With its thatched cottages and quiet primrose lanes, it’s easy to see why the idyllic village of Brockenhurst is considered one of the region’s most desirable places to reside.

What’s particularly lovely about this charming setting is the way it blends effortlessly into its beautiful New Forest surroundings; ponies, donkeys, ducks and deer all often seen wandering freely along the honeysuckle byways.

Visitors to Brockenhurst adore its gentle pace and rustic charm, from its picturesque ‘watersplash’ ford to its olde-worlde inns, this really is one of the most enchanting corners of the New Forest.

The history of Brockenhurst can be traced back as far as the Bronze Age burial mounds that bespeckle the surrounding heathland. What today is the largest village in the New Forest used to amount to four modest Saxon manors which fell between the boundaries of William the Conqueror’s vast hunting ground.

One of the village’s most venerated residents stands rooted in the graveyard of St Nicholas' Church; a mighty yew tree, believed to have cast its shade for a thousand years or more, the oldest tree in the forest. Also keep an eye out for the grave of Harry ‘Brusher’ Mills, the legendary New Forest snake-catcher, hermit, and authority on countryside lore.

The village has upheld its colourful and longstanding tradition of fetes and festivals, playing host to the annual New Forest and Hampshire County Show which runs for three days during July.

A holiday in Brockenhurst places you in the heart of the magnificent New Forest with breathtaking scenery at every turn. One of the most stunning New Forest bridleways, the Rhinefield Ornamental Drive, forges its path through the leafy outskirts of the village on a route lined by glorious rhododendrons, azaleas, giant redwoods and Douglas firs.

One of the best ways to explore Brockenhurst’s gorgeous surroundings is by bike and you’ll find an impressive range of bicycles and accessories for hire at Brockenhurst’s cycle centre, from electric mountain bikes to dog trailers.

The South Taste Trail is a popular excursion local to the village, combining a scenic walk to the charming neighbouring parish of Burley with various stops at tea rooms, delicatessens and traditional country pubs - burning off the calories as you go.

If you’re of the opinion that four legs are better than two, the Brockenhurst Riding Stables offers pony trekking experiences for all abilities, or you might prefer a round of golf at the prestigious Brockenhurst Manor Golf Club.

While away an hour or two with a mooch around Brockenhurst’s traditional high street, where you can stock up on supplies at the local butchers, bakers and greengrocers, as well as the artisan outlets, independent shops, cafes, bistros and takeaways that line this ancient thoroughfare.

Brockenhurst serves as one of the New Forest’s eight train stations and is on the Weymouth to London - Waterloo Mainline. Local bus services run regularly to Lymington and Southampton, while the New Forest open-top bus (June to September) is an exciting way to travel between the area’s towns and villages.

The Filly Inn
(Less than a mile)

(17)

Step in to this 17th century inn and you’ll find a warm welcome. Low ceilings, chunky beams and crooked posts and log burners create a homely olde worlde ambience. Outside is a large and spacious beer garden with glorious views over the forest and Roydon woods nature reserve. Food at The Filly has a fine reputation for its generous portions and fresh local produce, showcasing all the New Forest has to offer. Dogs welcome

Nice location, excellent food and very dog friendly.

October 2023

We had a nice meal at the inn. The service was very good and the food nice. Lovely outside area which would be nice in warmer weather!

August 2023

Brilliant place and great food, staff great too, great potential as it hasn’t been open too long

July 2023

Visited twice during our stay, luckily the weather was so nice we were able to sit outside in the extensive and attractive outdoor seating area which appeared to welcome dogs and their owners. Varied and interesting menu, food well cooked and tasty. Good service.

June 2023

Busy pub and restaurant. Nice atmosphere and good food. Service on a Saturday evening was a little slow, but overall pretty good.

May 2023

A bit of a disappointment here, a very warm welcoming atmosphere but the food was not good value for money and we did not realise that they allowed dogs in the bar/restuarant area until we had been served our meal. We did not go again.

