On the western banks of the Lymington River, having wended its way through the sun-dappled glades of the New Forest to find the Solent, lies the beautiful Georgian market town of Lymington.

Lymington has been an illustrious seaport for centuries and was once well-known for its shipbuilding and salt harvesting enterprises. Today, its three sparkling marinas offer berths to the many residents and visiting yachts seen docked in its harbour, tell-tale signs of the town’s vibrant sailing community. In fact, it was the gleaming Solent waters that were the training ground for local hero and five-time Olympian Sir Ben Ainslie; a letter box painted gold in celebration of his achievements can be found at the bottom of the town’s bustling high street.

Lymington’s ancient origins can be traced back to the dyke and mounds that once formed the outer defences of its Iron Age fort, known locally as Buckland Rings. When the Jutes prevailed from the Isle of Wight in the 6th century they founded a settlement called Limentun, and by the time of the Norman conquests this once sparsely populated enclave had grown into a flourishing port.

Today, the characterful, cobbled streets of Lymington are lined with artisan shops, galleries and boutiques, whilst the town’s weekly market is filled with stalls selling everything from garden plants to home-baked cakes. Lymington also plays host to a fleet of elegant restaurants, cosy tea rooms, charming cafés and stylish bistros. Lanes of Lymington, with its sleek balconies and intimate alcoves, has all the pizazz of a top London outlet, while the award-winning Elderflower on Quay Street boasts one of the finest a la carte menus in the region.

Holidays in Lymington can be easily filled with a variety of family-friendly activities, from sunset cruises and stand up paddle boarding to harbourside strolls and coastal rambles. During the sunnier months, the town hosts a number of gala events including the ever-popular Lymington Seafood Festival, a lively July carnival, regattas and regular sailing jamborees. Listen to some summer jazz in the bandstand gardens before a dip in the town’s historic sea water baths, renowned for its rejuvenating mud minerals, and if you’re a wildlife enthusiast, a short walk to the marshes and lagoons of Keyhaven Nature Reserve is a must.

Lymington has its own railway station with mainline links from London Waterloo to nearby Brockenhurst. There are also regular bus services with links to the coastal resort of Bournemouth and the maritime city of Southampton, plus, you’ll also be able to pick up the New Forest tour bus and enjoy an open-top safari. If you’ve had your fill of landlubbing, a quick channel hop on the car and passenger ferry to the Isle of Wight might be just the ticket.

Not a good experience, checked website and it stated that food is served until 8pm on Sunday. Arrived with 6 people at 7pm to be told kitchen closes at 430 on Sundays and the keep forgetting to ask Fullers to update website. Didn’t seem interested in serving us a drink was more interested in chatting to couple with Yappy dog at the bar.. Looks like a nice pub from the outside. Must have just have caught staff on a off night on this occasion.

February 2024

Visited the Fishermen's Rest, which was an easy 5 minute walk from the accommodation. The staff were very helpful and welcoming, the food was delicious (we visited on a Sunday and one of us had the Roast and one the fish of the day) and the atmosphere was good. We wanted to return but run out of days.

A very pleasant pub, with garden. Food good. We experienced mainly very friendly staff but one member of staff seemed more intent on getting us to order earlier than we wished, so we would get off the table in time she explained when asked.

Had some lovely meals here but fish and chips were greasy. Sticky toffee pudding was fabulous as were the other fish main courses we had. Bad idea to use the grill for toast - too hot - burnt.

September 2019

Lovely pub/restaurant with great food. A nice place to go for an evening meal

September 2019

We really enjoyed this pub/restaurant the food was really good, also the beer, consequently we ate here three times. Staff very friendly, helpful and obliging. However it is essential to book a table.

June 2019

We went 3 or 4 times during our stay in Lymington. It's a very welcoming little pub with a small but very nice outside area. Kids are welcome and the food is fantastic. Possibly the best burger I've ever eaten! Would definitely recommend.

July 2017

We enjoyed an early evening meal at thus pub. It was very convenient to our cottage. Everything was lovely. The staff were so friendly and helpful. The food delicious and the wine list pretty reasonable too. The ambience was good. It's a pretty traditional pub in its decor and that is meant to be positive because it helped create a very warm, comfortable and inviting environment. We will definitely return if we come back to Lymington.

Lovely pub, went here most evenings for an after walk pint or coffee. Very friendly staff and Manager. Only criticism is they stop serving food at 6pm on a Sunday. We got there at 645 and would have preferred to eat here rather then the other pub (Ship) up the road.

