On the western banks of the Lymington River, having wended its way through the sun-dappled glades of the New Forest to find the Solent, lies the beautiful Georgian market town of Lymington.

Lymington has been an illustrious seaport for centuries and was once well-known for its shipbuilding and salt harvesting enterprises. Today, its three sparkling marinas offer berths to the many residents and visiting yachts seen docked in its harbour, tell-tale signs of the town’s vibrant sailing community. In fact, it was the gleaming Solent waters that were the training ground for local hero and five-time Olympian Sir Ben Ainslie; a letter box painted gold in celebration of his achievements can be found at the bottom of the town’s bustling high street.

Lymington’s ancient origins can be traced back to the dyke and mounds that once formed the outer defences of its Iron Age fort, known locally as Buckland Rings. When the Jutes prevailed from the Isle of Wight in the 6th century they founded a settlement called Limentun, and by the time of the Norman conquests this once sparsely populated enclave had grown into a flourishing port.

Today, the characterful, cobbled streets of Lymington are lined with artisan shops, galleries and boutiques, whilst the town’s weekly market is filled with stalls selling everything from garden plants to home-baked cakes. Lymington also plays host to a fleet of elegant restaurants, cosy tea rooms, charming cafés and stylish bistros. Lanes of Lymington, with its sleek balconies and intimate alcoves, has all the pizazz of a top London outlet, while the award-winning Elderflower on Quay Street boasts one of the finest a la carte menus in the region.

Holidays in Lymington can be easily filled with a variety of family-friendly activities, from sunset cruises and stand up paddle boarding to harbourside strolls and coastal rambles. During the sunnier months, the town hosts a number of gala events including the ever-popular Lymington Seafood Festival, a lively July carnival, regattas and regular sailing jamborees. Listen to some summer jazz in the bandstand gardens before a dip in the town’s historic sea water baths, renowned for its rejuvenating mud minerals, and if you’re a wildlife enthusiast, a short walk to the marshes and lagoons of Keyhaven Nature Reserve is a must.

Lymington has its own railway station with mainline links from London Waterloo to nearby Brockenhurst. There are also regular bus services with links to the coastal resort of Bournemouth and the maritime city of Southampton, plus, you’ll also be able to pick up the New Forest tour bus and enjoy an open-top safari. If you’ve had your fill of landlubbing, a quick channel hop on the car and passenger ferry to the Isle of Wight might be just the ticket.

Nice pub, good for watching sport. Only issue is the eye watering drinks prices.

February 2024

We didn't like this pub. We went for a meal but they insisted they take a credit card swipe before opening a tab. This gave us the impression that we were untrustworthy. I have never been asked for a credit card swipe at a pub ever before. Also, I was served a short measure of beer. A long way short of a full pint. When I politely asked for it to be topped up this was done very begrudgingly. Overall it was a bad experience and I could not recommend it.

September 2023

Bit disappointing. The "lovely beer garden" is now covered by a large smokers shelter, with nowhere else to sit outside on a warm summer's evening

June 2023

Good food and friendly staff.

June 2023

A great location with a super ambience. Great fish and chip super.

December 2022

Very welcoming and really tasty food. We loved the light bites as we didn’t always want a big meal in the evening.

June 2022

Strolled round the corner from Talbot Cottage to sample the ale at my first Lymington pub. It was mid afternoon in October so the pub was quiet but very spacious. Immediately outside was a heated area - very handy for my smoker husband!! A large marquee with gorgeous greenery provided plenty of seating. Very friendly barman. Passed the Bosun’s Chair in the evening & it was heaving! A popular place indeed!

January 2022

We had a very enjoyable meal at the Bosun's Chair (recommended by the property). The beer is excellent and the food was extremely good quality 'pub grub'.

July 2021

Great food and service. Best burger we have had in a long time. Bonus as outside heaters.

May 2021

Very good ambiance and staff, definitely worth a visit.

September 2020

Refurbishment very well done. An excellent pub in every way. - even though Lymington prices are way above those in Lincolnshire!