October 2022

Very nice interior and outside seating area, front of house staff very pleasant but kitchen may have been short staffed. Pub was busy from early on with diners and there seemed to be long waits for courses, at one point the chap who appeared to be in charge went into the kitchen to assist (you can see the open kitchen). I has chicken schnitzel which was massive and a very thick chicken breast with fries and green salad which was just iceberg lettuce with Caesar dressing. Tasted good but expected more than lettuce on the side. OH had burger which was very good apparently. No room for dessert.

September 2022

Beautiful pub, good beer. Didn't eat but have been told the food is brilliant.

March 2022

Had 2 really lovely meals here lively setting and cheerful staff

August 2021

July 2021

The Filly Inn is a superb place for a meal, friendly staff, and an amazing outside area to sit in the evening sun with your dinner and a drink.

July 2021

We visited the Filly Inn in September 2019 and spent many a late afternoon in the beer garden. We were disappointed in both January and July 2020 to find it under refurbishment :-(. Hoping it will have reopened again for our next visit.

August 2020

We went several times and had coffee, cakes, scones and a gin flight or two. My only point is we went back at the same time on each visit and personally I would have liked to be acknowledged as a return visitor. I’m not saying it was bad service but this would have been five star treatment

July 2023

Brilliant bar, just a shame it closes at 8.00 p.m.

August 2021

Great enjoyed lunch there.

June 2021

There is a major problem with staying at Homelands, which is going home! This home has been so tastefully and thoughtfully decorated, fitted and kitted out, it has been a privilege to stay here. I mean which other holiday let gives a Dyson fan, Sonos sound system, curved Samsung TV with sound bar etc. But the owners have some exquisite taste. the tiles in the cloakroom and bathrooms, the furniture in the main living room-our home will seem quite second rate when we go back! Lighting is obviously a passion of thee owners - stunning. We enjoyed the landscaped garden and even in October having teat and crumpets in the ante afternoon sun. Train noise absolutely not an issue. The Village hall was closed because of CoVid, so can't common if noise at night would be an issue. Beds amazingly comfy and great rain showers, What's not to like. OK if pushed the oven controls are not intuitive but the instructions work! We'll be back!!

October 2020

Unfortunately this bar was only opened for a couple of hours each day and at strange times and once we had got in from the day out and got ready, the pub was closed. Every pub in the village had a choice of different gins.

September 2021

Lovely village with adequate shops on a very pretty green.

September 2019

Due to my husband breaking his leg we hired a mobility scooter for our holiday. It was a joy to ride along the front at Milford. Wonderful views of The Needles and lots of benches along the way too. Great access from the car parks. Would be great if the short path from Milford to Keyhaven could be the same good surface. We felt the rough stones would be too hard to ride on.

A stony beach with sandy areas as the tide goes out, and a great spot to do some fossil hunting. Plenty of parking in car parks along the cliff top as well as on-road parking.

Highcliffe Beach
Highcliffe Beach
(8 miles)

Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.

To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.

Nice beach with good facilities

April 2023

Beautiful beach, lots of sand for youngsters- definitely been high on our favourites list, for more than 30 years and still is now the 'children' are nearly 30! - well worth the drive from New Forest. The Noisy Lobster is great and now has an 'outdoor upstairs' too. The Beach Cafe, half-way along, is excellent too- used to do very good carrot cake! The connecting beach towards Steamer Point is dog-friendly all year which is a bonus. Walking to the quay end, you can catch the ferry to Hengistbury Head which is beautiful beach too and often quieter (top favourite!) Even this last week (JULY 2021) the 'kids' wanted to crab-fish from Mudeford Quay!!

Accommodation was flawless with lots of little touches that elevate it to 'boutique hotel' standards. The welcome basket, full of goodies was fantastic! Brockenhurst Village is well appointed with supermarkets, cafes, shops and a petrol station is just a few minutes away. Lots of wild roaming ponies... so take care when driving. June 2019

Thank you so much for a lovely stay! We've had a great time. Thank you for the lovely Easter basket, you have a beautiful home. Thanks for sharing it with us.

