With its thatched cottages and quiet primrose lanes, it’s easy to see why the idyllic village of Brockenhurst is considered one of the region’s most desirable places to reside.

What’s particularly lovely about this charming setting is the way it blends effortlessly into its beautiful New Forest surroundings; ponies, donkeys, ducks and deer all often seen wandering freely along the honeysuckle byways.

Visitors to Brockenhurst adore its gentle pace and rustic charm, from its picturesque ‘watersplash’ ford to its olde-worlde inns, this really is one of the most enchanting corners of the New Forest.

The history of Brockenhurst can be traced back as far as the Bronze Age burial mounds that bespeckle the surrounding heathland. What today is the largest village in the New Forest used to amount to four modest Saxon manors which fell between the boundaries of William the Conqueror’s vast hunting ground.

One of the village’s most venerated residents stands rooted in the graveyard of St Nicholas' Church; a mighty yew tree, believed to have cast its shade for a thousand years or more, the oldest tree in the forest. Also keep an eye out for the grave of Harry ‘Brusher’ Mills, the legendary New Forest snake-catcher, hermit, and authority on countryside lore.

The village has upheld its colourful and longstanding tradition of fetes and festivals, playing host to the annual New Forest and Hampshire County Show which runs for three days during July.

A holiday in Brockenhurst places you in the heart of the magnificent New Forest with breathtaking scenery at every turn. One of the most stunning New Forest bridleways, the Rhinefield Ornamental Drive, forges its path through the leafy outskirts of the village on a route lined by glorious rhododendrons, azaleas, giant redwoods and Douglas firs.

One of the best ways to explore Brockenhurst’s gorgeous surroundings is by bike and you’ll find an impressive range of bicycles and accessories for hire at Brockenhurst’s cycle centre, from electric mountain bikes to dog trailers.

The South Taste Trail is a popular excursion local to the village, combining a scenic walk to the charming neighbouring parish of Burley with various stops at tea rooms, delicatessens and traditional country pubs - burning off the calories as you go.

If you’re of the opinion that four legs are better than two, the Brockenhurst Riding Stables offers pony trekking experiences for all abilities, or you might prefer a round of golf at the prestigious Brockenhurst Manor Golf Club.

While away an hour or two with a mooch around Brockenhurst’s traditional high street, where you can stock up on supplies at the local butchers, bakers and greengrocers, as well as the artisan outlets, independent shops, cafes, bistros and takeaways that line this ancient thoroughfare.

Brockenhurst serves as one of the New Forest’s eight train stations and is on the Weymouth to London - Waterloo Mainline. Local bus services run regularly to Lymington and Southampton, while the New Forest open-top bus (June to September) is an exciting way to travel between the area’s towns and villages.

Great food and really good service. We were expecting it to be more expensive than it was. All the dishes we ordered were well cooked, well presented and very tasty!

April 2024

We had an amazing meal here on the first day of our holiday in Brockenhurst. The staff were excellent and the food and wine exceptional.

We shared a Ploughman’s platter here and it was delicious- definitely enough for a lunch for two. Great beer and wine to go with it. Great service and nice surroundings.

April 2024

Had a really good experience at The Huntsman. Staff very pleasant and attentive. Food and drink very good and reasonable value. Wouldn't hesitate to return.

Very enjoyable meal, good service and nice to sit outside in the undercover seating.

June 2023

Great pub, would recommed

May 2023

Lovely food and friendly staff

April 2023

We went to this pub for the Sunday Roast which was a great disappointment and not cheap. The vegetables were virtually inedible, a knife would not cut through them and the green beans had barely seen the water. The waiter knew nothing about the wines, there was no atmosphere and the service not good. When we complained they offered us more vegetables which we declined and eventually they deducted 20% off the main meals.

October 2022

Lovely food served here. Nice friendly staff and they love dogs. Big bonus for us as trying to find good food and dog friendly is not easy

October 2022

Busy pub with really good covered outdoor eating area, appeared that dogs were welcome. Separate outdoor garden area for just drinking. Staff were friendly and helpful. The food was good, I had duck which came very pink so do say if you want it cooked through. Husband had fish and chips which was a plateful!.

September 2022

Great food and very good servy

August 2022

This was a VERY disappointing evening out. Having looked at the menu before we went some of us wanted pizza.......when we arrived the pizza oven was broken so no pizza available. In addition the 2 starters on the kids menu were garlic bread and vegetable sticks - with no pizza oven there was no garlic bread so vegetables the only option. We got put at a table that was wobbly so had to move. The cesar salad was also poor - dry chicken and missing several elements you would normally expect for a cesar salad. All in all an expensive, disappointing evening. We would not return if in the area again.

