With its thatched cottages and quiet primrose lanes, it’s easy to see why the idyllic village of Brockenhurst is considered one of the region’s most desirable places to reside.

What’s particularly lovely about this charming setting is the way it blends effortlessly into its beautiful New Forest surroundings; ponies, donkeys, ducks and deer all often seen wandering freely along the honeysuckle byways.

Visitors to Brockenhurst adore its gentle pace and rustic charm, from its picturesque ‘watersplash’ ford to its olde-worlde inns, this really is one of the most enchanting corners of the New Forest.

The history of Brockenhurst can be traced back as far as the Bronze Age burial mounds that bespeckle the surrounding heathland. What today is the largest village in the New Forest used to amount to four modest Saxon manors which fell between the boundaries of William the Conqueror’s vast hunting ground.

One of the village’s most venerated residents stands rooted in the graveyard of St Nicholas' Church; a mighty yew tree, believed to have cast its shade for a thousand years or more, the oldest tree in the forest. Also keep an eye out for the grave of Harry ‘Brusher’ Mills, the legendary New Forest snake-catcher, hermit, and authority on countryside lore.

The village has upheld its colourful and longstanding tradition of fetes and festivals, playing host to the annual New Forest and Hampshire County Show which runs for three days during July.

A holiday in Brockenhurst places you in the heart of the magnificent New Forest with breathtaking scenery at every turn. One of the most stunning New Forest bridleways, the Rhinefield Ornamental Drive, forges its path through the leafy outskirts of the village on a route lined by glorious rhododendrons, azaleas, giant redwoods and Douglas firs.

One of the best ways to explore Brockenhurst’s gorgeous surroundings is by bike and you’ll find an impressive range of bicycles and accessories for hire at Brockenhurst’s cycle centre, from electric mountain bikes to dog trailers.

The South Taste Trail is a popular excursion local to the village, combining a scenic walk to the charming neighbouring parish of Burley with various stops at tea rooms, delicatessens and traditional country pubs - burning off the calories as you go.

If you’re of the opinion that four legs are better than two, the Brockenhurst Riding Stables offers pony trekking experiences for all abilities, or you might prefer a round of golf at the prestigious Brockenhurst Manor Golf Club.

While away an hour or two with a mooch around Brockenhurst’s traditional high street, where you can stock up on supplies at the local butchers, bakers and greengrocers, as well as the artisan outlets, independent shops, cafes, bistros and takeaways that line this ancient thoroughfare.

Brockenhurst serves as one of the New Forest’s eight train stations and is on the Weymouth to London - Waterloo Mainline. Local bus services run regularly to Lymington and Southampton, while the New Forest open-top bus (June to September) is an exciting way to travel between the area’s towns and villages.

We went several times and had coffee, cakes, scones and a gin flight or two. My only point is we went back at the same time on each visit and personally I would have liked to be acknowledged as a return visitor. I’m not saying it was bad service but this would have been five star treatment

July 2023

Brilliant bar, just a shame it closes at 8.00 p.m.

August 2021

Great enjoyed lunch there.

June 2021

There is a major problem with staying at Homelands, which is going home! This home has been so tastefully and thoughtfully decorated, fitted and kitted out, it has been a privilege to stay here. I mean which other holiday let gives a Dyson fan, Sonos sound system, curved Samsung TV with sound bar etc. But the owners have some exquisite taste. the tiles in the cloakroom and bathrooms, the furniture in the main living room-our home will seem quite second rate when we go back! Lighting is obviously a passion of thee owners - stunning. We enjoyed the landscaped garden and even in October having teat and crumpets in the ante afternoon sun. Train noise absolutely not an issue. The Village hall was closed because of CoVid, so can't common if noise at night would be an issue. Beds amazingly comfy and great rain showers, What's not to like. OK if pushed the oven controls are not intuitive but the instructions work! We'll be back!!

October 2020

Unfortunately this bar was only opened for a couple of hours each day and at strange times and once we had got in from the day out and got ready, the pub was closed. Every pub in the village had a choice of different gins.

Self cooked steaks on hot stones. Cook it just how you like it. I loved it. Been before - will certainly go again.

Good food and good service. Music was a bit loud for us.

Possibly the greatest steak meal I have ever had. If you haven't tried the hot stone method of being served your steak dont miss it.

Absolutely delicious Thai food. Cannot wait to return

February 2022

Britannia Thai is a fantastic little restaurant within brockenhurst village. They offer both dine in and takeaway lunch and dinner services. The welcome on entering the restaurant is warm and genuine. The standard of food they provide is excellent and portion sizing is very generous. We can highly recommend the chicken satay and chicken Pad Thai noodles. Overall they provide fantastic value food. Definitely not to be missed when in brockenhurst.