May 2019

It was an absolute joy staying here. The cottage is perfect in both its layout and furnishings and its position but a few minutes away from the village centre (brookley road) with its amenities. We loved seeing ponies walking freely around the village and an even bigger bonus was that they regularly appeared walking down the road directly outside the cottage! Yvonne, the owner, is delightful and so helpful, not to mention very generous with her provision of a very well stocked "welcome hamper". Already planning a return visit.

December 2018

The accommodation was perfect in every way. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there and we were very impressed with all the lovely Christmas extras.

November 2018

Had a lovely stay. The cottage is really comfortable, warm, cosy, with lots of little extras - fresh flowers, a welcome hamper, wine and milk in the fridge, lovely toiletries, fluffy towels, crisp bedding, etc. Yvonne is a wonderful hostess and made us feel extremely welcome. We would love to return one day soon. Location is great too, an easy 15 min walk into Brokenhurst, although take a torch if you walk in after dark as it is dark and leafy. Everything you need in Brokenhurst too which is a very pretty, friendly village.

November 2018

This was our 3rd visit to Heywood Rest and it never fails to impress. Cannot imagine that there is anywhere nicer than this to spend a holiday in the new forest. The kindness and generosity of the hosts is second to none

This was our second stay here and it was just as good as we remembered. The weather was amazing and Heywood Rest is a lovely ‘home from home’. The welcome basket is outstanding and the quality of the accommodation is faultless. Thank you for sharing your little treasure with us again!

We had a lovely stay at Heywood Rest and the owners were friendly and made themselves available without being intrusive. The extra touches in the house for our little boy were greatly appreciated. A very pleasant stay in an extremely well equipped and taste fully furnished property. There was also an excellent welcome pack awaiting our arrival. Would certainly recommend.

We enjoyed Heywood Rest and the New Forest. New Forest Cottages were particularly easy to deal with and we liked the fact that you don’t charge a booking fee. Thank you

August 2018

Property very well appointed. The hamper was a very nice touch. Having milk, bread, tea and coffee there when we arrived was great, as it saved us rushing out straight away. Great place.

July 2018

One of the nicest self-catering cottages we've ever stayed in. Not only was it spotlessly clean, the owners had provided everything we needed. They also left a special welcome pack with bread, milk, tea and coffee, as well as some luxury food items. I'd highly recommend Heywood Rest and if we're ever back in the New Forest, this will be our first choice for accommodation.

June 2018

property was first class enjoyed our stay

June 2018

Lovely time and meeting Yvonne was an added bonus.

June 2018

We enjoyed our stay very much. Very clean, comfortable and relaxing.

June 2018

Heywood Rest was a lovely home for our week cycling in the New Forest. The property was beautifully presented with lovely touches such as fresh flowers and of course the very welcome 'welcome pack'. Yvonne also made us feel very welcome when she popped in to introduce herself. The facilities in the home were great with decent oven, hob, cooking utensils, pans, dishes etc., something one doesn't always find in a self catering accommodation. We couldn't fault it. As a base for our cycling, Heywood Rest was ideal. The railway station is only a few minutes away and just behind is the cycle shop where we bought a pack of routes taking us around the southern part of the New Forest - recommended. It is also really easy to take bikes onto the train with no pre-booking. There is a large secure lock-up for your bikes at Heywood Rest with place to dry any wet outdoor clothing. We were blessed with fantastic weather during our stay so all in all, we had a perfect week.

April 2018

We had a lovely week staying in Heywood Rest, the host, Yvonne, was extremely helpful and checked in on us to make sure everything was ok. The bike shed is a perfect space for locking up bikes, plenty of room. We would definitely stay again.