April 2022

Excellent

September 2021

When we arrived we were told that there were no mussels (apparently the waiter can't remember when they last had them). So we ordered chateaubriand - that was also not available. 'OK I will go with Ribeye but can I please swap the chips for salad'? Response - 'err sorry but the kitchen is quite busy so we can't swap anything...' At this point we wished we hadn't booked...! There are better places!

September 2021

Had a very bad experience at the Huntsman with an evening meal. The food was inedible sent it back..

September 2021

Lovely food and friendly staff

July 2021

Excellent pub. Within minutes walk from cottage. Food and staff good

June 2021

Lots of menu items unavailable (more than half) and quality of the remainder was poor.

June 2021

Very pleasant gastropub

June 2021

Excellent food and location was 100 yards from the house we were staying at.

June 2021

Excellent service. Our waiter was great and there was a lovely atmosphere. Fairly short menu. We felt the presentation of some dishes would have been greatly improved with additional colour by way of garnish/small salad.

May 2021

We had a fabulous Sunday lunch.. The staff were impeccable, nothing too much trouble. The food was fabulous. Very dog friendly. Would highly recommend.

September 2020

We had lunch here but it was a very limited menu-we had the sharing platter that was ok, but the evening food menu had more of a selection. Nice atmosphere.

November 2019

Very pleasant surroundings and good selection of food

September 2019

excellent food and excellent service

July 2019

This is the place for a really tasty pizza. They do a great range of lighter lunches aswell. Good selection of wines and beers

June 2019

We went as a family for Easter Sunday lunch. The food was excellent, fresh and hot. The staff were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble!

April 2019

Very popular so booked beforehand. Good food but quite slow service. Difficult to just go for a drink as for some reason don't have separate lounge

August 2018

This establishment came as a surprise. I took a friend there for lunch and we were much impressed by the interior and enjoyed our meal very much.

April 2018

We ate on one night and went for drinks on another night Was surprisingly busy for a Tuesday evening, but we were still seated at a pleasant, albeit non official dining table We were immediately welcomed and drinks orders taken, in a friendly but efficient manner We were left to choose our food, the children’s menus selected by our two girls (aged 10) were very good and ample, they came with a squash drink and ice cream for pudding I chose the sea bream and mash which was excellent, my partner chos the chicken which was also very good Service throughout was friendly and efficient We returned two days later , just for drinks, I don’t get the feeling that drinkers are their target customers, as the are was much colder and less welcoming than the dining area, I had a real ale which was very pleasant, my partner had a cocktail which was good, the two girls had mock tails, which were nowhere near the standard of our previous visit, no orange in one and didn’t taste as good, girls were a little disappointed This could be down to barman being under training, which to be fair he did explain he was new Overall an excellent venue, we shall be returning

February 2018

Great food and really good service.

February 2018

Great food and family friendly Small area allocated for dogs but often no space available so not dog friendly inside

February 2018

Only about 30 metres walk... Fabulous food great atmosphere. But book to make sure of a table as its very popular on Thurs - Sunday evenings

December 2017

Very good standard of food and pleasant, helpful staff. Thoroughly recommend!

December 2017

It was our first visit to this venue since the name change. The menu appeared a little more upmarket, unfortunately the service wasn't. They took our credit card when taking our order, but when it came to paying our bill we were told they were busy and we had to find the waiter who took it. In all it took something like 30 minutes trying to pay our bill, not the best way to finish an evening with 3 small children wanting their beds.

August 2017

we ate twice at The Huntsman. First time in garden as we had our dog. food was lovely but service very slow. second time we ate inside with all the family. Meal was superb and service excellent and waiter was very attentive

August 2017

Nice restaurant, very nicely decorated, good ambiance and service. We went for a dinner with our kids (3). The food kids menu, was perfect, my wife and daughter order the trout and duck both very good dishes. I ordered the rib eye, the menu says it has 35 days of maturing. The quality was bad, I would even doubt it was steak it almost looked like processed meet. My recommendation stick to the other dishes on the menu and avoid the steak selection. The rest of the experience was very positive.

Absolutely delicious Thai food. Cannot wait to return

February 2022

Britannia Thai is a fantastic little restaurant within brockenhurst village. They offer both dine in and takeaway lunch and dinner services. The welcome on entering the restaurant is warm and genuine. The standard of food they provide is excellent and portion sizing is very generous. We can highly recommend the chicken satay and chicken Pad Thai noodles. Overall they provide fantastic value food. Definitely not to be missed when in brockenhurst.

