All you need to know
Exbury, an serene village near the River Beaulieu, is the epitome of a New Forest holiday with gentle jaunts and cycle trails, free roaming wildlife and the world famous Exbury Gardens right on its doorstep.
The 19th Century village of Exbury is proudly peaceful. In fact, the only rowdy behaviour you’ll find on holiday here is the clip-clop of ponies and the odd moo of a cow – bliss!
The name Exbury is synonymous with the world famous Exbury Gardens. The 200 acre gardens are a magnet for nature lovers seeking exquisite floral landscapes, bountiful blooms and inspirational flower confetti displays, all kept well hydrated by a huge water tower that dominates the skyline and can be seen from miles around.
Close by is the UK’s longest privately owned tidal river – the River Beaulieu, where you can hire kayaks to paddle to the pub at the historic shipbuilders’ yard, Bucklers Hard, where Nelson’s Navy was built. Whilst you’re there, don’t miss a visit to the outstanding collection of vintage and supercars at Beaulieu National Motor Museum.
For the best views of the Solent and Isle of Wight, head to Lepe Country Park, just over a mile away from Exbury. With a mile of beach, historic D-Day remains, children’s play area and fantastic walk and cycle trails, there’s plenty to keep the whole family entertained.
The closest shop to Exbury is in Blackfield village, around 2 miles away. Whilst there, make sure to visit the very popular Royal Oak pub for scrumptious food, a good selection of real ales and sunny beer garden.
A magical world of gardens and woodland, Exbury Gardens is a feast of azaleas and camellias, riverside walks, a steam railway, tea rooms, a play area and art exhibitions. It has over 20 miles of pathways, three woods, parkland to explore and a wealth of wildlife such as pheasants, squirrels, dragonflies and butterflies. They welcome families and opening times are seasonal so check the website before you go.

It has been my ambition for some years to visit Exbury Gardens and I finally achieved this last week. What a Birthday treat it was, just magnificent and at each turn the spectacular colours increased! It was made especially enjoyable because I was allowed to take my dogs in to the garden and also Mr Eddy's Tea Rooms. I would certainly recommend this garden to everyone - well worth the entrance fee! The garden also caters well for those less able than myself. A real treat and joy.
May 2017
The gardens are magnificent throughout the year - we visited in August and the herbaceous beds were a blaze of colours. Allow a day to explore the gardens - there is a lovely walk down to the river. Be sure to visit the azalea bowl and ponds - a most tranquil spot.
August 2018
A wonderful place. It seems quite expensive, but when you see the scale of the gardens and the amount of work that must go into maintaining them it is actually pretty reasonable. However, definitely worth going early and spending the whole day to get value for your entry fee.
April 2019
Lovely gardens, well worth visiting. The cafe was woefully under-staffed resulting in a huge queue to order lunch and queuing in the rain was an added frustration. The choices left in the cafe by the time we were served were pitiful - all the sandwiches had been sold. But worth the visit to the gardens.
May 2021
Brilliant visit great for children and train was the highlight for all of us
April 2022
Exbury Gardens is one of my favourite gardens to visit and we timed our visit to the area so that we could visit the gardens before it closed for winter (this is normally end of October). We enjoyed a sunny, if chilly, walk around the gardens and the river walk plus a warming coffee at the middle cafe. If I lived closer I would have an annual pass and visit multiple times. Love watching the train go through the grounds.
October 2023
Fabulous. We spent a whole day here
April 2024
Beautiful rhodendrums and azaleas with breathtaking beauty, well worth a visit in April
April 2024
Exbury Gardens 200 acres of earthly paradise, offer a riot of colour in spring, an oasis of tranquillity in summer followed by a splendid show as the leaves change in the autumn. The famous Steam Railway runs every day the Gardens are open, with trains departing Exbury Central Station at regular intervals for 20 minute rides.

Well worth a visit. The colours this time of year are spectacular
May 2019
Lovely day out for all family, including dogs. Beautiful landscaped gardens, so peaceful and relaxing with hugh variety of plants and trees . Train ride a must, brings out the child in all of us.
October 2019
Visited but only saw a small section. Needs a good day to see properly. What we saw was very good
October 2021
Well worth a little trip around part of Exbury Gardens particularly at this time of year - April

The Maritime Museum and Buckler’s Hard Story gives an insight into the history of this pretty 18th century shipbuilding village famous for the vessels it built for Nelson's Navy. Explore the village which has remained unchanged for hundreds of years or walk beside the riverbank for an opportunity to see some of the abundant wildlife that inhabits its banks. Buckler's Hard has been voted by Visit England as one of the '101 Things To Do Before You Go Abroad'.