February 2024

Was quiet when we visited, friendly staff and good pint. Couple of negatives…. Staff coming off duty tended to congregate at bar and were very loud and a lot of fruity language. Could also smell cigarette smoke in bar area.

October 2023

A very good meal and we loved the doughnuts.

August 2023

Very expensive and no choice on a Sunday

September 2018

Great pub right on the marina, fantastic for kids with a big garden out front with a wooden climbing gym and play area. Highly recommend when the weather is nice and especially if you have kids. Food was very nice and they even made breakfast solely for us when we arrived a bit late one morning and they'd already stopped service. Very appreciated!

The White Hart
(Less than a mile)

(10)

An endearing 200-year-old inn which welcomes families and dogs. A great place for a drink or bite to eat. You’ll find a selection of excellent real ales and drinks which can be taken outside to a large, pretty beer garden, equipped with big play area for the youngsters. If it’s a nippy, inside is a huge log fire to keep you warm and toasty. Food at The White Heart is really good, with menus offering some exciting alternatives to the usual pub classics.

The Chequers Inn
(Less than a mile)

(13)

Popular with walkers due to its location to the salt marshes and sea wall, just outside Lymington. This is a pretty 16th Century pub with stove to warm you up in the winter and veritable sun trap in the walled garden in the summer months. Food here is really good. You’ll find familiar pub favourites alongside an exciting specials board, making the most out of local produce. Check out the great selection of real ales and don’t miss live music on summer weekends.

Very busy at Sunday lunch, but food good, apart from undercooked cauliflower. Roast beef was excellent. Service was a bit slow, but not a problem for us.

September 2020

Excellent friendly pub with lovely food & drink. We go at least once every time we visit Lymington.

October 2019

A typical old country pub with lots of atmosphere good food at a reasonable price and the beer was good as well. Dinning room rather small, but there is a large outside eating area with its own courtyard bar.

June 2019

Lovely food and good price

April 2019

friendly staff quick service and good atmosphere.

September 2018

A great pub. We stopped by for a drink during our bike ride. We arrived a little early before opening time! The landlord was very helpful and friendly. Beautiful garden at the rear, not to be missed.

September 2017

A very homely, characterful sort of pub. Very big if you include the two marquees on either side of the pub where they have big screen TVs to watch sport. We went early on a Saturday morning to watch a Lions test and they were so well set up. Coffee mugs and big flasks on the bar, help yourself at £2 a cup, plus bacon rolls at half time. Very impressed! Food is touch and go but on the whole not bad. Definitely worth a visit.

Wonderful 1833 pool - I preferred the 20 degree temperature to the stifling 30 degree in the Leisure Centre. Very friendly staff. The most spacious pool I've swum in anywhere. Swam here most days £4.00 for two hours a bargain.

September 2023

We swam here pretty much every morning of our stay that it was open. Good value for general swimming - the more expensive inflatables course looked like great fun but we didn't try it ourselves. Such a good way to start the day, and a great facility for the town as there's no beach. Would have been even better if it opened earlier or later in the day.

September 2023

We spent an afternoon there and the children enjoyed the inflatables. The weather was good. Changing rooms not clearly signed though.

August 2023

Brilliant place loved it although water was bracing

August 2023

This is a must for everyone, especially for teenagers who love a challenge. We left our two on the assault course for 2 hours whilst we wandered the salt marshes on the Solent Way nearby. The ice cream kiosk next to the baths is value for money too and sells the local ice cream with generous portions.

August 2022

Planning to go there as looked good with all the fun equipment you could hire but found the cost for a family of six (two adults, four children) too expensive so did not go after all.

August 2021

We had a great time on the inflatables one morning. My son loved it! Friendly staff and good to hire wet suits.

August 2021

Did paddle boarding here, a great safe place to give it a try.

August 2021

Great activity, kids loved it! Harder than it looks.

March 2024

A lovely place to stay. So much to see and do locally and within easy reach.

August 2023

Milford on Sea is a very quintessential English village which has retained all its charm. The seafront is a delight to stroll along and The Needles Eye Cafe produces lovely coffee and lunches which is well worth a visit. A walk around Sturt Pond is also enjoyable and through to the village.

June 2023

Lovely quiet location for a beach walk. Great for watching the sea and waves without the crowds.

June 2023

Brilliant beach.

September 2022

Beautiful beach with views to The Isle of Wight. Good for swimming, picnics and walking. Very good car parking and public toilets. Lots of good places to eat and drink either next to the beach or in the village, a short walk away

July 2022

A proper gem. Great location for the new forest. The village is great and was only a short walk from our house. Not too busy or full of holiday makers. We will be back.

