West Wellow and its twin village East Wellow are set in quintessential English countryside. Don your walking shoes and explore the tracks and paths with rucksacks brimming with goodies for a picnic under lofty trees and the sound of birdsong. West Wellow’s surrounding woodland is a great place to spot wildlife – look out for otters, herons, kingfishers, foxes, badgers and deer.

Calling all Mums and Dad’s who want happy children! A holiday in West Wellow wouldn’t be complete without a trip to nearby Paultons Park, home of Peppa Pig World and voted Best Children’s Theme Park in the UK by TripAdvisor.

For lunch or dinner, The Red Rover pub is in the village and serves a grill style menu, while two very popular pubs, The Shoe Inn and The Rockingham Arms, are both within two miles of West Wellow and serve delicious food in hearty portions. For those with a sweet tooth, head to Carlo’s Ice Cream Parlour and Tea Rooms for delicious homemade Italian ice creams, cream teas and freshly baked cakes. The village also has a convenience store, post office and butchers to stock up on every day supplies, with supermarkets in nearby Totton.

Whilst in the area, a trip to the cathedral cities of Salisbury and Winchester are great days out. We’d also recommend you check for open days and family activities at Minstead Study Centre, and the fabulous Calshot Activity Centre for lots of outdoor activity fun and memory making.

October 2023

Superb Sunday Lunch with family and 1 year old. Well appointed, and attentive staff

September 2021

Great venue for food and very polite staff

June 2021

We had an amazing meal at the Rockingham Arms. The staff were so lovely and helpful - we had booked a table hoping our toddler would be fast asleep in her pushchair however she was wide awake! The staff were amazing and actually found a space for us away from everyone else where we could try and get her to sleep and also enjoy our meal. Couldn’t recommend this place highly enough.

September 2019

Wonderful service, friendly to children, impeccably decorated and maintained, and delicious food. Easily our best meal in the forest.

Delicious food. All made very welcome, from OAPs to baby and in between!

April 2024

We went for dinner here whilst staying at Westwinds Annexe (from which it is walking distance). We enjoyed it, there was a lot of choice and a good atmosphere and we would gladly return. Pub has a great outlook onto the village green with the New Forest ponies and donkeys roaming about.

April 2024

We only went with the family for a drink but found the staff very helpful. As we had children with us we sat in the garden which probably could have been a bit nicer but did not spoil anything.

April 2022

A lovely country pub serving excellent food and good wine with great service, in a beautiful location with lots of forest walks right on the doorstep.

November 2021

We had a really lovely evening at The Lamb. The staff went out of their way to be friendly and helpful while maintaining Covid safety. The food arrived nicely presented and was delicious. There was plenty of space around our table, we didn't feel hemmed in and our dog could fit comfortably under the table, yet we felt part of a happy group of diners. Thank you.

Absolutely fabulous theme park - so clean, well laid out, plenty of staff, all helpful and friendly, great rides for the little ones, plenty of places to eat and drink and beautiful gardens. We will definitely visit again when next in the New Forest.

April 2022

Good entertainment for kids, so much to see and do, a good day out

August 2021

Our 2 year old absolutely loved Peppa world. I have to say I wasn’t sure what to expect but we really enjoyed it too! Plenty of rides for the little ones, well laid out with affordable eating options and plenty of toilets and baby change facilities too. Can imagine it gets very busy in the school holidays but we were slightly out of season so it was great!

September 2019

Our two year old thought it was the best thing ever, and is still exciting about visiting Peppa Pig's house and meeting his heroes. We thought that the rest of the park was more exciting (and shorter queues.) Many of the rides closed much later than the advertised closing time - so by staying later we got more time in the park and also avoided the worst of the queues to get out.

February 2024

We enjoyed Furzey gardens whilst staying at house for Christmas. The tinsel fairy tree trail was great , did it 3 times just to see if any fairies were at home. We liked the sculptures and quirky art amongst the garden. We will come again in may to see rhododendron in full bloom.

January 2024

Wonderful for all ages. The autumn colours were marvellous in the late October sunshine and the entertainment for young children was superb.

Barton on Sea
(18 miles)

(2)

A stony beach with sandy areas as the tide goes out, and a great spot to do some fossil hunting. The cliffs are subject to considerable coastal erosion and at times parts of the beach can be cordoned off. The Beachcomber Café on the cliff top is one of the most popular cafés in the region. Plenty of parking in car parks along the cliff top as well as on-road parking.

A pleasant walk along the cliff top and along the beach. There was less cliff than last time we went to the New Forest.

June 2023

Super walk, nice and easy and great place for a meal or tea and cake by the car park.

April 2019

Highcliffe Beach
Highcliffe Beach
(18 miles)

Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.

To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.

A lovely place to stay. So much to see and do locally and within easy reach.

August 2023

Milford on Sea is a very quintessential English village which has retained all its charm. The seafront is a delight to stroll along and The Needles Eye Cafe produces lovely coffee and lunches which is well worth a visit. A walk around Sturt Pond is also enjoyable and through to the village.

July 2022

A proper gem. Great location for the new forest. The village is great and was only a short walk from our house. Not too busy or full of holiday makers. We will be back.

October 2021

One of my favourite places

July 2021

Good place to go if you have a buggy or wheelchair as there is a tarmac path along the top of the cliffs with great views of the Needles, plenty of parking and a kiosk serving refreshments.

September 2020

Lovely village with adequate shops on a very pretty green.

September 2019

Due to my husband breaking his leg we hired a mobility scooter for our holiday. It was a joy to ride along the front at Milford. Wonderful views of The Needles and lots of benches along the way too. Great access from the car parks. Would be great if the short path from Milford to Keyhaven could be the same good surface. We felt the rough stones would be too hard to ride on.