July 2023

Very enjoyable meal, good service and nice to sit outside in the undercover seating.

June 2023

Great pub, would recommed

May 2023

Lovely food and friendly staff

April 2023

We went to this pub for the Sunday Roast which was a great disappointment and not cheap. The vegetables were virtually inedible, a knife would not cut through them and the green beans had barely seen the water. The waiter knew nothing about the wines, there was no atmosphere and the service not good. When we complained they offered us more vegetables which we declined and eventually they deducted 20% off the main meals.

October 2022

Lovely food served here. Nice friendly staff and they love dogs. Big bonus for us as trying to find good food and dog friendly is not easy

October 2022

Busy pub with really good covered outdoor eating area, appeared that dogs were welcome. Separate outdoor garden area for just drinking. Staff were friendly and helpful. The food was good, I had duck which came very pink so do say if you want it cooked through. Husband had fish and chips which was a plateful!.

September 2022

Great food and very good servy

August 2022

This was a VERY disappointing evening out. Having looked at the menu before we went some of us wanted pizza.......when we arrived the pizza oven was broken so no pizza available. In addition the 2 starters on the kids menu were garlic bread and vegetable sticks - with no pizza oven there was no garlic bread so vegetables the only option. We got put at a table that was wobbly so had to move. The cesar salad was also poor - dry chicken and missing several elements you would normally expect for a cesar salad. All in all an expensive, disappointing evening. We would not return if in the area again.

April 2022

Excellent

September 2021

When we arrived we were told that there were no mussels (apparently the waiter can't remember when they last had them). So we ordered chateaubriand - that was also not available. 'OK I will go with Ribeye but can I please swap the chips for salad'? Response - 'err sorry but the kitchen is quite busy so we can't swap anything...' At this point we wished we hadn't booked...! There are better places!

September 2021

Had a very bad experience at the Huntsman with an evening meal. The food was inedible sent it back..

September 2021

Lovely food and friendly staff

July 2021

Excellent pub. Within minutes walk from cottage. Food and staff good

June 2021

Lots of menu items unavailable (more than half) and quality of the remainder was poor.

June 2021

Very pleasant gastropub

June 2021

Excellent food and location was 100 yards from the house we were staying at.

June 2021

Excellent service. Our waiter was great and there was a lovely atmosphere. Fairly short menu. We felt the presentation of some dishes would have been greatly improved with additional colour by way of garnish/small salad.

May 2021

We had a fabulous Sunday lunch.. The staff were impeccable, nothing too much trouble. The food was fabulous. Very dog friendly. Would highly recommend.

September 2020

We had lunch here but it was a very limited menu-we had the sharing platter that was ok, but the evening food menu had more of a selection. Nice atmosphere.

November 2019

Very pleasant surroundings and good selection of food

September 2019

excellent food and excellent service

July 2019

This is the place for a really tasty pizza. They do a great range of lighter lunches aswell. Good selection of wines and beers

June 2019

We went as a family for Easter Sunday lunch. The food was excellent, fresh and hot. The staff were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble!

April 2019

Very popular so booked beforehand. Good food but quite slow service. Difficult to just go for a drink as for some reason don't have separate lounge

August 2018

This establishment came as a surprise. I took a friend there for lunch and we were much impressed by the interior and enjoyed our meal very much.

April 2018

We ate on one night and went for drinks on another night Was surprisingly busy for a Tuesday evening, but we were still seated at a pleasant, albeit non official dining table We were immediately welcomed and drinks orders taken, in a friendly but efficient manner We were left to choose our food, the children’s menus selected by our two girls (aged 10) were very good and ample, they came with a squash drink and ice cream for pudding I chose the sea bream and mash which was excellent, my partner chos the chicken which was also very good Service throughout was friendly and efficient We returned two days later , just for drinks, I don’t get the feeling that drinkers are their target customers, as the are was much colder and less welcoming than the dining area, I had a real ale which was very pleasant, my partner had a cocktail which was good, the two girls had mock tails, which were nowhere near the standard of our previous visit, no orange in one and didn’t taste as good, girls were a little disappointed This could be down to barman being under training, which to be fair he did explain he was new Overall an excellent venue, we shall be returning

February 2018

Great food and really good service.