March 2020

This is a local’s pub with a good atmosphere. The food was pleasant but not spectacular.

June 2019

Pleasant welcoming pub with good food and dog friendly.

April 2023

Whenever we are in Lymington this is our favourite place to go for breakfast and lunch! They have so many options and everything we've tried has been lovely.

January 2023

Very friendly and accommodating staff. Good quality food at reasonable prices. Full English breakfast is a must; even though scrambled eggs were not on the menu, they were quite happy to do them.

May 2022

Lovely coffee and especially cake. Staff were cheery and welcoming. We also had a great breakfast here on our last morning.

November 2021

The Angel & Blue Pig
(Less than a mile)

(13)

A stylish and elegant gastro pub on the high street, whose origins date back to the 13th century. Lots of wooden beams, bare brick walls, large fire place and pretty soft furnishings - there’s also outside seating. The Angel and Blue Pig specialize in steaks, which receive great reviews. The main menu changes each month and is supplemented by daily specials. All the dishes are creative, varied and beautifully presented. A delightful spot for a drink or bite to eat.

September 2023

Fabulous location in the heart of the shopping area, nice and quiet on the day we visited. Lovely comfortable decor and seating with plenty of space.

June 2023

Great steak and good service

July 2021

A decent pub serving decent food at a decent price. I very much enjoyed the meal, shame about the flat beer.

July 2021

Nice pub in the centre of Lymington, food was lovely, shame there wasn't any cask ales - we visited this pub for lunch on the basis of the Good Pub Guide.

May 2021

Good food and service

September 2020

Friendly staff, good food, comfortable surroundings

August 2020

Very disappointing. So much so that I submitted a complaint to customer service via email and the response was very unsatisfactory too! My advice would be to avoid.

November 2019

Visited this pub whilst on holiday. My wife and I had the intention of eating there, although we had not booked. We ordered 2 drinks (beer) which I could not drink at all. I took them back to the bar with the intention of asking them to be replaced. I waited for 15 minutes. During this time the 2 bar staff who were on duty walked past several times whilst serving other customers. Neither showed any interest in finding out what my problem was or that they knew I was there. In the end I left the beer on the bar and walked out. I have visited Lymington several times in the past and hope to holiday there again in the future, but I will never go into this place again.

May 2019

Very disappointing and long delay in seating us on arrival despite having a reservation.

January 2018

We loved this pub! We went with the kids for a quick drink around lunchtime and then came back in the evening without the kids. Great atmosphere, well furnished, and great drinks on offer. The menu looked fantastic too, however, we didn't get to sample it! We'll definitely go again if we return to Lymington.

July 2017

Perfect for lunch. They have a £6 lunchtime menu which offers excellent value for money. I had the wild mushroom linguine. Delicious and good sized portion. My husband had the burger which comes with fries and homemade ketchup. Staff are friendly and chatty too which is nice.

Visited on a damp day on my own, interesting museum and a good Art Gallery within the same building. Very nice and well staffed cafe area with a good selection of tasty food and nice coffee.

October 2023

Had a nice meal here upon arrival in Lymington. Very pleasant helpful staff. Also, a very nice gift shop, and Tourist Information centre.

October 2023

Brilliant Museum and the cafe is excellent

September 2023

Excellent museum that tells the story of the town and local area and also has space for changing exhibitions. Also acts as the local visitor info centre and has plenty of information about things to do in the area. There's also a nice gift shop and super little cafe.

September 2023

Great little museum. Very informative about the history of the area and even our teenagers enjoyed the dinosaur exhibit.

August 2022

A bit of a hidden gem really, very good and informative displays in a well laid out and spacious environment, we particularly liked the community involvement with a group of local children very actively enjoying the surroundings, the coffee shop and the engaging and helpful staff. If anything the museum could sell itself to the public better - we nearly didn't go in as there was little to explain what was inside other than the art galleries

May 2022

Wonderful art exhibition and everyone was very helpful. Great cafe and recommend the coffee and biscuits!

