Just a fifteen-minute walk from the bustling New Forest capital town of Lyndhurst is the little village of Emery Down. Surrounded by open forest you’ll often see ponies, cattle, donkeys and maybe a deer or two walking past your window. This village is a wonderful location for wildlife, nature, walks and cycling.
Emery Green has an outstanding pub called the New Forest Inn, which has a lovely beer garden for those long summer days and two homely logs fires during the winter months. They serve hearty, good food all day including a specials board. In the main street, past some impressive timbered Alms Houses, visitors can see a delightfully quirky idea the locals came up with for keeping their traditional red phone box, after the line was disconnected. The community now have a cherished and popular phone box which is an information hub and book exchange! For more comprehensive shopping and dining options just pop into Lyndhurst, one mile away.
Emery Down has a village hall, village green and 19th Century church known for its lovely stained glass. The village has strong connections with Alice Liddle, who was the inspiration for the well-known novel ‘Alice in Wonderland’ written by family friend, Lewis Carroll. Alice and her family frequented the church when they lived in their mansion ‘Cuffnells’ in Swan Green, a short amble from the village between Emery Down and Lyndhurst. The mansion has sadly been demolished, but its grounds provide a pleasant spot for a picnic.
There is plenty of unrestricted parking on the lane outside.

The Swan Inn
(Less than a mile)
(2)
This family run pub has roots dating back to c.1731. There’s a large sunny beer garden to the rear, inside is the familiar warm and comfortable hues, dark wood, beams and exposed brickwork for a country pub of this age. There are daily specials alongside the main menu, which also changes on a regular basis. You’ll find the usual pub fare which is cooked well and in large hearty portions. Dogs welcome.
The Swan (T:02380 282203) Emery Down, SO43 7DT
A real disappointment. When we arrived there was one other couple in the whole place...understandable that it was empty at 7pm on a Saturday evening as the food was terrible. The one member of staff was very friendly and professional. Such a shame.
March 2024
Excellent food outside with all Covid measures in place.?

We popped in for a drink. The service was great and there was a good atmosphere
April 2024
Holly, the host of Renoufs was very knowledgable and gave good recommendations both for wine and cheese. The meal was amazing, we had the Ultimate vegetarian platter for 2 which was enough for us 4 ladies. The ambience was relaxing, price reasonable and will definitely be revisiting. All in all, a great experience! Thanks Holly.

The Fox & Hounds
(Less than a mile)
(8)
A friendly Georgian pub in Lyndhurst’s thriving high street. It’s often busy with both locals and visitors who come to drink, eat, take part in the quiz nights, events and listen to live bands on Saturday nights. Inside is spacious whilst staying cosy, especially with the log burner glowing on a winter’s day. During warmer months, you can sit outside in the large terraced beer garden.

The Mailmans Arms
(Less than a mile)
(5)
At the end of the high street, Mailmans Arms is a great place for people watching – the pub is next to the Maserati/Ferrari garage! The bar stocks real ales and a nice selection of wines, spirits and beverages. Home-made food is served all day and beautifully presented. Meat is from a local butcher, and vegetables from a greengrocer on the high street. The menu features popular pub classics alongside a daily specials board. There’s a monthly curry night and very popular Sunday carvery. Indoors is a large log fire, and when warm, there’s a choice of outdoor seating to the front of the pub and a beer garden to the rear. A separate TV room shows major sporting events.
Mailmans Arms, (T:02380 284196) Lyndhurst, SO43 7BE
A very friendly pub in which we eat twice, enjoying the food both times.
May 2023
The Mailman's Arms is a great pub with friendly staff, delicious cooked food, reasonable prices and the best thing for us was being able to hire one of the pods in the beer garden - we will definitely be returning when next in the New Forest.
April 2022
Found the one way system in and out of the pub totally over the top and unnecessary
October 2021
In these COVID-19 times it’s not great when you receive a glass of wine with the previous persons lipstick visible on the glass.