February 2018

Great food and family friendly Small area allocated for dogs but often no space available so not dog friendly inside

February 2018

Only about 30 metres walk... Fabulous food great atmosphere. But book to make sure of a table as its very popular on Thurs - Sunday evenings

December 2017

Very good standard of food and pleasant, helpful staff. Thoroughly recommend!

December 2017

It was our first visit to this venue since the name change. The menu appeared a little more upmarket, unfortunately the service wasn't. They took our credit card when taking our order, but when it came to paying our bill we were told they were busy and we had to find the waiter who took it. In all it took something like 30 minutes trying to pay our bill, not the best way to finish an evening with 3 small children wanting their beds.

August 2017

we ate twice at The Huntsman. First time in garden as we had our dog. food was lovely but service very slow. second time we ate inside with all the family. Meal was superb and service excellent and waiter was very attentive

August 2017

Nice restaurant, very nicely decorated, good ambiance and service. We went for a dinner with our kids (3). The food kids menu, was perfect, my wife and daughter order the trout and duck both very good dishes. I ordered the rib eye, the menu says it has 35 days of maturing. The quality was bad, I would even doubt it was steak it almost looked like processed meet. My recommendation stick to the other dishes on the menu and avoid the steak selection. The rest of the experience was very positive.

Milford on Sea is a very quintessential English village which has retained all its charm. The seafront is a delight to stroll along and The Needles Eye Cafe produces lovely coffee and lunches which is well worth a visit. A walk around Sturt Pond is also enjoyable and through to the village.

October 2021

One of my favourite places

July 2021

Good place to go if you have a buggy or wheelchair as there is a tarmac path along the top of the cliffs with great views of the Needles, plenty of parking and a kiosk serving refreshments.

September 2020

Lovely village with adequate shops on a very pretty green.

September 2019

Due to my husband breaking his leg we hired a mobility scooter for our holiday. It was a joy to ride along the front at Milford. Wonderful views of The Needles and lots of benches along the way too. Great access from the car parks. Would be great if the short path from Milford to Keyhaven could be the same good surface. We felt the rough stones would be too hard to ride on.

The cliffs are subject to considerable coastal erosion and at times parts of the beach can be cordoned off. The Beachcomber Café on the cliff top is one of the most popular cafés in the region. Plenty of parking in car parks along the cliff top as well as on-road parking.

A pleasant walk along the cliff top and along the beach. There was less cliff than last time we went to the New Forest.

June 2023

Super walk, nice and easy and great place for a meal or tea and cake by the car park.

Highcliffe Beach
Highcliffe Beach
(8 miles)

Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.

To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.

A picturesque, tree-lined beach of shingle, and sand at low tide. Good facilities on the cliff top including an excellent tea room, public toilets, baby change and a children’s play area in the Castle gardens. Plenty of parking and sloping access down to the beach. Highcliffe Castle beach is dog-friendly all year round.

Avon Beach

A family friendly beach close to Mudeford and Christchurch Harbour with plenty to do for all.  For those with disabilities or small children there is a beach level carpark, and to keep everyone safe there is a designated bathing area and a seperate area allocated for watersports, all overseen by lifeguards in the summer months.  This pretty sand and shingle beach is backed by trees and countryside and if you fancy some fresh local seafood or simply a coffee, ice cream or a cold drink, the beach is home to the excellent Noisy Lobster, serving breakfast, lunch and supper all year round.

Nice beach with good facilities

April 2023

Beautiful beach, lots of sand for youngsters- definitely been high on our favourites list, for more than 30 years and still is now the 'children' are nearly 30! - well worth the drive from New Forest. The Noisy Lobster is great and now has an 'outdoor upstairs' too. The Beach Cafe, half-way along, is excellent too- used to do very good carrot cake! The connecting beach towards Steamer Point is dog-friendly all year which is a bonus. Walking to the quay end, you can catch the ferry to Hengistbury Head which is beautiful beach too and often quieter (top favourite!) Even this last week (JULY 2021) the 'kids' wanted to crab-fish from Mudeford Quay!!

March 2024

Wonderful stay, very high standard throughout and would definitely recommend staying.

October 2023

A fantastic property in a perfect base. Our second visit and we'll hopefully return

October 2023

Yes, we had a very comfortable week with the exception of the bathroom taps.

October 2023

Really enjoyed our stay. The location is great and generally the cottage, though compact, was charming.

July 2023

We had a lovely stay and will visit again. The provision of stair gates, cot and high chair were very much appreciated. The only issue we have is that we left our coats behind - we still hope to get them back at some point.

November 2022

Very good experience. Nicola supportive when dishwasher failed (although unable to solve it during our stay!)

June 2022

This house was great, location and amenities within the house.