October 2021

Well worth spending a morning learning about the history of Lymington and the wider New Forest area. There is always an interesting pop up exhibition too. The cafe is great and serves lovely home made food.

Wonderful 1833 pool - I preferred the 20 degree temperature to the stifling 30 degree in the Leisure Centre. Very friendly staff. The most spacious pool I've swum in anywhere. Swam here most days £4.00 for two hours a bargain.

September 2023

We swam here pretty much every morning of our stay that it was open. Good value for general swimming - the more expensive inflatables course looked like great fun but we didn't try it ourselves. Such a good way to start the day, and a great facility for the town as there's no beach. Would have been even better if it opened earlier or later in the day.

September 2023

We spent an afternoon there and the children enjoyed the inflatables. The weather was good. Changing rooms not clearly signed though.

August 2023

Brilliant place loved it although water was bracing

August 2023

This is a must for everyone, especially for teenagers who love a challenge. We left our two on the assault course for 2 hours whilst we wandered the salt marshes on the Solent Way nearby. The ice cream kiosk next to the baths is value for money too and sells the local ice cream with generous portions.

August 2022

Planning to go there as looked good with all the fun equipment you could hire but found the cost for a family of six (two adults, four children) too expensive so did not go after all.

August 2021

We had a great time on the inflatables one morning. My son loved it! Friendly staff and good to hire wet suits.

August 2021

Did paddle boarding here, a great safe place to give it a try.

Great activity, kids loved it! Harder than it looks.

March 2024

A lovely place to stay. So much to see and do locally and within easy reach.

August 2023

Milford on Sea is a very quintessential English village which has retained all its charm. The seafront is a delight to stroll along and The Needles Eye Cafe produces lovely coffee and lunches which is well worth a visit. A walk around Sturt Pond is also enjoyable and through to the village.

June 2023

Lovely quiet location for a beach walk. Great for watching the sea and waves without the crowds.

June 2023

Brilliant beach.

September 2022

Beautiful beach with views to The Isle of Wight. Good for swimming, picnics and walking. Very good car parking and public toilets. Lots of good places to eat and drink either next to the beach or in the village, a short walk away

July 2022

A proper gem. Great location for the new forest. The village is great and was only a short walk from our house. Not too busy or full of holiday makers. We will be back.

October 2021

One of my favourite places

July 2021

Good place to go if you have a buggy or wheelchair as there is a tarmac path along the top of the cliffs with great views of the Needles, plenty of parking and a kiosk serving refreshments.

September 2020

Lovely village with adequate shops on a very pretty green.

September 2019

Due to my husband breaking his leg we hired a mobility scooter for our holiday. It was a joy to ride along the front at Milford. Wonderful views of The Needles and lots of benches along the way too. Great access from the car parks. Would be great if the short path from Milford to Keyhaven could be the same good surface. We felt the rough stones would be too hard to ride on.

June 2019

Love Milford on Sea so old fashioned hasn't changed much since I use go as a child in the 1960/70s

April 2019

great walking area, small cafe-the needles, children climbing play park- crashing waves over stoned beach

Barton on Sea
(6 miles)

(2)

A stony beach with sandy areas as the tide goes out, and a great spot to do some fossil hunting. The cliffs are subject to considerable coastal erosion and at times parts of the beach can be cordoned off. The Beachcomber Café on the cliff top is one of the most popular cafés in the region. Plenty of parking in car parks along the cliff top as well as on-road parking.

Highcliffe Beach
Highcliffe Beach
(7 miles)

Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.

To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.