We spent an afternoon here and learnt much in the museum. We made time for the river trip which was both informative and delightful.
June 2018
Pretty place. Easy to walk to from Beaulieu
July 2018
If you're intending to just have a walk around the village, be warned that there is a very expensive car park (you have to pass through the museum to gain entry to the village) unless you walk in via public footpaths. Very disappointed that our plan to spend an hour or so pottering was thwarted by expensive admission fees.
August 2018
A delightful place with good facilities and an excellent museum. An easy 2 mile walk to (or from) Beaulieu.
June 2019
Lovely walk along the river
August 2020
Not for children! There really is very little to do with the family. There is a boat ride, but that aside it is just a pretty place to visit. As a family attraction my review is only 3 stars.
August 2020
Nice place to visit, especially if the weather is good. We were cycling, and unfortunately, you can't explore whilst cycling, you have to dismount - so just something to be aware of. Outdoor cafe, staff were not as friendly as some places we visited.
June 2021
Very interesting place
October 2021
The walk from Bucklers Hard to Beaulieu was a lovely peaceful walk through beautiful scenery alongside the Beaulieu River.
February 2022
A great place to visit with an excellent and extensive museum
May 2022
Museum interesting, beautiful location; fine vantage point to see Beaulieu river
May 2022
A fascinating place to visit, full of history. The museum is a must and we enjoyed the half hour boat trip up the river
September 2023
Very peaceful and tranquil, would be great for a picnic and the river cruise was educational
April 2024
A 25ft motorboat moored at Bucklers Hard in Beaulieu, Lazy Daze is available for river trips and fishing adventures whether you’re looking for a two hour jaunt or a 12 hour marathon. There’s free parking, pontoon access, a café and a pub on site and Lazy Daze is owned and skippered by Jeff Semple, who has extensive experience fishing and boating on the Solent.