October 2021

One of my favourite places

July 2021

Good place to go if you have a buggy or wheelchair as there is a tarmac path along the top of the cliffs with great views of the Needles, plenty of parking and a kiosk serving refreshments.

September 2020

Lovely village with adequate shops on a very pretty green.

September 2019

Due to my husband breaking his leg we hired a mobility scooter for our holiday. It was a joy to ride along the front at Milford. Wonderful views of The Needles and lots of benches along the way too. Great access from the car parks. Would be great if the short path from Milford to Keyhaven could be the same good surface. We felt the rough stones would be too hard to ride on.

June 2019

Love Milford on Sea so old fashioned hasn't changed much since I use go as a child in the 1960/70s

April 2019

great walking area, small cafe-the needles, children climbing play park- crashing waves over stoned beach

March 2019

Great for a dog walk along the spit to Hurst Castle. Needles Eye cafe is a welcome break, quite good food but very busy and a bit basic.

December 2017

Barton on Sea
(6 miles)

(2)

A stony beach with sandy areas as the tide goes out, and a great spot to do some fossil hunting. The cliffs are subject to considerable coastal erosion and at times parts of the beach can be cordoned off. The Beachcomber Café on the cliff top is one of the most popular cafés in the region. Plenty of parking in car parks along the cliff top as well as on-road parking.

Highcliffe Beach
Highcliffe Beach
(7 miles)

Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.

To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.

Nice beach with good facilities

April 2023

Beautiful beach, lots of sand for youngsters- definitely been high on our favourites list, for more than 30 years and still is now the 'children' are nearly 30! - well worth the drive from New Forest. The Noisy Lobster is great and now has an 'outdoor upstairs' too. The Beach Cafe, half-way along, is excellent too- used to do very good carrot cake! The connecting beach towards Steamer Point is dog-friendly all year which is a bonus. Walking to the quay end, you can catch the ferry to Hengistbury Head which is beautiful beach too and often quieter (top favourite!) Even this last week (JULY 2021) the 'kids' wanted to crab-fish from Mudeford Quay!!

July 2022

We had to call the caretaker twice: blocked loo on arrival and patio doors would not lock. Mr Chappey (?) was great. Very friendly and unbothered but having to turn out on the hottest day of the year. He’s a treasure.

June 2022

We had a very enjoyable stay at Champz. When an issue arose at the beginning of the week with the en suite bathroom, the owner very quickly attended and resolved the problem. Would definitely go to the cottage again and book with Toad Hall Cottages

We really enjoyed our week in this cottage. It was very well equipped and in a great location.

August 2021

The cleaning could have been better and the vacuum hose was blocked. We did, however, very much enjoy our stay and visits to Lymington and nearby beeches at Milford on Sea especially the salt marshes and water sports (kite-surfing etc) at Keyhaven.

July 2021

Lovely situation, well equipped, marked down due to bed in master bedroom, but that was the only negative.

July 2021

The property is comfortable and well equipped. And good coastal walks as stated on website but it well over twenty minute walk to the high street, we are good walkers so others might take even longer.

July 2021

Yes enjoyed the stay and would stay again due to the good location

August 2020

We had a lovely stay at Campaz. Any problems were sorted out quickly and promptly. Thank you!

August 2020

Excellent stay, beautiful location and beautiful bungalow. Can't think of anything that could be improved upon.

January 2020

Great house with everything that you need except for towels, if these were provided I do not I could fault the property. It would make such a difference when you are travelling in from overseas.

September 2019

Booking was easy & efficient. The property was comfortable & in a convenient position. We enjoyed our stay.

August 2019

Perfect 80th birthday celebrations. A week’s varied places to visit, only a few minor hiccups with mobility scooter access.

August 2019

comfortable property which worked well for us. The living room was particularly pleasant.

April 2019

We had a super holiday and really enjoy staying at Champaz.

April 2019

There is an all weather concrete table tennis table in the nearby park which our young people enjoyed or rather would have enjoyed had we known to take our own bats etc. It might be worth a mention for future guests. We had an excellent meal in the Chequers Inn just a short walk down the road.

October 2018

Would stay here again

September 2018

We enjoyed our fourth stay at Champaz. The new fitments in the bathrooms (in particular the shower door) were a great improvement. 5 stars out of 5 as always - thank you.

August 2018

We had a very enjoyable month at Champaz and plan to return. Thank you.