March 2018

We enjoyed our time at Heywood Rest and would confidently recommend it as a comfortable place to stay in The New Forest area.

February 2018

We did enjoy our stay at this cottage. The standard of cleanliness was excellent, could not be faulted at all. The bed was very comfortable, and all linens and towels were of a very high quality. There was an extremely generous welcoming pack which was a lovely touch. The owners made us feel welcome whilst also respecting our privacy. The seating in the lounge was very comfortable. Excellent shower over the bath. Lovely molton brown toiletries in the bathroom and kitchen areas. A very central base for exploring the New Forest.

November 2017

This is our 5th stay in the New Forrest and our 4th stay with NFC. We absolutely loved this place, both the location and the general high standard all round. But what made it so very special was the owner Yvonne who visited us on our arrival to welcome us, she also supplied a really high class basket of ‘goodies’ for us and offered any help and advice if required. She also visited us prior to departing and gave us a gift of high class ‘choccies’ which we thought was a fantastic gesture.( just one thing for future reference Yvonne, we are always on a diet!!!) We are well into our 70s now and would love to think that we will visit the New Forest area again. If we do it will def be Heywoods Rest. We had a fabulous stay. Many thanks.xxx

October 2017

We enjoyed our stay very much - the property was an ideal base - spotlessly clean, very comfortable and the welcome pack was a lovely gesture and very much appreciated - we hope to return.

August 2017

The added personnel touches a and welcome basket was a joy after a long drive. Milk in fridge, bread chocolates and marmalade heaven. Beautiful towels and bed linen were of a very high standard very happy and we book for next year . Also wonderful happy lady that welcome us next day with boxes of cereal . Host was lovely and a journey to talk to. ????

August 2017

This was our second stay at Heywood Rest and it was just as lovely as the first time with a great welcome basket and a little something for our two girls. The accommodation is immaculate and has everything you need for your stay. It is an ideal base to explore the new forest and located 10 minutes walk from the village of Brockenhurst with some good pubs and restaurants, our favourite was Britannia Thai. There are some great bike rides from Brockenhurst to Burley, Beaulieu, Bucklers Hard, Lymington, New Milton and Hurst Castle the majority of which are off road and around 20 miles each which is ideal for our 10 and 12 year old girls. The highlight of our daughters holiday was seeing baby donkeys for the first time out in the forest.

July 2017

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in our favourite location in the New Forest. The welcome basket was much appreciated and a thoughtful gesture was the box of chocolates provided by the owners for our long journey home. Would highly recommend this property to friends and family.

July 2017

A beautiful cottage furnished to a very high standard was the perfect place to relax after long days in the saddle whilst on a Parelli course with our horses in the New Forest based in Brockenhurst. The welcome basket was just perfect with lovely treats and the owner Yvonne was so welcoming, we would definitely come back again.

July 2017

Everything was good especially the welcome hamper and the fresh flowers around the house

July 2017

Yes, we enjoyed our stay. Although the road outside the property has a 30 mile an hour speed limit, it was noisy.

June 2017

We had a lovely week staying at Heywood Rest and were delighted with the accommodation. It is finished to a high standard and kept clean and comfortable. Our host Yvonne looked after us,making sure we had what we needed and that we were enjoying our stay while giving us space to enjoy our holiday. June 2017

We greatly enjoyed our stay in this very comfortable, immaculate contemporary house. The generous welcome basket was much appreciated.

April 2017

Great base for cycling the new forest & owners very considerate, respecting our space - considering property directly adjoined theirs. Would have no hesitations booking the same property again - and using your company to do so!

April 2017

We had a really lovely week in this excellent accommodation. The location was perfect and the standard of furnishings was to a very high standard. Our only complaint was the noise from the main road traffic which kept us awake most nights. However all in all a really lovely week.

Thank you for your lovely comments. Heywood is in a perfect location as you say. We are sorry the road disturbed you during your stay. The road is a 30mph road and is quiet during the evenings and overnight. Ponies also frequent this road which is a lovely addition when walking straight from the front entrance of the grounds.