April 2022

Excellent property in a great location for exploring the New Forest

November 2021

We had a wonderful time, thank you

November 2021

Yes we did enjoy our stay.

October 2021

Yes the house is lovely and in a fantastic location. The Welcome pack was very much appreciated and the house is very well equipped.. I did need the instructions to operate the oven but it seems I am not alone in this.

September 2021

Lovely house and had everything you needed

August 2021

The neighbours in Signal Cottage are very friendly. This was our third stay at Homelands and we found - as usual - that it was an ideal base for the three generations of our family. Altogether the best holiday property we could have chosen.

July 2021

Yes lovely house well equipped great location

July 2021

Excellant week in a very well equipped property. An idiot's guide to the hob/oven for those not used to halogen hob etc would be useful.

June 2021

The property and garden was lovely. The neighbours were also very nice. The location was great for accessing the area and it was a bonus that the children’s park was situated behind the house. The standard of furnishings and care that has gone into this property was excellent. I would certainly come back again.

June 2021

Yes we had a lovely stay and found it a great location to access other areas but enough within walking distance in Brockenhurst

May 2021

A very enjoyable stay in a very comfortable property, fitted out with an eye to detail. One of the best holiday properties we have found. Will have no hesitation in booking again

October 2020

The house was very clean and smart, and warm. Our only comments are as above.

September 2020

Yes we did. It was lovely to be there in Brockenhurst after this awful year

September 2020

We enjoyed our stay very much. A lovely holiday in comfortable accommodation.

September 2020

This was the perfect house for our two young grandsons: stairgate at the top and bottom of the stairs and a travel cot and highchair provided. The garden looked lovely after a makeover just before our stay this year (we stayed at Homelands last year as well). The house is very well equipped - even down to a, sewing kit, which I discovered right at the end of our two-week stay! Unusually for a holiday property Homelands has a very modern television and Blu-ray player. All equipment is of the highest standard. We also appreciated the two very good electric fans. The house is in a very good location, in one direction close to the station and to a couple of good pubs, and in the other direction within walking distance of the village centre. We loved being able to drive to so many great places in a short space of time. We have easily found plenty to do both last year and this year in the course of our two-week stays. Altogether a delightful holiday home.

August 2020

Exceptional stay. Gorgeous property. Brilliant amenities. Gorgeous beds. Very clean. Only thing was that the oven was too clever for us to work out how to use it !! Thank you for a wonderful week.

August 2020

We had a wonderful holiday at Homelands. The property is immaculate throughout, with high quality and tasteful furnishings, fixtures and fittings. The owners clearly want their guests to have a lovely time staying there, and we did. The garden is lovely and a great place to relax. Being close to the playground it is ideal for anyone with young children. Thank you so much. It was ideal for us. We hope to return in the future.

November 2019

There's a warm sense of welcome at Homelands, even though there's no one actually there to welcome you! It's possibly because the owners have thought carefully about the needs of guests, and how they might want to feel when they arrive and while they stay. Whether it's the ample hamper of provisions, the detailed instructions on how to use pretty much everything, or the little extras - like a device for getting your wellies off your feet - the real sense of welcome is unmistakeable. You'd never run out of things to do inside or outside, thanks to plenty of books, games and DVDs, and a helpful volume of places to go and activities to do. We had a lovely week walking and cycling in the New Forest, and enjoyed our stay at Homelands with family immensely. The house is quite close to Brockenhurst rail station, but we got used to the arrival and departure of trains. Homelands is convenient for the village, well resourced with high quality equipment, it's spacious, warm and comfortable. Highly recommended.

November 2019

Yes, the house was wonderful, we had a excellent week

October 2019

We had a lovely stay. Cottage great to come back to after a day out. Cottage well equipped to cater for families as well as couples with all the extras such as dvds and games. Lovely friendly neighbours too.

August 2019

Had a lovely stay.

July 2019

All the appliances required detailed reading of instructions - tiresome. We could have done with fans upstairs in the hot weather - window designs were such that (with no fanlights) rain could come in if you opened them. It was excellent to have two stair gates but we couldn't put these up till halfway through our stay as there was no spanner available to tighten them till we requested one from the excellent cleaner. Luckily our toddler guests were not arriving until the next day. Also, I had specifically asked whether we could have two highchairs rather than the one mentioned. I was told there was just one, so we went to the expense of buying a booster seat to take with us, only to find on arrival that there were in fact two good highchairs at Homelands. I had asked whether there was room for two travel cots and you said there wasn't (very difficult as our two grandsons are aged two and one). We therefore loaded our own travel cot into our car, and lo and behold both our cot and the one provided at the property fitted perfectly in the main bedroom. It's hard enough going on holiday with two toddlers, but when the agency through which you book the cottage doesn't have the correct information it's difficult and frustrating. As it turned out, this was an excellent property for the two toddlers, but you did yourselves no favours by not providing accurate information. Overall it was a lovely property and in such a good location (near the station and within walking distance of shops and pubs etc) that we didn't use the car at all in our second week.