July 2018

We enjoyed our stay very much and the property was lovely for two young children as the garden was enclosed and perfect for little ones. The cleanliness could do with a bit more attention in places especially the kitchen, but this didn’t spoil our stay.

June 2018

Excellent location. Easy walking to coast one way and shops the other.

April 2018

We were left a bottle of champagne which was a lovely touch and tea bags etc. The weather was not the best but as we visit the New Forest on a regular basis we found plenty to do. Never seen the rivers so full and the forest so flooded as this year!

January 2018

Yes, we enjoyed out stay and would consider another stay sometime in the future

September 2017

Perfect location ideal for Isle of Wight and theme parks for grandchild. Garden was beautiful and kitchen well stocked with utensils

August 2017

Lovely situation, spacious cottage but in great need of upgrade

July 2017

We did enjoy our stay very much , garden and lounge area were fab. We ate outside as weather was so nice it would have been hard to seat us all around the dinning table, the kitchen was very comfortable. We had a leek in the bunkbed room radiator which we reported to the owner. I feed the leek had been causing damage to the floor and bedding for some time before our vacation sit. Overall the house was clean but a few areas had been missed. Dust on mirrors and some surfaces , windows on patio were dirty at top and old pillow case on one bed and used apron in kitchen . I only mention these things as I know as an owner you would want to bring them up with the cleaner . Overall we had a great stay and would stay again, it's just that we are used to a very high standard when we stay elcewhere eg Cornwall and Yorkshire. Maybe the owners are older and don't realise what is the norm now . Your office staff were very helpful and cheerful and that gets a gold star from me every time .

We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your recent stay at Champaz. We are sorry to hear that you experienced some cleanliness and maintenance issues. We have forwarded your comments onto the owner who wants to thank you for taking the time to feedback on these issues as occasionally things can go unnoticed. The owners have contacted the cleaner to ensure that the issues raised are addressed for future guests. We hope to welcome you back to The New Forest again in the future.

July 2017

We didn't have great weather unfortunately so didn't get to use the garden and BBQ as much as we would've liked, but we still had a fantastic stay. Absolutely zero complaints about the house (I really had to think about those improvements above!). We were two adults, a 2 year old and a baby. My in-laws didn't come as originally planned but even if they had, we still would've had ample space for us all. The house is very well equipped, kitchen has absolutely everything you need, lounge has big couches, dining table, and loads of games for the kids (and adults!). Garden is big, totally enclosed, and BBQ is huge! (I'm South African so this was crucial!) Beds were all very comfortable. Some were old fashioned but still did the job. Bunk bed room is cramped but great for 3 kids. Showers worked well, especially in the main bathroom. There are no towels provided (except tea towels and bath mats) which isn't ideal as we barely had space in the car! But not a deal breaker. Location is good. Walking distance to two fantastic pubs (Chequers and Fishermans). About a 20 minute walk into town, and about 10 minutes to the marina (and another good pub The Mayflower which has a fantastic garden for kids). Might've been nice to be a bit closer to town (walking there and back with kids was a push!) but we'd still stay again. We would definitely recommend this house to others and would stay again if we ever return to Lymington which I'm sure we will! Also worth mentioning we used sitters.co.uk twice during our stay so we could go out without the kids and they were brilliant. Would highly recommend Marion and Annette.

June 2017

We had another wonderful week in Champaz. Our third visit and we still found new things to do. The location of this property is superb.

September 2016

We were very impressed with how well equipped the bungalow was, generally we bring cling film, dishwasher tabs etc with us but there was plenty of everything. The accommodation was clean, fresh and very spacious.

July 2016

Our visit this year was partly to celebrate my Mums 90th birthday. She had enjoyed Champaz and the surrounding area so much she wanted to go again this year. Thank you so much to the NFC staff and cottage owners for all you did to make it such a special occasion and trip. We had a wonderful time and Mum has already stated she wants to go again next year!

July 2015

I really recommend this holiday cottage. We have had a wonderful holiday here. So much to do in this part of the country and its really good to come back after a day's activity to relax in the beautiful and peaceful garden. Would love to come back again.

June 2015

Wonderful garden for our 3 small grandchildren and excellent facilities in the bungalow. We would definitely consider a return visit in a couple of years. A great holiday!

May 2015

Champaz is a delightful property. Very well equipped and set in a superb and quiet location!

We ran our holiday home for 11 years, we have high standards, and Champaz has met all our requirements.

May 2015

Superb accommodation with plenty of space for a large family of 7!

A wonderful week at Champaz. Comfortable and spacious inside and out, the bungalow is fully equipped and all in good working order.