October 2023

Enjoyed our stay because of location but there are definitely improvements to be made as listed above

August 2023

This is a comfortable modern house that is an easy short walk from the many pubs, cafes, and shops in Lymington. My aim was to park the car and then walk or use the local train for the rest of the week, and this cottage worked perfectly for that. I had to report a minor maintenance problem to the owner, who was very helpful and got it sorted out promptly. My sister joined me for part of my stay and we found the cottage very comfortable for two. The kitchen is petite but well-equipped, and we took turns cooking. The cottage does sleep 6. There are two comfortable arm chairs - ideal for me and my sister - and a large slouchy sofa that would seat 3 people. If you had 6 adults, I think one person would need to use an upright dining chair in wet weather. The deck has a nice table and 6 chairs for fine weather. But maybe you'd be out at the pub anyway. I particularly appreciated the large dining table and comfortable dining chairs as I wanted to do a lot of work on some quilts and this was ideal. The bedrooms are pleasantly furnished with comfortable beds (a double on the top floor, two twins on the middle floor) and good bathrooms (convenient loo on the ground floor, large shared bathroom with bath and shower on the middle floor, en-suite shower room on the top floor). Would definitely recommend and hope to book again.

June 2023

Yes we did.

April 2023

A very nice, well equipped and furnished house. The location as great for walking into Lymington centre. Shame there is not space for 2 cars during the daytime as the roadside parking was restricted but the car park was quite close and relatively cheap at £5 for over 4 hours. Would definitely use again and recommend to others.

April 2023

Yes we enjoyed our stay, surprisingly quiet for a central location.

November 2022

Wonderful stay and we want to return next year

September 2022

Fabulous place to stay

August 2022

Thoroughly enjoyed stay. Very impressed with accommodation. Assuming all other accommodation is of the same standard we will definitely be staying with you again

March 2022

October 2021

August 2021

Yes, well equipped property, good central location

July 2021

Yes we did.

October 2020

We were a group of walkers and it was perfect for us. The location was very convenient. We would certainly recommend it.

February 2020

Perfect place for easy access to Lymington. The weather wasn't our friend but we enjoyed St Barbe gallery, a train trip to Southampton to the cultural quarter and wandering around Keyhaven/Milton on Sea.

June 2019

Nice clean and adequate house for a comfy stay

October 2018

We enjoyed our stay We would recommend The Borough Arms Avenue Road Small friendly local pub with good beer and very good reasonably priced home cooked food Only five minutes walk from the house

April 2018

We had a lovely stay at Corcaigh. The location was ideal for walking into Lymington, and for adventuring in the New Forest. The house was suitable for 6 guests (2 adults and 4 children) and comfortable for our short break.

August 2017

The bedrooms and bathrooms were very clean and comfortable. However, we needed to clean the fridge on arrival as the shelves were dirty with food stuffs. The kettle and the kitchen blind needed a good clean and there were cobwebs hanging from the kitchen ceiling. Overall we had a lovely stay and would choose to stay here again as it is in an excellent location for the walking to the beautiful High Street and Marina.

June 2017

Lovely stay, lovely cottage, great location for us to visit all the places we wanted to go.

June 2017

We had a lovely stay and found it very convenient for train station, ferry port, town and harbour. The bedrooms were comfortable and well-decorated. Constant hot water was a bonus. All main appliances worked well and the kitchen was well-equipped except drying element of washing machine. Maybe a better airer to dry washing would be useful. Wine and biscuits on arrival appreciated. Enjoyed the supply of DVDs and information on the local area.

October 2016

Corcaigh is in a excellent position the shops, the harbour, are a short walk away, and a few minutes of driving and you're in the new forest or on a beach.

August 2016

We enjoyed our stay at Corcaigh. Grandchildren 11 and 6 had plenty to do and near bus, train and quay. Very well equipped house and would stay there again.

June 2016

We have already booked Corcaigh for another week later in the year and are looking forward to going back.

September 2015

It was a good location and the accommodation was excellent.

March 2015

Corcaigh is clean, comfortable & well equipped with all that is required for a totally relaxing stress free holiday. Corcaigh is within easy walking distance to the town centre with it's many shops & eating establishments & is also within easy walking distance to the railway station to take the frequent ferry to & from the IOW. Corcaigh is also a good base to explore the New Forest & the surrounding area.

November 2014

The property was bright, clean, airy and very comfortable. It was also equipped to a high standard making it almost a home from home. A great base for exploring the New Forest and with easy access into Lymington.