June 2019

Love Milford on Sea so old fashioned hasn't changed much since I use go as a child in the 1960/70s

April 2019

great walking area, small cafe-the needles, children climbing play park- crashing waves over stoned beach

February 2024

This is our 2nd visit to Pinns farm, we loved it! Even better they had new mattresses which were super comfortable. Cosy, comfortable and perfect location. We will be back!

November 2023

We loved the bungalow and grounds. The narrow access roads were tricky to negotiate as we arrived the day after Storm Ciarán, and some were closed because of flooding, but in drier weather they wouldn’t have been a problem.

October 2023

We loved Pinns Farm, it’s rustic charm was magical. Seeing deer in the garden was a real bonus! A nice walk to a farm coffee shop for breakfast (about 1.5 miles). The local pubs around served delicious food. It’s very convenient to get to the centre of the new forest (15min drive). Having the open fire on in the evening, cosying up on the sofa was perfect. The tv was very small but this didn’t seem to matter once you got used to it. We cooked a few nights at the property, it had all the equipment you need. Was lovely to arrive to yummy biscuits and milk for a cuppa. We will be back!

September 2023

Loved it - didn’t want to leave!

August 2023

The house itself and the location are fantastic. Cleanliness was all right, but I don’t know how continuously the house is used because the kitchen equipment evoked the impression of neglect, e.g. the kettle should be descaled more often, the dishes and cutlery were a bit sticky. But all in all the location is probably unbeatable.

March 2023

We had a lovely Christmas here with the log fires and beautiful surroundings. We filled the bird feeders and saw woodpeckers and robins. Our dog loved running around the garden and going crazy. Perfect house to spend a warm Christmas away from the crowds.

March 2023

Thank you for a lovely stay. We have loved our restful and peaceful time listening and feeding the birds and playing in the garden. Romsey is lovely little village to explore and the beautiful weather meant we could even enjoy a trip to Bournemouth beach. We would love to come back and see the garden in full bloom.

July 2022

Enjoy it??? We loved it. Planning to book for next year in September as our granddaughters wedding.

July 2022

The location and grounds the bungalow provided was outstanding and we all had a fabulous time dogs included. The bungalow is full of charm and we’re hoping to book again for 2023. Hopefully new garden furniture will be provided.

June 2022

2nd stay. Very tranquil and relaxing. Good area for walking the dog.

June 2022

We loved the cottage, cant wait to go again

April 2022

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay, wouldn’t change a thing.

December 2021

Loved the location and we felt very comfortable in the bungalow and the best way to sum it up - have already booked for June 2022.

December 2021

Possible warning for the ford at the bottom of the road. We had a 4x4 so no problem for us.

July 2021

We honestly couldn't have asked for more!

July 2021

Our 3rd visit. We love the peace and quiet

June 2021

All good ref the stay garden great even had a deer visit got some good photos from approx 50 metres away. The Rockingham Arms and the Hatchet great pubs for food!

June 2021

Yes, we did. The dining room and kitchen, the outside space and location more than make up for some of the details listed above. But it wouldnt take much to make this cottage into a real luxury stay,

August 2020

Beautifully located cottage, lots of land for kids to play.

August 2020

We had a wonderful time. It is such a beautiful little cottage and the gardens are amazing, the wild meadow blooms and the bird life is incredible. We were so happy watching them all come to feed and really excited to see our first Nuthatch and also bats and woodpeckers. To be honest we spent almost all our time in the kitchen area watching the birds. The cottage was well laid out, clean, really well equipped, we wanted for nothing and the broadband signal was excellent when we needed it. It’s well situated to get to the coast or Stonehenge and some nice gentle walks nearby such as to Florence Nightingale’s grace. All told we really loved our stay. For a last minute pick it turned out to be one of our favourite holidays and somewhere we’d love to come back and stay longer next time now we know how lovely it is.

July 2020

The bungalow is just fine, it's old but charming and is in a wonderful setting to relax and unwind, the grounds are full of wildlife and birdsong, we have already booked to return next year.

October 2019

Yes our stay was excellent

August 2019

We had an amazing holiday. Clean and well equipped. We struggled to get washing dry. And the beds were a bit hard. I've stayed here numerous times, and will keep coming back. I love the cottage Thank you for having us

January 2019

A surprisingly spacious cottage (especially the kitchen/diner) with lots of equipment. Better than we expected. Quiet location with lots of birds in the large garden, including owls at night.

June 2018

yes would like to return

September 2017

Yes we had a lovely break. A real away from it all feel which is what we wanted, and we did very well with the weather. Given how late we booked we feel we did very well and would definitely consider coming again.

July 2017

We had a lovely stay at Pinns Farm Bungalow. It exceeded our expectations. The bungalow was lovely and clean and had everything we needed, including a lovely thoughtful welcome pack of goodies to make ourselves a cup of tea before needing to rush off to do the food shop on arrival. We loved the situation, for both the immediate enjoyment of the grounds themselves and it's location for exploring the surrounding area. Perfect for a trip to Peppa Pig World with our two young daughters, and numerous other attractions like Longdown Farm and plenty of lovely towns and villages throughout the New Forest. We had a lovely time. Thank you.

June 2017

The cottage is off the beaten track and in a very quiet location offering a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. It is close to the New Forest and offered a good location for exploring the forest and nearby towns. With some more love and care this cottage could offer a perfect romantic retreat.

Thank you for your comments. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay at Pinns Farm Bungalow, it truly is in a lovely remote location. The owners will be visiting the property shortly to ensure the property remains in good condition for the busy summer season. We hope you will visit the New Forest again soon.

- The Toad Hall Team
