Lymington to Keyhaven Nature Reserve
(2 miles)

In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Lymington to Keyhaven Nature Reserve is made up of lagoons, reeds beds, salt marshes and mud flats, supporting a number of vulnerable plants and rare species and providing rich feeding ground for a wide variety of birds.  The coastline also has great historic significance having been the biggest producer of sea salt in the country during the 18th century.

A great, easy, level walk with masses of interesting flora and fauna particularly wading birds and insects.

October 2017

Lovely off road cycle route

June 2018

Lots of interesting sea birds and pleasant scenery. Easy walking paths and decent car parks at either end with toilet facilities.

July 2018

This was a delight to visit with spoonbills, oyster catchers and nesting avocets. We had to hire a mobility scooter for our holiday due to a broken leg and most of the reserve was accessible. The map said there were two small areas unsuitable for wheelchairs, perhaps these could be looked at as it would then be possible to do a circular route.

June 2019

An excellent place to visit and see numerous birds including Avocets and Linnets. Parking at Keyhaven is a good place to start.

June 2019

This area was easy to get to, well marked and well used. We spent several hours there over the week and saw over 45 species of birds. It was windy when we were there and unsurprisingly there was little shelter. Well worth a visit if you like birds.

June 2019

Great walk just wish the castle had been open will definitely try another time

January 2020

Lovely walks and plenty of room for everyone

September 2020

We really enjoyed the walk round the nature reserve, it was well worth it.

September 2020

Lovely place to walk

June 2021

This is the iconic walk from Lymington: the circular route, returning via Pennington takes most of the day, but the views and the wildlife are outstanding. Beware, you can no longer get a simple sandwich at The Gun, Keyhaven for lunch and it's only open on certain days. Probably best to take a picnic these days!

July 2021

Park at the marina, walk past the open air sea swimming pool and onward to this lovely little reserve were you can enjoy walks of varying lengths to suit your needs, with views over the Solent towards the Isle of Wight on one side and over the salt marshes on the over.

July 2021

A lovely part of the coastline to walk, easy walking.

July 2021

Great place for a walk or bike ride straight from Lymington

August 2021

Lovely spot and great you can cycle along to Keyhaven and Milford on Sea. Save some energy for the walk to Hurst Castle, that is quite a walk at just over 1.5 miles..

August 2021

Visit early and on a week day to avoid crowds and to get parked in the Keyhaven car park. Parking at Keyhaven end allows you to also visit Hurst Castle,, although on previous occasion we have parked in Lymington and walked the full lenghth of sea wall walk to Keyhaven and the Gunn Inn pub and back to Lymington. The views are extensive and wonderful, the wildlife varies due to season but there is always something to spot either from the sea wall path or down in the protected grassy paths of the reserve. A must for all birdwatchers and those who appreciate nature - you won't be disappointed.

September 2021

April 2023

Beautiful landscape with loads of birdlife. Makes for an excellent walk along the cost to Hurst Castle or Milford on Sea. A wonderfully peaceful and atmospheric place, especially at sunrise or sunset.

September 2023

Beautiful nature reserve. Saw many species of birds including lapwing and turnstones

September 2023

walked around the Keyhaven Marshes a number of times on our visit, enjoying different views and sites each time. Slightly confused by the access across the Marian but once we had found the path we were OK. Despite the recent wet weather the paths were reasonable and fine for sturdy /walking shoes.

October 2023

A brilliant days sailing with Clive, we were able to be very hands on, he was great company and super informative. Loved dropping into The Hut for lunch, altogether one of the best days out ever. (Pre book The Hut though, it's very popular!).