With two places to eat and fabulous river views, this is a great spot for a leisurely lunch or some serious fine dining. The Yachtsman’s Bar offers light bites and a good range of local beer, or for a more sumptuous affair choose the 2 AA Rosette Riverview Restaurant and enjoy a menu full of beautifully crafted dishes using the finest local produce.
The Master Builders (T: 01590 616253) Bucklers Hard SO42 7XB
Stopped for a drink here after a lovely walk from Beaulieu. Sit outside as the views across the river are stunning.
June 2017
Had an excellent Sunday lunch here, superb service and food. The Yachtsman bar part of the hotel was great for a casual drink and bar meal.
March 2018
Great place, good food, friendly and happy to allow dogs
April 2019
Absolutely lovely location, we only visited for a drink but the staff were not very helpful with ordering and paying for our drinks. Lovely views across the estuary.
May 2021
Very interesting historically however the museum charges ÂŁ6 approx per person for entry. The cafe was efficient. Plenty of places to sit and eat and enjoy the view. There are some boards located around the area giving historical information and a few properties open for viewing. The walk to Beaulieu was disappointing as the bird hide and boardwalk were closed but this wasn't mentioned anywhere until you got there. The lady collecting the car park money was a gem and very understanding when family turned up unexpectedly and we had so few minutes left on the ticket - very impressed with her kind understanding.
September 2021
We had a lovely day at Buckler's Hard. We all enjoyed the boat trip and the food in the cafe was delicious. We look forward to returning when we are next on holiday in the New forest.
May 2023
After a river cruise we had a lovely cocktail in the bar
April 2024
Tuck into a cream tea or a delicious light lunch at this lovely tearoom. Down at Bucklers Hard there’s lots going on, so this tearoom is the perfect pit stop when exploring this fascinating, historic village.
Captain’s Cabin Tea Rooms (T:01590 616203) 75 Bucklers Hard, Bucklers Hard, Beaulieu SO42 7XB
Had a cream tea here which did not come up to the standard of a Sussex Cream Tea. The scones were not warmed up before serving and it was self service, so this was a let down.
June 2017
Had a lovely cream tea here, you get a choice of hot drinks to go with it, not stuck to just tea, you get 2 scones ( unlike other tea rooms who only give one scone) and if you ask they will warm the scones, not self service as stated by another reviewer, I would recommend this location as very good well worth a visit.
February 2018
The Captains table was a great place to visit for either breakfast or lunch or just an early morning coffee. Also only five minutes walk from Clobb Copse Cottage.
July 2022
Lepe Country Park Café – Right along Lepe beach is this inviting café and kiosk open all year round. The café offers a range of hot and cold snacks and drinks including delicious handmade cakes.
Lepe Country Park Café (T: 023 8089 2991) Southampton SO45 1AD
Perfect pit stop after a walk along the beach. Serve tasty sandwiches. Sit outside to make the most of the views.
June 2017
Lovely views and food was good.
September 2021
Located on the outskirts of Beaulieu, this cosy pub is a welcoming stop off for walkers, cyclists, families and horse riders. With plenty of comfortable seating, roaring fires, sunny garden and lots of choice on the menu, this is a great spot for an enjoyable holiday meal or a few well-earned drinks at the bar. Children, dogs and muddy boots welcome.
The Royal Oak (T: 01590 612228) Hilltop, Beaulieu SO42 7YR
Excellent food and atmosphere - drinks very expensive though and 10% service charge added
April 2018
We stopped here on the way to our holiday cottage.. 3 adults and one toddler. It was a sunny day so we sat outside; the garden was beautiful and well cared for. The food was delicious. Added bonus of a couple of donkeys walking by the front of the pub. With all the room in the garden, a small children’s play area would be a welcome addition.
September 2019
Fed here twice and were impressed with the friendliness of the staff and the quality and size of the meals. Prices were not excessive either. Would certainly go there again.
July 2021
Excellent menu and good food service a bit slow
April 2022
loved the royal oak , great food and location , lovely staff , excellent!
August 2022
Very nice cosy pub with good food and service
November 2023
Some of the best views of the Solent can be enjoyed from over a mile of beach and pine fringed cliffs. Historic D-Day remains, wildflower meadows and children's play area. Beach front car park.
A beautiful shingle beach with pretty painted beach huts, plenty of parking, and excellent coastal walks along Hurst spit to Hurst Castle with clear views of the Isle of Wight and needles. The superb Raft Rocks Restaurant is worth a visit with its Art deco style and roof terrace. You can also walk across the wildlife marshes to Keyhaven harbour and (in season) take the boat to Hurst Castle or the Isle of Wight.
Lovely village, plenty of shops and places to eat - no post office though.
June 2017
Fantastic sea location with goods pubs, shops etc
November 2017
Great for a dog walk along the spit to Hurst Castle. Needles Eye cafe is a welcome break, quite good food but very busy and a bit basic.
December 2017
great walking area, small cafe-the needles, children climbing play park- crashing waves over stoned beach
March 2019
Love Milford on Sea so old fashioned hasn't changed much since I use go as a child in the 1960/70s
April 2019
Due to my husband breaking his leg we hired a mobility scooter for our holiday. It was a joy to ride along the front at Milford. Wonderful views of The Needles and lots of benches along the way too. Great access from the car parks. Would be great if the short path from Milford to Keyhaven could be the same good surface. We felt the rough stones would be too hard to ride on.
June 2019
Lovely village with adequate shops on a very pretty green.
September 2019
Good place to go if you have a buggy or wheelchair as there is a tarmac path along the top of the cliffs with great views of the Needles, plenty of parking and a kiosk serving refreshments.
September 2020
One of my favourite places
July 2021
A proper gem. Great location for the new forest. The village is great and was only a short walk from our house. Not too busy or full of holiday makers. We will be back.
October 2021
Beautiful beach with views to The Isle of Wight. Good for swimming, picnics and walking. Very good car parking and public toilets. Lots of good places to eat and drink either next to the beach or in the village, a short walk away
July 2022
Brilliant beach.
September 2022
Lovely quiet location for a beach walk. Great for watching the sea and waves without the crowds.
June 2023
Milford on Sea is a very quintessential English village which has retained all its charm. The seafront is a delight to stroll along and The Needles Eye Cafe produces lovely coffee and lunches which is well worth a visit. A walk around Sturt Pond is also enjoyable and through to the village.
June 2023
A lovely place to stay. So much to see and do locally and within easy reach.
August 2023
Lovely sea walk within 15 minutes of the cottage.
March 2024
A stony beach with sandy areas as the tide goes out, and a great spot to do some fossil hunting. The cliffs are subject to considerable coastal erosion and at times parts of the beach can be cordoned off. The Beachcomber Café on the cliff top is one of the most popular cafés in the region. Plenty of parking in car parks along the cliff top as well as on-road parking.
Super walk, nice and easy and great place for a meal or tea and cake by the car park.
April 2019
A pleasant walk along the cliff top and along the beach. There was less cliff than last time we went to the New Forest.
June 2023
Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.
To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.
A picturesque, tree-lined beach of shingle, and sand at low tide. Good facilities on the cliff top including an excellent tea room, public toilets, baby change and a children’s play area in the Castle gardens. Plenty of parking and sloping access down to the beach. Highcliffe Castle beach is dog-friendly all year round.
Lovely clean sandy beach and a really i would highly recommend this spot for your car to break down takes the ouch out of waiting for the recovery truck
April 2017
Lovely
April 2019
Very picturesque beach with great access, looks good for a beach day
October 2021