This was a lovely place to visit with a two year old on a very cold day. As well as the displays that you'd expect there is a play, reading and colouring area for small children. The staff were really helpful, especially when Nanna was looking for baby changing facilities and needed help with the lift. Nanna and the two year old also enjoyed a snack in the cafe - again staff were very helpful and the food was tasty! There was also a nice selection of reasonably priced gifts. We're looking forward to visiting again.
December 2019
Went on an event day, which was, for us, too busy. The tickets allowed to go in again within 6 days. Lovely and peaceful and managed to see round the palace. Staff very friendly and heloful. Our grandchildren had a great day

Barton on Sea
(11 miles)
(2)
A stony beach with sandy areas as the tide goes out, and a great spot to do some fossil hunting. The cliffs are subject to considerable coastal erosion and at times parts of the beach can be cordoned off. The Beachcomber Café on the cliff top is one of the most popular cafés in the region. Plenty of parking in car parks along the cliff top as well as on-road parking.
A pleasant walk along the cliff top and along the beach. There was less cliff than last time we went to the New Forest.
June 2023
Super walk, nice and easy and great place for a meal or tea and cake by the car park.
April 2019
Milford on Sea
(11 miles)
(16)
A beautiful shingle beach with pretty painted beach huts, plenty of parking, and excellent coastal walks along Hurst spit to Hurst Castle with clear views of the Isle of Wight and needles. The superb Raft Rocks Restaurant is worth a visit with its Art deco style and roof terrace. You can also walk across the wildlife marshes to Keyhaven harbour and (in season) take the boat to Hurst Castle or the Isle of Wight.
Lovely sea walk within 15 minutes of the cottage.
March 2024
A lovely place to stay. So much to see and do locally and within easy reach.
August 2023
Milford on Sea is a very quintessential English village which has retained all its charm. The seafront is a delight to stroll along and The Needles Eye Cafe produces lovely coffee and lunches which is well worth a visit. A walk around Sturt Pond is also enjoyable and through to the village.
June 2023
Lovely quiet location for a beach walk. Great for watching the sea and waves without the crowds.
June 2023
Brilliant beach.
September 2022
Beautiful beach with views to The Isle of Wight. Good for swimming, picnics and walking. Very good car parking and public toilets. Lots of good places to eat and drink either next to the beach or in the village, a short walk away
July 2022
A proper gem. Great location for the new forest. The village is great and was only a short walk from our house. Not too busy or full of holiday makers. We will be back.
October 2021
One of my favourite places
July 2021
Good place to go if you have a buggy or wheelchair as there is a tarmac path along the top of the cliffs with great views of the Needles, plenty of parking and a kiosk serving refreshments.
September 2020
Lovely village with adequate shops on a very pretty green.
September 2019
Due to my husband breaking his leg we hired a mobility scooter for our holiday. It was a joy to ride along the front at Milford. Wonderful views of The Needles and lots of benches along the way too. Great access from the car parks. Would be great if the short path from Milford to Keyhaven could be the same good surface. We felt the rough stones would be too hard to ride on.
June 2019
Love Milford on Sea so old fashioned hasn't changed much since I use go as a child in the 1960/70s
April 2019
great walking area, small cafe-the needles, children climbing play park- crashing waves over stoned beach
March 2019
Great for a dog walk along the spit to Hurst Castle. Needles Eye cafe is a welcome break, quite good food but very busy and a bit basic.
December 2017
Fantastic sea location with goods pubs, shops etc
November 2017
Lovely village, plenty of shops and places to eat - no post office though.
June 2017
Highcliffe Beach
(11 miles)
Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.
To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.
Highcliffe Castle Beach
(11 miles)
(3)
A picturesque, tree-lined beach of shingle, and sand at low tide. Good facilities on the cliff top including an excellent tea room, public toilets, baby change and a children’s play area in the Castle gardens. Plenty of parking and sloping access down to the beach. Highcliffe Castle beach is dog-friendly all year round.
Very picturesque beach with great access, looks good for a beach day
October 2021
Lovely
April 2019
Lovely clean sandy beach and a really i would highly recommend this spot for your car to break down takes the ouch out of waiting for the recovery truck
April 2017
Avon Beach
(12 miles)
(2)
A family friendly beach close to Mudeford and Christchurch Harbour with plenty to do for all. For those with disabilities or small children there is a beach level carpark, and to keep everyone safe there is a designated bathing area and a seperate area allocated for watersports, all overseen by lifeguards in the summer months. This pretty sand and shingle beach is backed by trees and countryside and if you fancy some fresh local seafood or simply a coffee, ice cream or a cold drink, the beach is home to the excellent Noisy Lobster, serving breakfast, lunch and supper all year round.
Nice beach with good facilities
April 2023
Beautiful beach, lots of sand for youngsters- definitely been high on our favourites list, for more than 30 years and still is now the 'children' are nearly 30! - well worth the drive from New Forest. The Noisy Lobster is great and now has an 'outdoor upstairs' too. The Beach Cafe, half-way along, is excellent too- used to do very good carrot cake! The connecting beach towards Steamer Point is dog-friendly all year which is a bonus. Walking to the quay end, you can catch the ferry to Hengistbury Head which is beautiful beach too and often quieter (top favourite!) Even this last week (JULY 2021) the 'kids' wanted to crab-fish from Mudeford Quay!!
August 2021
February 2024
December 2023 I really enjoyed my stay here at the Old Post Office during Christmas and Boxing Day, the house was very comfortable and made us all feel welcome when we arrived, and enjoyed the lovely walks in the area and visiting Lyndhurst and Lymington and would definitely recommend the Old Post Office to anyone who would like to have a holiday in the New Forest.
February 2024
Excellent (again!). Shame the weather is not as predictable as the excellence of The Old Post Office! But still great walks and cycling paths, and good places to eat and drink. Recommend New Forest edge Roastery for coffee in Lyndhurst.