June 2019

We really enjoyed our stay at Homelands. The house was very comfortable and well equiped. Ideally located to visit all the well known locations.

May 2019

Exceptional property

May 2018

Loved everything about the place, the living room was very comfortable as were the beds.

May 2018

Yes, very much. The only downside was the difficult at times access through the village but there is obviously nothing that could be done about that. We would definitely go back there.

April 2018

Apart from that minor point the house is lovely, comfortable and ideally situated for exploring the surrounding towns. There was a lovely welcome pack to greet us and that was much appreciated.

February 2018

Fantastic place, great location and could not ask for anything else. The equipment, games, books etc provided were great. Also really appreciated the welcome basket. Thanks a lot, would come again

December 2017

A beautiful house with some very nice touches. The pictures do not do it the justice it deserves.

November 2017

Excellent property, very well equipped the extra touches, games, kitchen bits and bobs, welcome pack all made it lovely

October 2017

We had a great holiday- the weather was kind to us and the property was fantastic.

September 2017

The house is in a fantastic location, our grandson loved the morning walk to fetch the paper and seeing all the ponies. The property is beautifully decorated and the owners have really thought about everything you could need. Great holiday.

August 2017

The furnishings, equipment and cleanliness were exceptional. For convenience, the location was great, however, we found the train noise intrusive.

June 2017

The house was very clean, tidy and well presented. All sorts of little touches made the property a very comfortable place to stay. The house is very near to the main railway line which had its pluses and minuses. On the plus side it was a very good train service to Bournemouth, Poole, Lynmouth, London etc and the station only a few minutes walk away. On the minus side the trains were quiet noisy when you were in the property but you do eventually get used to it. The only other minus was the noise from the cattle grid for the village hall next door - it made a clonking noise when cars went over it and the hall is used very regularly throughout the day. All that said the property was lovely and we enjoyed our stay.

April 2017

Everything was amazing. We had no hitches, everything worked like clockwork. The property was superb, extremely well situated. We had a marvellous time at the property. Plus the weather was great

March 2017

House was very clean and handy for the village. Well equipped, although the oven was so high tech we never got the hang of it! Husband was impressed with the tv. Downside was the location, next to the railway line with trains running quite late at night, and the village hall on the other side which was busy with cars as there is a day nursery located there.

October 2016

Lovely property in ideal location for cycling and walking without needing to use the car

October 2016

A lovely spacious house in a beautiful area in the New Forest. We'd love to take it lock, stock and barrel to the Midlands, back with us!

October 2016

Lovely property, ideal for trips out in the New Forest. Very welcoming. Thanks for all of your help.

October 2016

A lovely holiday in a very homely house. Bike rides, Peppa Pig (Paultons), Christchurch Quomps, Hengistbury Head, ride along the sea wall. Plenty to do, made the most of the sun!

October 2016

Very sharp, well decorated home. Lots of extras - many thanks. Would definitely recommend A*.

October 2016

Thank you for a lovely stay - your attention to detail in the house makes all the difference. You thought of everything - even equipment for childproofing. We will be back!

September 2016

Fantastic holiday.this house easily surpassed our expectations.the owners went beyond what was required.welcome pack great as arrived late.As there was so much crockery, cutlery utensils we could put dishwasher on once a day and still have set of everything in cupboard.garden lovely.downstairs loo very handy.plenty of room upstairs.the house is less than 10 min walk to village centre.would advise torch for walk back at night as horses leave little packages on pavements which is hard to see in dark.perfectly situated for visiting other villages or coast.would like to thank owners and say would recommend to any of our friends who want to visit new forest. This was our granddaughters first holiday and she saw her first horse at the gate first morning.

September 2016

I would like to says homelands was beyond our expectation.we was impressed that the owner went above what was required.ie number of crockery, utensils, cutlery.also the small things like d.washer tablets,w,up liquid and welcome pack.we will certainly recommend this property to others going to new forest.

July 2016

Welcome pack on arrival was super . The children's play park just behind Homelands was brilliant. The owners of this property had thought about everything we visitors might need.