We went several times and had coffee, cakes, scones and a gin flight or two. My only point is we went back at the same time on each visit and personally I would have liked to be acknowledged as a return visitor. I’m not saying it was bad service but this would have been five star treatment

July 2023

Brilliant bar, just a shame it closes at 8.00 p.m.

August 2021

Great enjoyed lunch there.

June 2021

There is a major problem with staying at Homelands, which is going home! This home has been so tastefully and thoughtfully decorated, fitted and kitted out, it has been a privilege to stay here. I mean which other holiday let gives a Dyson fan, Sonos sound system, curved Samsung TV with sound bar etc. But the owners have some exquisite taste. the tiles in the cloakroom and bathrooms, the furniture in the main living room-our home will seem quite second rate when we go back! Lighting is obviously a passion of thee owners - stunning. We enjoyed the landscaped garden and even in October having teat and crumpets in the ante afternoon sun. Train noise absolutely not an issue. The Village hall was closed because of CoVid, so can't common if noise at night would be an issue. Beds amazingly comfy and great rain showers, What's not to like. OK if pushed the oven controls are not intuitive but the instructions work! We'll be back!!

October 2020

Unfortunately this bar was only opened for a couple of hours each day and at strange times and once we had got in from the day out and got ready, the pub was closed. Every pub in the village had a choice of different gins.

September 2019

Due to my husband breaking his leg we hired a mobility scooter for our holiday. It was a joy to ride along the front at Milford. Wonderful views of The Needles and lots of benches along the way too. Great access from the car parks. Would be great if the short path from Milford to Keyhaven could be the same good surface. We felt the rough stones would be too hard to ride on.

A stony beach with sandy areas as the tide goes out, and a great spot to do some fossil hunting. The cliffs are subject to considerable coastal erosion and at times parts of the beach can be cordoned off. The Beachcomber Café on the cliff top is one of the most popular cafés in the region. Plenty of parking in car parks along the cliff top as well as on-road parking.

Highcliffe Beach
Highcliffe Beach
(8 miles)

Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.

To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.

A family friendly beach close to Mudeford and Christchurch Harbour with plenty to do for all.  For those with disabilities or small children there is a beach level carpark, and to keep everyone safe there is a designated bathing area and a seperate area allocated for watersports, all overseen by lifeguards in the summer months.  This pretty sand and shingle beach is backed by trees and countryside and if you fancy some fresh local seafood or simply a coffee, ice cream or a cold drink, the beach is home to the excellent Noisy Lobster, serving breakfast, lunch and supper all year round.

Nice beach with good facilities

April 2023

Beautiful beach, lots of sand for youngsters- definitely been high on our favourites list, for more than 30 years and still is now the 'children' are nearly 30! - well worth the drive from New Forest. The Noisy Lobster is great and now has an 'outdoor upstairs' too. The Beach Cafe, half-way along, is excellent too- used to do very good carrot cake! The connecting beach towards Steamer Point is dog-friendly all year which is a bonus. Walking to the quay end, you can catch the ferry to Hengistbury Head which is beautiful beach too and often quieter (top favourite!) Even this last week (JULY 2021) the 'kids' wanted to crab-fish from Mudeford Quay!!

Chamberlain’s Cottage is beautifully situated and has everything needed for your stay. It is within walking distance to all the local shops and restaurants/ pubs and you can walk into the forest without getting the car out. We walked miles in the forest and caught the bus back from Lyndhurst- the bus stop is very close to the cottage. An ideal place to stay for a peaceful, relaxing break.

Beautiful stay!

February 2024

Had an enjoyable stay and cottage was very comfortable. Disappointing that a plumbing issue on the first day rendered the bath & shower in the main bathroom unusable for the duration of our stay. We had particularly picked a cottage with 2 bathrooms but were reduced to using just the ensuite. Having said that the response to the issue was very prompt and it couldn't be helped that the part to fix the issue was a supplier delay and we were kept informed. Overall the cottage was very good.

October 2023

We had a tap in the one of the bathrooms which we could not turn off resulting in it running, wasting hot water. We contacted the emergency phone number and a plumber turned up within the hour. Excellent service. The property was very comfortable and the location peaceful.

September 2023

We had a lovely stay, thanks. Perfect location and wonderful garden, excellent for a toddler. She also loved just being taken outside the gate to see horses and cows roaming free. The village has several good family pubs as well as more upmarket restaurants and shops. A very good centre for a holiday. I had to phone the office a couple of times and your staff were always lovely and helpful