- The Toad Hall Team

April 2017

This was a beautiful cottage equipped with everything you need and beautifully appointed. It is in a perfect location for touring the new forest and beyond and close to all village amenities. The owners provided a very much appreciated welcome pack. This will be the first cottage we look for when considering our next holiday in the new forest.

March 2017

Warm, welcoming, well appointed and comfortable. We appreciated the nice touches for the children. The property proved to be a great base for our family's explorations. A big thank you.

February 2017

A really lovely place to stay. We would definitely go back.

January 2017

November 2016

Lovely comfortable accommodation in a good location for exploring the forest and coast. The light and airy living / dining / kitchen area was great for relaxing in and drinking the welcome pack wine after a day out in the fresh air!

October 2016

Such an enjoyable week at HeywoodRest. The accommodation is excellent, finished to a high standard with lots of little extras to make it feel like home. The welcome basket was unexpected and very gratefully received. The bedrooms are bigger than they look from the pictures with lots of storage, great for us especially with a 10 week old baby! This was the perfect base for us to explore the New Forest and we hope to stay at Heywood Rest again soon :)

October 2016

We have just had a really good week in a delightful property. We found a hamper with lots of goodies waiting for us. The cottage was immaculate could not have wished for better. We needed a good rest and that we achieved. Had a lovely cream tea and a lunch at the Rosie Lee Tea Kitchen, you can book a table 01590 622909, love the blankets and hot water bottles in case you felt you needed warming up (we didn't ) they also did good lunches. Also had a nice meal at the Hare and Hounds.

October 2016

WE'VE ENJOYED AN EXCELLENT WEEK & WOULD CERTAINLY HOLIDAY WITH YOUR COMPANY AGAIN,& WE'D RECOMMEND IT TO FAMILY & FRIENDS.THANKYOU

September 2016

Perfect location, perfect accommodation, perfect hosts makes for a perfect holiday. We are just finishing our week long holiday and we could not have chosen a better place to stay. The cottage is stunning and provides a WOW factor as soon as you walk through the door. Everything has been thoughtfully put together to guarantee your comfort during your stay. Overwhelmed with the kind gestures of fresh flowers and welcome basket. You could not wish for more which gives this cottage our highest recommendation. Thank you so much.

September 2016

Beautiful accommodation, tastefully decorated and perfectly presented including high quality linens and towels. Owner very pleasant and welcoming, and gave us all the space we needed. Wonderful finishing touches including fresh flowers and welcome basket, which were gratefully received, even a basket of spare toiletries in the bathroom, just in case we forgot something. Lovely area, in a beautiful village, lots of ponies, donkeys and even cattle roaming around the village and Heath. I hope to return again soon, and am recommending to friends.

August 2016

Very nice property and owners would definately stay there again

July 2016

One of the nicest holiday cottages I've ever stayed in. Beautifully presented and brand new, with a really hospitable owner. We appreciated all the thoughtful touches - they made us feel very welcome - we didn't want to leave!

July 2016

I loved my week long holiday at Heywood Rest. It was just what I needed, perfect relaxing getaway hideaway in the heart of the forest. Beautiful surroundings which ooze style and comfort with everything you would need (and more!) for a comfortable stay. Great location with easy access to the forest and local shops and attractions. Reading my book on the sun deck with a chilled glass of wine of an evening was bliss. The owners of this property are lovely and so welcoming but also private. Beautiful hamper full of treats upon arrival which was a great touch too. Thank you for a wonderful stay! I can't wait to come back :)

June 2016

Thank so you so much for organising our New Forest trip, we had such a lovely time. The kids really enjoyed themselves. Everything went swimmingly and even the weather held off for us. The cottage was perfect. Great location, really, really nice (hence cries of "why doesn't our house look like this?") and the Judds looked after us with lots of treats too, which was a really nice touch
