Hythe’s connection with the sea stretches back over the centuries and is still important today. The seafront has been developed to include a luxury marina, where the rich and famous regularly moor their yachts. The pier railway and ferry service across to Southampton transports visitors across Southampton Water at half-hourly intervals throughout the day, and is the oldest working pier train in the world.

During World War II, Hythe was used as a port for the “little ships” of the Royal Navy, the Motor Torpedo Boats and the RAF Air/Sea Rescue Boats, and played a key role in the defence of the South of England coastline. In 1960, The Hovercraft Development Company moved to Hythe, giving the town a major economic boost.

Head in the opposite direction away from Southampton Water and you are immediately surrounded by the beauty of the New Forest, with horseback riding, mountain biking and walking for the more adventurous. In the town itself there are events taking place all year round. Every year in August, the marina hosts the R.N.L.I. Great Waterside Raft Race, where teams race rafts in the Solent Estuary to raise money for the R.N.L.I.