December 2022
A wonderful property, which is equipped with everything you need. This is by far the best property we have ever stayed in and would highly recommend to other friends and family.
November 2022
We all enjoyed our stay, and the property was excellent. Attention has been paid to every fine detail. The welcome pack was a lovely thought and there was everything you could possibly need in the kitchen (appliances and equipment). The furnishings are a really high standard, and everything was spotlessly clean. Would stay again and recommend to others.
November 2022
Our third visit here and we love it! We will be back next year. Thank you
November 2022
Our third visit to The Old Post Office in Emery Down. Fantastic location and beautiful cottage, lots of space, comfy beds, kitchen well stocked, walks on doorstep and even the donkeys and ponies come to say hello by the window. Lovely and peaceful and pub within 5 min walk.
September 2022
What a wonderful holiday house! We have had a fantastic week and the location was perfect. Thank you for all the extra touches - our dog Fred appreciated the treats! We have stayed in the New Forest many times over the past 20 years, but The Old Post Office has been the best house and location. We will be back! Thank you!
August 2022
We had a lovely stay in your beautifully decorated and very well-equipped house. We loved all the extra touches, such as the treats (for humans and dogs!). Thank you very much!
August 2022
We echo the sentiments of other visitors here. We've had a great time interspersing activities with lovely walks and frequent meals out. We very much liked the Oak at Bank and The Swan down the road. The New Forest is awesome and the guided walk we started with gave us a great appreciation of what we saw.
August 2022
We have all enjoyed a great holiday here. This house has suited us all so well, and we have appreciated all the thoughtful attention to details here. Many thanks.

We have enjoyed a perfect holiday. The location, the cottage and the weather have all been wonderful. We appreciated the roominess of the cottage and the upstairs sitting room was ideal for our one year old toddler as it could be made safe for her. Thank you from all of us.

The New Forest Inn

A popular pub with New Forest folk for its great selection of local ales, beers, wines and delicious home-cooked food. The New Forest Inn’s location surrounded by forest and countryside means you’ll often see ponies, cattle, and pigs wandering past its doors. On nippy days, the Inn keeps its two real log fires burning. In the summer months, an enchanting beer gardens offers a beautiful spot to sit and relax.

This was a great pub, very friendly staff, great food and dog friendly too

This was a lovely place to visit with a two year old on a very cold day. As well as the displays that you'd expect there is a play, reading and colouring area for small children. The staff were really helpful, especially when Nanna was looking for baby changing facilities and needed help with the lift. Nanna and the two year old also enjoyed a snack in the cafe - again staff were very helpful and the food was tasty! There was also a nice selection of reasonably priced gifts. We're looking forward to visiting again.
December 2019

Lovely village, plenty of shops and places to eat - no post office though.

Avon Beach
