of the spectacular views. Downstairs is an internal garage, utility room with a washer/dryer and sink. Stairs lead up to a large open-plan living area, where every wall is adorned with big picture windows to make the most of the gorgeous views, whilst letting sunshine pour in. The cottage is painted in light neutral colours against white high feature ceilings, which create comfortable, bright and spacious rooms with lovingly-restored solid wood floors.
The dual aspect kitchen comes with a cooker, microwave, fridge-freezer and dishwasher. As well as seating for two at the window-lined breakfast bar, a portioned wall leads to the lounge and dining area with four Adam style upholstered chairs around a matching solid wood dining table. The sitting room is home to a large leather sofa and an occasional chair. This space offers a place to indulge in views from a huge bay window, and when it gets dark and you fancy a night in, there’s a TV and DVD player.
Highway Cottage has two lovely bedrooms, both radiating comfort. The first is a dual aspect king-size double bedroom with an impressive wooden bedstead. The second is a good size twin room, again enjoying a dual aspect. The twin beds are wooden art deco style beds. Finally, an airy bathroom with bath and overhead shower completes the main floor.
Outside you’ll find an enclosed, private courtyard garden along with garden furniture for al-fresco dining or whiling away a few hours. But the magic of this holiday home is its views and location, being on the edge of the lively village of Brockenhurst. In fact, you are just a five-minute walk to the village high street, akin to one you would find some fifty years ago with a bakers, butchers, deli and greengrocers, all stocked with local produce, which rub shoulders with gift shops and a great selection of restaurants, eateries and gastro-style pubs.
You’ll love the fact that you can stroll home when you visit The Gin Bar (they have a huge selection of delicious artisan gins!), and for great pubs head to The Huntsman and The Snakecatcher. Some of our favourite restaurants include Alberto and Enzee for their amazingly good pizzas, Britannia Thai for an authentic taste of Thailand and White Tails for mouth-watering British/European dishes.
Aside from the obvious days of relaxing with a book or picnic, the majority of your days will probably involve making the most of the fresh, clean country air. There are endless walks and cycle tracks from the front door. Bring your own bike and safely store it at the cottagem or hire one from Cyclex Bike hire next to the mainline train station in the village. For a day out involving transport on two wheels, head over to Beaulieu to see the National Motor Museum, Palace House, Abbey and Gardens.
Other great days out include the historic market towns of Lymington and Christchurch. The award-winning golden beaches of Bournemouth Bay are a quick half an hour zip in the car – your nearest beach is just 8 miles away. Brockenhurst is also a great base for exploring further afield with Stonehenge, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and Marwell Zoo all an easy day trip. For families with younger children, take them to the UK’s number one family theme park, Paultons Park – Home of Peppa Pig World. They will also love Adventure Wonderland and there’s family fun on the Ringo’s at Snowtrax.
All in all, this fantastic holiday home in the New Forest is a great choice for couples, dog owners and small families.
